It is rather cheap to live in Shanghai as a young single professional. Awesome choice for someone seeking a more dynamic life style. However, when it comes to raising a family and other big ticket items such as buying a home or a car, healthcare, and education, it becomes exponentially unaffordable rapidly for expats. Not the best choice of value for families......
@VickyHui3 жыл бұрын
That might be true but I think most expat with families comes with family package so their company will compensate most of the expenses. In regards of buying houses it's quite expensive in Shanghai. Unless you want to stay in China long term not many expats will buy houses in China.
@nggary77263 жыл бұрын
@@VickyHui frankly speaking, salary-wise, Shanghai is not bad at all wrt maintaining a normal life style. But to substantiate the same life quality (with a family) as in most US cities, you would probably need substantially more money. What I saw was that these generous expat packages were disappearing (as local talents can do the job equally well, or preference over local business experience, or whatever reasons). It is still fun to work in Shanghai and I wish I would have the chance to do so again - would I relocate my family to SH permanently? Pretty unlikely :)

I born in shanghai and live in shanghai. If kid get education in gov school,it cost very very low price. And if you have insurance from job. Medical service cost is super low too. Is 10000 CNY net per month enough to stay in Shanghai and have a bit of savings as a single expat? Breakfast & Lunch, Transport, accommodation will be provided by Company.
@VickyHui Жыл бұрын
Rent is a big part of living cost in China. So if rent, Breakfast & Lunch, Transport is covered by your company, you should be ok to be comfortable. However, depends where you live, eating out could be expensive in Shanghai, like having a drink at a bar - 1 beer is 50 RMB. Being able to save or not depends on your lifestyle and location.

Shanghai is 2nd place in first tier city list, so rent reflects it. In China you can go low rent in really old neighborhoods and still be safe, in USA you would probably end up dead within a year if you lived in the "slums."
