Who better than to teach us how to make Zeppole (donuts made with potatoes) and Struffoli than an ex pastry chef and twice winner of the Positano Christmas Donut Competition? Aniello invited me over to his house to make Struffoli and Zeppoli, which are traditional Italian Christmas sweets.
Here are the recipes he used:
Struffoli
500g flour
150g sugar
4 eggs + 1 yolk
25g butter
Mix ingredients into a pastry, roll out into breadsticks and cut into tiny pieces. Fry in a deep pan in very hot oil until golden. Struffoli are usually served drizzled in honey and sprinkled with hundreds and thousands.
Zeppole
1 kilo potatoes
1 kilo flour
1 glass of warm milk
100g yeast
100g sugar
100g butter
pinch of salt
Dissolve the yeast in the warm milk. Mix ingredients into a pastry. Roll into sausages, cut sausages into balls, roll each ball into a donut shape and squash the ends together. Fry them in a shallow pan, each side until golden then roll them in sugar mixed with cinnamon. Eat immediately 😁

It's the simple life with friends and loved ones such as this that i really crave for. Nothing is ostentatious and showy So I don't envy the very rich, I envy people like Nikki, Carlo and those surrounded by nature's abundance, beautiful beaches and friendly people :-)

Your dad talking at the end was quite amusing. His observations were so funny! He was saying how strange it is, that there are so many donuts around Christmas time. Boxes and boxes filled with dozens and dozens of donuts. When he was talking about how instead of drinking alcohol, people are eating donuts, that was really good. He was like, why are people bringing so many boxes of donuts in picnic baskets at the beach!! Then he went on about how the donuts do not have jam or do not have cream, just plain sugar sprinkled donuts. I think he is right, donuts are a religion and a ritual there. Yes Nikki, I think one thing we did learn, is that donuts are a true obsession and a calling there. I had no idea donuts were such a big deal in italy!!!

Brings back memories of making lots and lots of struffoli for Natale with my Neapolitan mom and sisters. Aniello's method is brilliant! Buon natale e felice anno nuovo a la famiglia di Positano Diaries. Grazie per questi momenti piacevoli!

Nicki. Tell your father that it is customary to make doughnuts at Christmas here in Nova Scotia, among the Acadian culture, which has spread to much of the general population. They could be made ahead because doughnuts keep very well in the pantry. Have a very happy and safe Christmas to you and all your family and friends ❤️

Hi Nicki I was delighted to come across one of your videos yesterday and have been binge watching lots more since! We live a similar Mediterranean lifestyle in southern Spain on the outskirts of a whitewashed village in the mountains. Whilst we are not on any level as self sufficient as you we do enjoy a similar life enjoying the sunny climate and a warm friendly culture 😌

My Italian Grandmother (Avellino, immigrated to the New York City area where many did) used to make Struffoli at every holiday (with honey and the little multi-colored candies). I miss her terribly. I spend a month of most every year in England and your Father doesn't have a typical accent - he almost sounds slightly American. Love your channel!

apologies - didn't mean to imply he was other than English - just that his accent isn't as pronounced/typical to my ear
