Hi Nicki The olive picking seems like a lot of work/hours for someone who has no plans to sell the oil. Does he do it because he's retired or does he make olive oil and still go to a full time job? I'm curious how he maintains such a large scale operation and still earn an income doing something else.

Hello my dear Carlo here, some times I think of myself that I am capable of working hard, and in part I believe that it is true, but what I can do is nothing compared to what my neighbor and friend Michele, him, does. and a few years older than me, but he is not retired, he has a full time job, and he has taken more than half of his vacation to pick olives, and now the holidays are over, but the olive harvest is not! So in the next month (I think) he will use his free time after work, to continue the olive harvest, Michele is really a tireless worker, I have known him since I was a child, and I have never seen him do anything but work, I know , or rather I think I know how he manages to work so hard, it is passion, an incredibly gigantic passion, which he has in the things he does, and it is also love, immeasurable love he has for his land, for traditions and for respect. of the memory of the people who like him worked so hard in that land! Believe me I'm not exaggerating, Michele is one of the people I know, that I respect most, and you and whoever reads this comment will know what I think of my friend Michele, more than himself, because I have never said this to Michele, maybe because we are men, and we don't need to tell each other some sweet things! Thank you for giving me the opportunity by answering your question to say what I think about my friend Michele!💕😘

@@NickiPositano Oh Wow! This reply is so informative and filled with such genuine affection 💙 You answered my question thoroughly and I'm truly encouraged by Michele's hard work and generosity, (harvesting the olives and then sharing all that oil) it really makes me think twice about my life and how selfish I can be with my time off. He is a good person and you are equally blessed to call each other friend and neighbour. Thanks so much Carlo for taking the time to reply, this has made my day 😁 I'm sending my family's love to yours, from South Africa 💚

Lololo you make it sound like a third world country. “Their culture?” They are Italians! Their culture says you can stay at 5 star hotels for $1,500 per night in Positano and eat in Michelin rated restaurants!! If you want high season in summer you have to book a year in advance. Just to get budget friendly $250 per night you stay down the road not in Positano. Just because someone owns a small olive orchard doesn’t make them quaint old world! Sounds like a friendly small community who are neighborly like a lot of American small towns without $1,000 a night hotels and infinity pools.

@@mircat28 Having grown up in a Quaint Old Town of extreme wealth in a third world country, ( US nationals of German/English Italian descent) there are extremes of poverty and opulence. There is hard work being done. Power outages affect ALL. Water rationing. Facts. This Family has forged a very unique life that involves hard work, creative solutions. Sunsets that are magical. Many aspects are equal, regardless of socioeconomic spot in the community. When a house is inherited, it allows certain stability, comfort, yet challenged, Cash flow. Keep in mind this town took a financial hit, (as the rest of the world) Because tourism generates so much if the cash required to keep their homes running. Unique challenge. Worldwide many went online. Thankfully Carlo had steady employment, Caring for the Cemetery. Bartering is a reality, and creative solutions are a must. I applaud the amazing creative support Nicki lends to local merchants, weaving the shops and wares into the film. Kayaking, always directs to the Local Guides. They are ALL aiming to be uplifting and resourceful. BRAVO 👏 My in-laws went the gamut / Criss cross of harvesting coffee, making cheese from milk brought from the hacienda, skillful embroidering. These tasks are done by everyone from the farmer to the Landowner. It is a life not lived by those who anchor themselves on the US continent. It can have extreme wealth, and Everything in between.

A few mocked The Way it was done. ALL were very protective of the Patriarchal/Matriarchal ways. Jabs were met with quick united rebuttal. It was quite fascinating to have experienced. People outside of the continental US have lives, create solutions, and merge cultures. In One Family, patriarchs and matriarchs are from different continents, the kids married Women who were Combination German hispanic. Italian Hispanic. One was Mexican Chinese Spaniard. Her husband half latin, Half US. Their kids were blond, blue eyed, freckles with Almond shaped eyes. Stunning. She had her black hair, blue eyes, looked like her half Chinese Mother. Then add in grandkids who married. Learned English in London. British accents by latins. That was a normal family dynamic. Four languages being spoken at one table. An amazing melting pot. People forge, in one family, their own culture. One mountain town has One crop that built the large homes, and produced work for laborers far and wide. Yes, disparities. Thank you for filming the olive harvest. For those of us who only can buy a bottle from a grocery store we have no idea how labor intensive the olive harvest is. It was very gracious of your neighbor to allow filming it to share it to us. I hope he might allow us to see the pressing and bottling of the oil sometime. And, Carlo, you always do a great job of taking us places and showing us around. We appreciate it is difficult many times with the number of people who may be around.

I really do despair about some people that own certain breeds of dog. To say they are irresponsible is the understatement. That said. The views of that villa and gardens are breathtaking. Hi. Thank you for your bravery in showing the dog incident. We know you are the kind of folks that describe yourself as your animals ‘mommy’ and ‘daddy’ so it cannot be easy to show reality. I’m a park ranger and have a constant battle to get dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash. It’s always ‘ she won’t harm anyone’ , ‘he’s under control’ , ‘she loves children’….Then the next day on TV we see another child’s life wrecked after being bitten by a little cute dog that never bit anyone before. No bar of chocolate will repair their scars. So huge applause for using your platform to show the reality.

And this is why Italians live longer than many other nations. I am much further north in Italy but all the Italians I know eat at regular times, do not overeat and are active up to their tenth decade. We feel sympathy when we see a death notice for anyone under 90. All that, plus strong espressos daily and vino and digestivo to aid digestion. Wonderful lifestyle…active and balanced. i’m missing the olive harvest this year so loved watching yours, Nicky.

Seeing this video and you telling us that Michael has 700 olive trees and he is only harvesting 300 and watching them hand pick the olives and carrying back in a bucket on his back makes me realize (though I knew before how olives were picked and made into olive oil) and appreciate just how much work is involved and no wonder it is so expensive. When I was on holiday in Pisciotta the lady I hired the flat from gave us some of her olive oil from her property and it was nothing like the shop bought it was absolutely delicious. So I can imagine how Michael olive oil must taste like. I am glad Rosie was not hurt badly by the dog, but a very nasty experience for her and Elizabeth. Hard work collecting the olives. It’s good to have friends and family to help, followed by a good lunch. A very tiring but terrific day.

My dad worked for Texas State Commission (omission) For the Blind and the "cooking without looking" book was only 1950's recipes using Campbell's Soup and there was absolutely nothing fresh. Your new cookbook, and the one you did with Rosie and Leni are absolutely perfect for people who need, and love, great food when they have low vision.... or are little children like Leni and Rosie, with exquisite taste. We often use spiral-bind books for students with visual disabilities, so that they can use their text enlarging and audio devices to try out new recipes. Like yours!

Thank you, Nicki and Carlo, for such a lovely video showing the olive harvest, etc. I love seeing Ravello. It’s close to my heart now after having stayed there. So sorry about Rosie and Elisabeth and the dog encounter but glad they’re okay. Speaking of dogs, as always, I love seeing sweet Holly and Indie. 🥰 I’m very interested to see the price you work up for a printed and bound copy of your book. Best wishes, Marlene

Very nice to see olive harvest. Nice to see how your community shares with each other. Glad Rosie was not seriously hurt but that can truly harm anyone mentally even if you are a dog owner. So sad that had to happen.

ohh Rosie and elizabeth, how scary for this to happen. Ravello is just how I remember it, stunning! when we were there one year, we did see the stage that looks like it's floating in the clouds, no concerts the day we were there, but how magical it would be. olive harvest so much fun and hard work, but so worth it, to have your own oil😋 Grazie again, to you all for letting us share your everyday Positano 💗

I loved seeing how the olive harvest goes! Even with machines that help separate the olives from the leaves, it is still very labor-intensive. And was that the momma dog of Indie? I'm so glad Rosie is ok; what a scary moment for her and you and Elisabeth. We understand that you can't always film; you DO have a life besides KZbin! So no apologies, please! 😃BTW, I didn't see that big crane in Positano. Is the parking garage complete?

Thank you for sharing the olive harvest, it’s not easy work and completely understand that it’s not possible to film all the time. You both do an awesome job with the vlogs, more than enough content each week 😊. So glad Rosi and Elizabeth are okay, and yes Chocolate 🍫 always makes everything better! Seeing the flowers 🌺 in the gardens at this time of year is just so pleasing, especially when here in Alberta Canada, the growing season and harvests are done for the year. Thank you for sharing and see you next week!

Positano and the surrounding areas are so beautiful. We are visiting next October and I cannot wait. We saw it briefly during a cruise a couple years ago but so looking forward be staying there for a couple weeks. Your weekly videos are so helpful to me to get an idea of what we will see. I realize it is very different living someplace vs visiting but it's nice to see your side of it. You are both so sweet and kind and seem to have such a happy life together. May your happiness continue on and on. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. And, I am glad your friend and her little girl were unharmed by the dog. Also amazed by how hard you all work daily to have what you have, It's beautiful to see how everyone pitches in to help each other.

Glad Rosie and Elizabeth are okay! It made me remember a tip I got once. If a dog is biting someone, try pick up it's hind legs and it will release it's bite immediately.

Once again, a lovely video. Loved the olive harvesting. Glad Rosie is fine now (could have been much worse). Hopefully, that will be a lesson to not let dogs run loose without owners present. The remainder of the video was excellent. Beautiful and stunning photos. Thank you again for sharing parts of your week and your life with us :)
