Thank you for supporting your local farmers! I grew up on a farm in South Dakota with milk cows and then married a cattle rancher there. I can tell you personally how much they appreciate any support they can get. Also, buying locally generally means getting higher-quality meat than what you'd find in a grocer store. Great video!! ❤❤

So many comments on this video just can relate so much to this. For organization of 1/2 cow also aways put new things on bottomn, but always put old things in a box/s on top so i make sure they are used first and i know exactly what is old. But if you dont have room for a box i will mark them with some kind of VERY visible that makes them very distinctly different. Like BIG red marker X on "older" meat to use first. Nice that yours have different colores lables from different cows. Mine are from same butcher each time and look identical. And im sure like many i start making meals that use up the "older" meat.

@@deeleesee46 I just saw something about this on Facebook. A lady said her dad buys her & her large family a half beef & a half pig every single year for Christmas. She said he’d rather know she and her family have food all year instead of random things under the tree they may or may not use. She said it has blessed their family so much because it eliminates a huge expense from their grocery bill all year long. I’m definitely tucking that away for when my kids are older with families of their own. It’s such a great idea!

Beef short ribs are good to make shredded beef for tacos. Have you ever tried beef heart? You trim off the fat and slice it flour and brown in the pan. Let it simmer in beef gravy for a few hours. It’s very yummy and tender. You would not know it heart. We use a rubber mallet to break the ice on the inside of the freezer. Just hit it a few times and it falls apart. I put the similar cuts into either paper sacks or hard sided reusable grocery bags. Makes it easier to organize and find things.

Question #1: Do you have a heated garage, or does it get hot in the summer and cold in the winter? If so, how does the freezer cope with the external temperature changess? Question #2: Do you have a generator, or does the freezer hold its temperature when the power goes out? Thanks for the info--I'm definitely planning on getting a freezer, so any input helps! 🙂

For me: short ribs will be turned into broth (not enough meat for us); the only time I've gotten a sizeable amount of bones is when my uncle started butchering and finally understood what I'm asking for (quarts and quarts of broth vs 1 pot of soup); when we had dogs I had them grind up the organ meats so I could use it in homemade dog food; brisket is turned into hamburger. I have had and made brisket many different ways and I just cannot get over the texture and fat. I'd rather have burger over it. I've not gotten fat to render yet, but have been offered it. ❤

Kathy, you’re completely right that grocery prices are high and buying in bulk all at once won’t work for everyone. We volunteer at our local food pantry and I strongly urge you to find one nearby and take advantage of it. Ours only requires a local address to receive a share of food. There’s no income requirement and you can receive food every 30 days. The recipients get meat, pizzas, canned goods, pasta, snacks, eggs, frozen fruit cups, bakery items, fresh produce and a couple of hygiene items. It’s there for anyone needing a boost and I can tell you that it brings joy to the volunteers to be able to help provide food for families.
