How Much Paint Will I Need To Paint My Car?

A common question is, How Much Paint Will I Need To Paint My Car?
There is no real 1 size fits all answer because the type of paint you use, the size of the car and gun you use will all be contributing factors but that aside I have a general rule of thumb as I will list below.
Full Respray inside and out on mid-sized sedan: 4 litres of colour 2:1 (6 litres mixed) and a 7.5-litre clear kit. This will generally leave you with some to spare but it's always handy as you may need it in future.
My general rule of thumb for 2:1 solvent-based basecoat is listed below, again if the panels are extra large or small it may vary, also some reds, yellows, greens & coarse metallic colours may require a ground coat or just a bit more to achieve coverage. The basecoat estimates are before thinner.
Door: In & Out (300ml), Out Only (200ml)
Fender: 150ml
Bonnet/Hood: In & Out (550ml), Out Only (300ml)
Boot/Trunk Lid: In & Out (500ml), Out Only (280ml)
Roof: 300ml
Bumper Bar: 300ml
Quarter Panel: 200ml
MS Clear Coat, these estimates are after hardener has been added.
Door: In & Out (300ml), Out Only (200ml)
Fender: 150ml
Bonnet/Hood: In & Out (650ml), Out Only (400ml)
Boot/Trunk Lid: In & Out (550ml), Out Only (300ml)
Roof: 350ml
Bumper Bar: 350ml
Quarter Panel: 210ml
HS Clear Coat, these estimates are after hardener has been added.
Door: In & Out (250ml), Out Only (130ml)
Fender: 110ml
Bonnet/Hood: In & Out (500ml), Out Only (300ml)
Boot/Trunk Lid: In & Out (450ml), Out Only (250ml)
Roof: 300ml
Bumper Bar: 250ml
Quarter Panel: 140ml

(Cover the basic procedures, maybe hint at ways to save money, like removing stickers, vinyls, or do your own remove and refitting) How can I protect my fresh paint? (Cover tips and tricks to keeping paint clean or avoiding scratches) How do I know if a body shop is shady? (Cover warning signs of a bad shop, things to look for when in for an estimate) This is a biggie, a lot of people can't tell the difference between a quality shop, and a shady poor quality shop, and can get taken advantage of. What colour should I paint my car? (Cover looking at different colour chips, the differences between a metallic, pearl, and other effect colours, common colours that people tend to pick) Just some ideas, love the content.

Throwing a blender your way Gunman. Have a sewing machine that would benefit from a fresh pain job, a Singer 96k41, not too curvy. The machine is to be used I.e not a show piece hence durability is key. Not fussy about decals but could put something funky on. Any ways, your take on how best to approach this greatly appreciated.

If you have a few different containers of color, always mix them together in a big container to make sure that the color is even. After mixing it, you can put it back in the smaller containers

Any idea how much to spray an 05 Dodge Ram crew cab with a short bed. Probably using a metallic dark grey and spi clear. It’s a respray of a close shade. I need to paint a bed to match and rocker repairs so I figured I’d do the whole thing or at least the sides minus the hood and roof. I used Matrix UG code white pearl 2011 Ford Taurus Limited. Had no concern with the clear but the white base colour off quite a bit despite some tweeking Have to redo despite doing a spray out card which looked fine. Two white,3 clear (approx.). Will be switching to PPS Shop line for second attempt.Maybe the painter also(me).

Iv found it depends on the brand of paint too. I used solvent glasurit for ages then tried baslac which is cheaper but still made by glasurit. Baslac coverage was pretty average

Dear Gunman, I’ve been following you on KZbin. Based on what I’ve gathered, I’m looking at a pair of FLG-5 guns 1.8 primer for epoxy primer and 1.4 2 Part polyurethane topcoat and 2 Part polyurethane clear topcoat. I’m going to paint a 1979 Cessna 182Q 4 place all aluminum aircraft stripped to bare metal. This aircraft has top mounted wings which will need a ladder to reach to paint the top surface. Each wing panel surface (I.e. left top wing) is about 10 square meters area (100 square feet). My question is, do I get a gravity gun or should I go for a pressure feed gun and a 2 quart pressure cup system? Thanks!

also a good thing for diy guys to do would be to double up on the clear after you spray it go in the next day wet sand it down and give it two more coats to give yourself a good build up that way you can polish out all the dirt runs and orange peel also the i believe the standox rep for our shop said you can spray over it up to 24 hours after spraying without sanding we tried it at the shop once and it came out fine so that might be another good option

Usually if I'm doing a home job and I start getting shit in the paint that I cant pick out, I'll just give it an extra coat. It's less work than coming back to re-clear it. 2-3 full coats of clear is quite a bit to sand and fix imperfections.

well the reason i suggest that isnt just imperfections most guys doing it at home arent going to get a great finish off the gun and doing this theyll get decent build and wont have to worry to much about cutting and buffing th whole car

Glad you posted this ! So here is a question I hope you can answer. I am restoring a mustang (1966 - Red - From scratch) and the fenders and doors I will be doing apart from the car. The car will also get painted in, out, trunk, under good, under trunk ...at 4 liters that's slightly over a gallon US but I have been told order 2 (8 liters) and mix them so I have uniform color doing things separately. Is that overkill ? I am a newbie so will not be able to stretch efficiently as you might...Thoughts? BTW...when I watch you paint its like watching an artist...so relaxed and proficient

get the 2 gallons. Red needs more to cover, and youre doing in and out and both sides of all your panels. you shoundnt have to combine both of them as they will be new.

In between the primer and first base coat, there is a "sealer" you spray on the primer to help with silver paint. What's the name of this, beside sealer? I'm trying to find some in a spray can and I can't figure out what to search for so I can purchase some. Thanks.

My car has been resprayed a couple of times in the last 8 years. It has gone shades darker since they just keep adding new base coat and clear. I compared it to orginal bumper that was not painted. What about spraying factory style "metallics" ? Remove gun filter? should I not use a paper paint filter/strainer? Wifes car has quite a bit of peeling clearcoat on hood(bonnet) and trunk(boot). Its a Mitsubishi, paint code P26 (Rally Red Metallic). Do I need to get complex when spraying like adding intercoats? Or just spray the base and clear over it?

I've been using a GPi with a 1.8 for primer and a Pro Lite with a 1.3 TE20 for Base/Clear and direct gloss. Seems to work well. The GPi with a 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 tip combo is a good all-round gun if you only want to have a single gun.

1995 Lancer Evo III, Scotia white, direct gloss 2K. Onto factory Scotia white, would you recommend an isolator primer first? Or just prep work then colour?.. jameswil hello mate. Two pack lacquer will dry as long as the temperature is above 5 degrees c. To dry your base coat, solvent or water base, go on eBay and buy a dog grooming hair dryer. They will blow up to 70 degrees c and the strength of air flow is incredible. Will dry a coat of water base at home in my garage quicker than the heated booths do where I work. They’re around £50. Hope this helps.

Writing in from Ontario, Canada. Question: 1) What paint is better to paint a car. Water Based Base Coat/ Clear Coat or Solent Based Base Coat Clear Coat? I know California, USA is big on Water Based Paints. But here in Canada we are unrestricted in what we can use. What brand in Base Coat/Clear Coat would be good to paint, Engines, Transmissions, drive Shafts, Rear Differentials, Springs, Gas Tanks, Engine Parts. etc. I do a lot of smaller parts painting. Looking for a good durable paint that I can clear Coat over too. Not into Matt or Non Gloss paint jobs. Also a good paint and clear gloss that I could use on outside TV Towers, Rotors and TV Antennas. Usually this stuff is subjected to extreme heat +32C in the Summer here with high UV Rays causing fading. In the Winter extreme cold of -25C. So looking for a good Paint and Clear Gloss to go over the Antenna, Rotor and Tower. The reason for painting the above parts is rust damage. They use a lot of road salt to melt ice here, from November to mid April, once dry it blows everywhere corroding all galvanized steel, aluminum and steel.

Is there any benefit or downside to putting on a large amount of clear coats? I plan on doing a complete respray on my old VK wagon. And I plan to do atleast 7 coats of clear, hearing it can make the paint look alot deeper (by complete respray I mean all panels off, engine bay done. Light spray on inside etc). The car is getting old so I want to cut out any rust. And basically have every surface painted and ready for a rebuild.

+azazeldeath if you're painting in acrylic then yeah maybe 7+ coats but if 2k then there's nothing to gain, you'll end up with way too much material on the car which is prone to chipping and cracking, a simple flow-coat would be more than enough while enhancing the depth. Spray it like clear. Nothing crazy thick on the first coat, and you can go a little harder on the second coat.

when spraying a single stage I always load up a gun with a reducer so that if you happen to see dry spots when your done you can hit it with the reducer so the shine comes back.(word of caution) dont pound the reducer on!

Cesar Furumoto yes, for a full respray inside and out on a mid-sized sedan, as I said you usually have a bit left over but that's handy, another thing is that 7.5lt kits are common but not many companies sell clear by the litre from what I know and even if they did it would likely cost similar to buy 3 1lt cans as 1 7.5lt kit.

We all had a first time. Make sure everything is very clean. Prime it all and wet sand the primer with 400 grit then to 600 grit. Clean and paint. Have fun.

WHY do you start at the bottom and work up. When I've done this I've somehow eventually accidently touched the car or my hose has nicked the car. I was told and taught to start at the top and work down. Thanks

im just learning from this channel and have only done my roof so far, final prep on the drivers side. Im gonna throw out its the contour of the car so you odd angle up overspray of fender wells and skirt etc get pulled in immidiately on the first horizontal pass....honestly not sure but thats my logic

2.5-3L un-thinned if it's a 2:1 mix, that will mean 3-4.5L thinned out. Hope that makes sense

@@jaywalkercrew4446 any good quality painter will fill it anyways just to make it look perfect assuming thats the ONLY small dent on the car. Its all about reputation. I always fill dents for free up to 3 of them. If there are more than 3 I won't do them.
