To explain a bit: the term used in the video for 'cheating' is '浮気' in Japanese. 浮気 means 'in love with another one', that's why some of them think prostitution is not 浮気 as it does not include emotional feeling to the prostitute. There is another term in Japanese that has similar meaning, which is '不倫'. 不倫 means 'having sex with another one', but Takashii did not use this word because 不倫 is a term that is only used on people who are married (which most of the interviewees are obviously unmarried). Therefore, there is no such exact word that can perfectly match the term 'cheating' in Japanese as in English.

It's interesting to see how, in Japan, men and women seem to separate emotion and sex when it comes to relationships. In most other countries, the physical aspect of a relationship is what takes it from casual to serious, at least in theory. I would have liked it if Takashii had asked them if, once married to someone, their opinion of visiting a brothel changes, or if they still think it's ok, as long as their spouse lets them know.
@honkhonk6359 Жыл бұрын
I think it’s been like this for most of history in fact. Romance and romantic love are Western cultural constructs drawing on traditions of chivalric romance in the Middle Ages which were then heavily propagated amongst the emerging middle classes during industrialization. People only started getting into relationships solely out of love during the Victorian era it seems, when productivity afforded greater levels of wealth and leisure to do so. Beforehand the primary motive was survival and the bearing of many children to compensate for a high mortality rate. Other cultures have industrialized but in this regard the West is still ahead of the curve. Arranged marriages are still commonplace in India for instance, and it is customary for wealthy Chinese men to take mistresses.
@jmbickham Жыл бұрын
I’d like Takeshii to have asked about brothels after marriage and in a few more detailed scenarios that I’ve heard of. One is during pregnancy… as it seems pretty culturally common in Japan for couples to not have sex during pregnancy… how do women feel about their husbands going to brothels then? What do women think about brothels in the scenario where they are no longer interested in sex at all (after children, after menopause or even just low sex drive from when young), but their partner is still interested in regularly having sex?

The thing i think people are not understanding from this video is that culturally it seems that Japanese have a clear divide between love and sex. Which there is a distinction between love and lust. The difference between them and the west is that they accept this divide where the west doesn't. Them having brothels that mainly cater to lust probably has saved many more relationships than it has ruined. For example men will have higher sex drives younger where their partner might not want to do it 24/7, and the same goes for older women when their sex drive increases.
@letgo4331 Жыл бұрын

The problem with your view is that you are seeing these things in "black"(is ok to cheat) or "white"(is not ok to cheat). I'm pretty sure those young japanese women dont like either, even if they say that are ok with it, meaning to tolerate it. Unfortunately for them they cannot force the men to not cheat, so they make this compromise in the idea that, as they said, there are no feelings involved. Translating Fuzoku(風俗) as prostitution is kinda wild. You gotta explain what kind of Fuzoku they are referring to. Like this girl at 3:00 is depicting the non-sexual situation, like eating & drinking with women at a nightclub/bar sort of situation. According to your definition, Hooters and strip clubs would also be prostitution. Also I think you should interview women in other places under the sun too. I'm a Japanese women myself and these women who are roaming around in this part of Tokyo at night are a different kind of breed imo. It would be biased to, for instance, catch a bunch of young people roaming around Las Vegas, interview them, and conclude that Americans are unchaste and slovenly, wouldn't it😅 なんか、コメント欄に似非ニッポンエキスパートが湧いてますわ…。

Welcome to Westernization, aka killing the Japanese language and culture on purpose. Fuuzoku only means customs, like in a certain area of the country and so. But thanks to the foreign owners of Japan (Japan was sold to foreigners by "Meiji"), the language has been "reformed" (dumbed down and perverted) three times in huge ways... And one of the goals was to make good meaning words bad (八方美人), bad words good (凄い), attach meanings to words that have never been there (付き合う・彼氏彼女)etc. That is step 1 of destroying a nation - destroying their language.

Follow your own choices even if you come to regret later but don't hurt someone's feeling and more importantly don't make them waste their time and lose opportunities that might not present themselves again when you're having fun in the backstages.

We get our morals and values from Christianity, as this country, as well as most Western countries and nations, were founded on Christian principles. We're not a "Christian nation" per se (obvious to anyone living here), but our ethics, morals, and code of conduct for the majority of the country descends from the Christians who settled the territories, states, towns, and so forth. That's why cheating with a prostitute here is one of the worst ways to cheat versus in Japan, where their morals and ethics descend from a completely different background.

As a Japanese man, it is very bizarre to me lol... My wife would cut my jewels off if I went to a brothel, whether emotional attachments were involved or not. That being said, when I was in Tokyo in the early 2000s, I used to work as a host to help pay for college, and I remember more and more frequent were married women showing up for a "fun time" ... after being dropped off by their husband who went his own separate way to a next-door brothel. I was very confused by it, but I never said anything. After all, they were clearly opened with the arrangements. I also remember a few years ago, I was staying at a friend's home in Tokyo for a night. I accidentally overheard he and his wife talking. She handed him allowance money and said, "I'm tired. Go find a prostitute. I'm going to bed." as if it were a completely normal thing. Wow... Overall, however, I still really don't think this is the norm. I've talked with quite a bit of people on this subject when I went to go visit my hometown in Ehime. They are people who I know closely, who are willing to give me honest answers. Whether man or woman, every single person I spoke with do not agree with the statements made in this video and in fact really hate how people in Tokyo and Kyoto view things this way. Thus, it is likely that majority of Japanese people in smaller cities or rural regions do not share the sentiments in this video.

I think there is a lot of nuance and deeper issues here than what we are able to see in these videos. It sounds like emotional cheating is harder to accept than sexual (which in some ways makes sense, but also depends on how you view sex). It would be interesting to hear about married couples (especially with motherhood). Also would be interesting to hear from gays/lesbians. It's cheating if he hides it, it's okay if he pays someone...sounds to me like they're saying it's okay as long as he comes back to me. We also need to be careful about making general assumptions. While there may be a "cheating culture" in Japan, it doesn't mean all Japanese do it, nor is cheating unique to Japan.

The girls seem pretty open to the idea of their boyfriends having a physical relationship with other women as long as it doesn't involve an emotional relationship, as well. And they admit that they don't like this, but that they don't want to be seen as clingy. No mention about the risks of Mr. Boyfriend bringing home an STD, developing an emotional relationship with a girl he's cheating with, or of him getting the other girl pregnant. Also, the focus is solely on the actions of the guy -- while the girls are seemingly O.K. with the guys cutting loose, does that men that guys can expect their girls to also be as casual with their extra-curricular activities, too?

Things like STDs and pregnancy wouldn't really be a thing at a brothel because the girls there would have to be tested constantly and you'd have to use a condom. Their job is to have sex and if it is a legal establishment there would be rules and procedures for these kinds of things. That's part of why I think they'd be okay with their men going to brothels. It is probably seen as safer overall than going to some random woman. Other things you have to worry about less is getting into fights with the brothel girl since their boyfriend should be seen as just a client and the boyfriend would always have access as long as he has money. If he becomes upset that particular girl isn't there, then it becomes more emotional cheating which all of them pretty consistently say they are not for.
@AT-rr2xw Жыл бұрын
I was curious about that as well. He asked about women cheating, but not about women going to brothels. Sure, we can assume that that is less common, but that is an assumption as opposed to an answer.

I'd be curious to know if/how much other cultural norms affect each other. In the case of the first girl, it sounds like another cultural norm there is influencing her decision making; the "honne/tatemae" concept. She could have just told the guy she's not into him, sparing them both. Instead, choosing to live the lie and let bad feelings and behaviours fester. Choosing not to tell the truth has only made him lonely and likely hurt, and her, a cheater. It's such a toxic mentality. I feel like all these issues, (the cheating being ok if "you don't love them", affection not being publicly acceptable, work culture and honne/tatemae) all contribute to and exacerbate each other. Clearly people are craving physical affection, but it almost seems like you're not supposed to get it from someone you're close with, because then you would have to go through the awkward talk of telling your partner your true feelings and risk upsetting them, and you don't want to rock the boat (collectivism mentality+honne/tatemae). This definitely doesn't help the declining birthrates.

I believe it is important to establish boundaries about sex. I’m not in favor of being in a sexual relationship with someone that is having sex with other people. This is a health issue for me because there are STD’s that can destroy a life. I believe if this is communicated up front before engaging in a sexual relationship then everyone understands and has a choice. If someone then goes outside that agreement then it is cheating.

Innocent young idealism if only it were so! Some say forbidden fruit may be but I say this is the sweetest. Rules like these often have the opposite effect, as you see these things go without saying, a relationship is by default 'closed' infact it is the point of announcing you're in one and conversations such as these communicate nothing but your fears and insecurities or perhaps lack of social skill/emotional intelligence, rendering the conversation completely pointless. You must recognize if your partner is unsatisfied with you and for what reason, then make your decision to try to change something or move on(usually best to move on, a relationship based on sex is what brothels are for.

@@Heopful Open relationships exist (polygamy), and I think are fine if all parties involved are genuinely happy with this, but it is something you have to bring up early on, not just dump it on them later. I am not for this and I am very much of the opinion that I want a monogamous relationship and do have one. Most interviews I've seen revolves around men going to brothels and women being okay with it but there's also such a thing for women (host clubs, etc.). In my personal experience with having lived in Japan for years (Both in the city and countryside) Affairs are not only common, but expected and accepted. Men will have affairs with women at work and do "overtime" a lot, while housewives will have affairs while the husband is at work. It's an open secret. Most people don't care about their partner cheating as long as it isn't found out in public so they don't lose face. Most husbands and wives I know have a "Don't ask; Don't tell" mindset. I never met a couple that I knew well personally that didn't engage in cheating/affairs. And it's just as common in the countryside as in the cities.

Prostitution seems part of Japanese culture, I knew it was popular, but I didn't know it was this popular. All over the world there is a lot of cheating in relationships, nowadays the polygamy is becoming popular. I am against prostitution but I can see the distinction between love and physical attraction that some of these Japanese girls are doing. However, I felt that most of them are ok with men going to brothel because "it has always been like that" or because "men will cheat anyway so it is ok" not because they have a mutual consensus with their partner. I had the idea of Japanese culture as a very traditional one, although it seems to be changing with new generations that are asking themselves about sex-affective relationships in new ways. I love the kind of videos that make you think hard about it. Thank you

Some context that might be worth considering in this topic : > The Japanese word for “cheating” in the romantic sense is _not the same_ as English. “Uwaki”(浮気) literally means “fleeting feeling”, mainly about being fickle. It’s almost a neutral word with no inherent nuance of “deceiving or betrayal” like the English word “cheating”, which is inherently malicious. That might be why they don’t take it as seriously and joke about it being “fun” and encourage to others, more like “experimenting around”. Technically, it is possible to be “Uwaki” with the partner’s knowledge, making it closer to open relationship. There are different words for “cheating” with heavier guilt/shame, but almost never used romantically. “Furin(不倫)”, specifically meaning “adultery” is not used casually and is even considered a crime. > Prostitution in Japan, “Fuuzoku”(風俗), technically can’t include intercourse/penetration as it’s prohibited by law. So it’s more things like hj/bj. So depending on people’s definition, some may not consider it “having sexual relation” but just “receiving a service”, and lessens many issues regarding prostitution like loss of virginity, pregnancy and STD’s Not making any moral judgements, but since people are wondering why Japan’s view on this is so different, such contexts on linguistics and culture may have a role on it.

@@hikikhun6668 Prostitutes don’t just happily accept penetration willy-nilly, it is a very strenuous act that potentially damages the body. Fuuzoku ultimately is a business and they can’t just let customers demand things that is beyond the agreement, especially if it may harm the worker. If you hire a private masseuse and demand her to do sexual services, what do you think gonna happen? Japan doesn’t fuck around with law, that’s why their porn continue being fully censored even though it has absolutely no purpose these days.

Man it just goes to show how different someone's values can be when they treat sex as a casual activity, and I guess this is a sentiment shared by a good part of the interviewees Takashi found here. Personally I can't imagine sharing something so intimate with someone I don't have any strong feelings for. Would be interesting to see this survey repeated elsewhere!

@@snazzydrewhmm, I'm Asian though, like born and brought up fully in an Asian country. I think it's more of how it's only Japan who has this very "unique" view on cheating because even though cheating happens in every country, the difference is that people do shame the men and women who cheat and see them as pathetic because we know it's morally wrong since being in a relationship generally means you are committed to a partner (unless you're into open or poly relationships). I think the fact that the Japanese interviewees mentioned "cheating is wrong only if I am found out" shows that they do acknowledge it's not right or acceptable.

I mean I don't completely disagree. But I will say morals are relative. @@HFlame7 It isn't, do you think Japan's population decline is only happening in one prefecture? It is a cultural problem, one that they created and this is a contributing factor. The attitude is similar in the US but not the same because the US has never prioritized things like arranged marriages or marriage to the family instead of the individual. Japan is also homogenous, whereas the US is multicultural so even if you are affected by those issues, in most cases you can marry outside of your community. I still can't imagine how having sex with another is not considered cheating. In my opinion, I think this is one of the reasons why their romantic relationships aren't as deep compared to others. One said allowing their men to go to brothels decreases emotional cheating but this isn't true. Making love is the deepest way of showing affection to your significant other and both should be ale to connect on that level. Personally, I wouldn't want my man to go out and pay for sex. I do have a Japanese boyfriend and I asked him about this and he said that the probable reason why relationships are like this in Japan is because they can't communicate what they really want.
