It wasn’t free. There was no out of pocket expenses because it was covered by the nhs. You had none of the extra options like private room - £450 Nhs is terrible and offers the bare minimum service. Im currently pregnant and would have to wait three weeks for a blood test requested by my midwife.

@@DolceVitaChannel thank you! In the US, there are 3 separate bills- one from mama’s labor/hospital impatient, one from anesthesia (if applicable), and one from the hospital pediatrician for baby’s care. The quotes are different if you don’t have insurance. For my labor and delivery alone (which is typically the largest bill out of all), they billed my insurance a total of around $24,000. But if you don’t have insurance, they can typically work out an out-of-pocket amount for each service. I don’t know how much it would be and I think it varies from hospital to hospital, but I know it gets reduced significantly. Still would be couple grand though.

I’m in Canada. In some ways, like childbirth, we are blessed to have free healthcare. I’ve experienced a fair amount of the negative side of free healthcare, such as waiting 2 years+ for surgery and medications that cost 20x what they are in other countries and a shortage of doctors, being brushed aside as a non-emergency when I had serious medical 🏥 needs etc…. I’ve also experienced emergency surgeries, a healthcare system that is well connected which prevents mistakes and abuse (doctor shopping for example). Fantastic care when I needed it. I’ve had 3 babies myself and have 5 grandchildren all for free and the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Our Public Health Nurses visit new mothers in their home and we have free lactation consultants available to breastfeeding moms. My youngest granddaughter (3 months) has had several resolvable treatable issues in her short life so far, like torticollis and lip and tongue tied which made nursing really hard on her. She’s been to about 20 appointments between specialists and doctors - all free. And she’s getting much better so it’s been really helpful. Many of us complain about the problems with it, but there are many more things to be grateful for with our system.

In Poland if you give birth in a regular public hospital you don't pay, because it is already "payed' for from your insurance. You pay it while you work, they take some percentage of your money from your paycheck each month (it is legally required) or you pay your insurance elsewhere. That's why you don't have to pay more when you give birth in a hospital. But private health care exist and you can choose that and pay, or if you don't have any insurance. For example, home births with a midwife costs a few thousands in PLN

Denmark here. WE PAY NOTHING! It costs nothing for the surgery, nor the personal midwife, and the room is also free, for as long as we need it. First time moms, usually stay in the hotel for about 5-7 days, whilst mothers who have birthed before, and have an uncomplicated birth, usually chose to go home after a few hours. Some chose to stay a day or two. With a C-section, it's usually expected, that you stay for at least 5 days. With complications, this may stretch over a longer period, and maybe the baby needs to be in the NICU. If the baby needs to stay in the NICU for weeks or months, one parent gets a free room at the hotel, and if the other one wants to stay there too, they can pay for it, which is around 60€ or $65 pr night, which is including 3 meals a day. This is all free, and we never ever see a bill from any hospital. We actually have no idea how much an operation costs. We also have a midwife that follows the pregnancy all the way, 4 doctor visits, and minimum 2 scans of the baby. The first is usually done around 8-12 weeks, and then there's a neckfold scan in week 19. All for free of course. As aftercare, we have a children's nurse, that comes to our homes every other week, or more if needed, where she weighs and measures the babys growth, and helps us moms, with anything from breastfeeding to soar nipples. After the first 3 months, she comes 1 a month, up til 12 months. This is an offer though, and not mandatory. I'm so grateful that we don't have to pay. I would've been in sooo much debt, due to serveral autoimmune diseases and 3 c sections with complications.

Costs can vary wildly. For natural birth you will end up spending anywhere from about USD 600 to USD 1000 for a normal delivery all inclusive in a no frills simple nursing home for new births. But if one opts for a designer birthing experience in a fancy hospital with a private room, it can be up to 5-6 that price (all for normal birth without forceps / suction). For a C-section, multiply by 2-3 depending on the city. These are prices in the top 6-8 cities in India. Medical insurance covers a piddly proportion of this - practically useless. In fact maternity costs are excluded from coverage in many insurance policies or severely limited in coverage.

In Austria the general care is free, since it's included in your health insurance, which is quite expensive though, and if you want a midwife of your choice, it might be several hundreds of euros. For a birth of our second child we paid 1200 euros, outside of a hospital, in a midwife house, me, my husband and two very experienced midwifes. After one night we went home with our baby girl. It's a pity I didn't realise sooner that it's not necessary to spend more than one night outside of my own bed :). Our first child came to this world in a hospital, I spent there four whole days without having any reason, it's just a habit here. We didn't pay anything, however, no free choice of a midwife. In general, it's very safe and on all stages quite comfortable to deliver a baby in Austria.

Ciao. In general if it’s an emergency you get treated for free in any public hospital and they’re the vast majority. In your case I think having an Italian citizenship should also give you the right to access public hospitals for free even if it’s not an emergency. 😉

In Germany you only have 10€ per night for the mother. I don't know about the father, but most clinics have a family room with a second bed

USA - after insurance my days old son had a $600 bill sent to him and we had a $3000 bill after insurance. Something like Tylenol was $500 for every dose.

In US without insurance 30,000$ but you could probably get it dropped to maybe 12,000$ a midwife for home birth or birth center is about $8,000 but this doesn't include any ultrasounds or blood work so it's more like $10,000. If u qualify for Medicaid then it's free If you have insurance it's all based on your deductible & out of pocket max but I'd say average is $2,000 to $7,000. Not t9 mention your monthly premium payments
