I went with a Uni Stage II TCU shortly after going Stage II plus on the ECU on my MK5 GTI. Not sure if they have higher ratings on the new seven speeds, but the DQ250 DSG in mine starting getting hinky in shifts when approaching the factory torque limit (roughly 290 lb/ft on those), the TCU tune not only cleaned/firmed up the shifts, but allowing the full potential of the ECU tune was well worth the money as well. Definitely pulled even harder after both tunes. For a car that’s otherwise stock turbo with the usual handful of bolt-ons, these are the best two upgrades I’ve made for the money.

I owned a mk4 r32 for 14 years and sold it last year. Miss the growl and the look. Tuned it conservatively with a flash and air intake. Everyone loved the car but it was either turn the car in to a project car or get something that would easily switch from work vehicle to a weekend track car. Last year i got the Golf R and its been a heck of a lot of fun. A little more growl and boost in torque and hp is defenitely needed. Keep up the good work. For example in Europe König works together with VW to provide a tune that does not impact engine warranty (Called ABT Power by König), which is roughly equivalent to stage 1, but they do not provide any dsg tuning. @qresNoah2 жыл бұрын
When your car comes from the factory it’s tuned to pass emissions test, then get the best mpg, then power. What you’re doing is putting power as #1 focus. Stage 1, means you’re not pushing the car to its extreme limit. Track cars are built with the fastest quickest time in mind, so those are always pushed to their limits. That’s why they’re always so hot and have to wait in-between races to cool down. With a stage 1 tune, your car will be perfectly fine. If you notice hotter temps, feel free to get a cold intake or if your car is a turbo, an inter cooler. Or get an airtec vent.

@@jbac5767 Wolfsburg? Love it! Mine is a '16 MK7 GTI Sport, originally "210" HP (underrated of course). Went APR stage 1 ECU and TCU tune on the 6-speed DSG. That tune has undergone a lot of revision in the past 1-2 years and it's better for it in my experience. 290 HP and 320 ft/lb is the latest crank figure on **87** grade fuel! I stick to that due to 91 ACN regional gas which causes the ECU to pull timing shown in logs. However, ran the 323 HP crank, 91 tune ran just fine with new intercooler, charge pipes, inlet pipe, turbo muffler delete, and high-flow drop filter. A lot of stuff for stage 1, right?! Your fuel might be better, by a lot. APR now has a fuel info page stating E85 might be an option IF your logs show fuel trims in range. Our thoughts exactly! I guess the less performance-minded of VW may not feel the same way. We are all for better throttle response, a quicker car, and just making it a lot more fun.

You should definitely do a downpipe if you haven’t yet. That’s where the serious gains are in junction with a tune.
@louiestuart5 жыл бұрын
Keith Doran Won’t do much with only stage 1. You’ll even lose numbers with a DP on. That’s why the tuning company has a list of requirements and recommendations per tune. As for stage 1 with IE, I believe the only supporting mod required is a CAI. DP and IC is required for stage 2.

I went with the JB4 at first with the APR dsg tune. Jb4 just never ran right. Jumped over to Cobb, and the OTS 93oct v100 was great, but started to max out the Hpfp and would get thrown into limp at 5k in 4th gear. Went with 5150 custom tune, now car pulls hard, and im actually beating some is38 gti's
@GladiatorGaming5 жыл бұрын
Some One Could you clarify about the JB4 I was thinking of buying one since you can do it yourself. Since APR needs to use your car It’s a pain in the ass to do it.
@SomeOne-on6yf5 жыл бұрын
@@GladiatorGaming the JB4 would cause random misfires and limp mode. And before George helped me tune it a bit. I was getting a trans code as well. i would get random CEL (P00000) and fuel rail pressure. I was also trying to fix it/tune it. And really just gave up. I was looking for flash tunes and went with cobb. Installing it was 10000× easier, as it's only a obd2 port plug. And the cobb ots pull much harder than JB4. Custom tune, feels and runs much better than the Cobb OTS.
@SomeOne-on6yf5 жыл бұрын
@@GladiatorGaming if you have a 7.5, for now, get the Cobb Accessport. Just the cobb OTS tune you'll enjoy. Maybe once JB4 has dialed in the 7.5 i would stay away. You can always stack later 😁

All the major tuner companies including APR are discontinuing Stage 2 and downpipes. The major tuner companies are now owned by Holly (the company who was once famous for Holly carbeuretors). Apparently Holly is anticipating potential future liability related to emissions. Sounds a little bit like dieselgate in the making. I first learned about this from Medic Magic's KZbin channel, then confirmed it yesterday when I visited my dealer's tuner shop.

Hey Charles - great video. Just purchased a brand new 7.5 final addition R with DSG. Low torque vs High torque TUNE .... Does the DSG tune cause accelerated wear of the wet clutch packs ? and if so how do you explain this to the VW dealership ?

would have been cool to do low torque vs high torque on the dyno to compare the numbers. I called IE and the rep said that the stage 1 high torque file provides 50 additional torque over the low torque file, while i don't believe (even if crank torque).

I have the APR stage 1 (93) in my '16R, and it was a gamechanger. Very suprised how MUCH extra power I got from just a software upgrade. I went with APR cuz that's what my VW mechanic was selling at the time, but I wish I had more personal control over flashing. Always wondered why they didn't come that way stock. I know that VW nerfed the stock power for the mk7.5's because of some european BS regulations. but still.

A tuning company in the UK have mapped a lot of these to around 380-390 stage 1 that is usually with a full induction kit, turbo inlet, turbo muffler delete, obviously with a flash map like your you won't get as good gains as this but still not bad at all

ok, I'm game. sad really, that even after spending $30k+ for a car, that you the buyer HAVE to buy an aftermarket ECU tune to actually get the most out of the car. I am currently experiencing that on my very new 2019 WRX. Man, I cannot modulate the clutch/gas as smoothly as in my 04 GTI. In time I guess. Thanks Charles, enjoy the tune. Cheers.
