I would like to remind people of the existence of Blood Bowl, where there are two main types of teams, running teams who play American football like normal and bashing teams, who specialize in injuring or killing the entire enemy team before getting touchdowns. I always liked the Flatout racing series, not for the racing mind you. But for the mini games where you launch your driver out of the windscreen in events such as: high jump, darts, bowling and football. Many hours spent with a group of mates and several beers

This brings back memories of playing the Summer Olympics Game on my brother's Atari computer. It featured a cliff jumping event where a pelican shook his head in silent judgment whenever your character's head got stuck in the seafloor after a bad jump (which was every time - I never did figure out the controlls)

Not sure if this counts as it's a game mode rather than a full game, but Bomb Ball from Team Buddies is like this. Four teams of players, a ball that is actually a bomb that starts its 5-second countdown when someone picks it up, and you all have guns. And you can find bigger guns in most maps. You get bonus points if the bomb explodes while in an opponent's goal.

Another 2 more recent weird sports games I remember are Outlaw Golf PS2 and Red Card GameCube , where the object of the games are not just to put the ball in the hole or score as many goals as possible but also to cause as much damage to your opponent as possible .

Plot starts out as a snowboarding trip with friends, ends with you snowboarding down power line pipes so you can storm the zeppelin of an evil villain who runs an evil corporation with the plan to take the world back to the arcade era of games, because he was raised by evil arcade machines. Oh, and you can't fall off the pipes or the snow sharks will get you.

I remember a baseball game for the original nes that I loved. It played mostly like regular baseball except the players were robots. Unlike regular baseball, if you'd try to steal a base or have some sort of dispute it'd turn into a 2d fighting game where you would kill the opponent.

For a potential second installment I would recommend Sega Soccer Slam. It follows the general rules of football/soccer in that you have to kick the ball through the opposing team's goal. However in order to achieve this you have to utilise cartoonish violence and super powers, based on the team' theme

There was a game years ago which I wish would be remastered, it was called "Red Card" I think.. It was a football game but you could do jumping kicks to your opponent to knock them over etc. I'm pretty sure you could unlock more teams as well which included dolphins lol (Then you would have a dolphin drop kicking a human, before dribbling the ball down the pitch to score! Good times.

Base Wars for the original NES. A fairly standard robot baseball game, until you go to tag someone out. Then it turns into a fighting game between the runner and the defender. It is a viable strategy to build a team specifically around KOing enough of the other team's player that they have to give up.

QWOP actually has two hurdles, one low hurdle at 50m and one that is twice as high on 75m. Also it ends on a long jump at 100m. How do I know this? Because I sat for two hours installing another game on my PC and had time to kill.

I'm a bit disappointed Nintendo World Cup doesn't get the mention; a spin-off of sorts from Kunio-kun series that was basically a football anime made into a game, where the shots fires were anything but regular such as the ball curved so powerfully that it suddenly becomes three, spinning spheres ^^' I remember playing that as a kid. Maybe not as wacky as those on the list, but it still preceeded even Mutant Football League by like 3 years or so :)

List idea: games with the best "galleries." I like the classic cars in LA Noire, the character models in the Batman: Arkham games, and the museum in the Bioshock Infinite DLC Clash in the Clouds. Dishonored had a gallery I know, but it wasn't as cool--just concept art I think. I'm sure there are others. Especially when you unlock them, it feels like a little more tangible of a reward than just achievements.

I am shocked you did not include Mario Strikers Charged. There are some awesome Mario sports games, but my personal favourite of them all is Mario Strikers Charged. It’s as badass and hardcore as Mario characters have ever been.

No love for 100ft robot golf? The game that asked "what if Pacific Rim but also Tiger Woods" with such classic characters as 5 Corgis controlling a Voltron and a giant skeleton called Jeff. Bonus points for the McElroy providing the utterly hilarious commentary
