I totally agree with you about being friends with the photographer. My first wedding shoot was done with a gentleman I went to high school with and is friends with my cousin. We were in tune with each other, and barely had to speak, and just knew what we needed to get and stay out of each others way. My question is how willing are couples to "redo" things? I know the day is often hectic and there is a time crunch. When you ask them to read the note again (if they have one of course) or anything along those lines, have you ever had any push back? Or are they so excited, in your experience, that they don't mind contributing to a great wedding video. Keep up the great stuff Kraig!

What part of the day do you record higher frame rates? I know 24p gives a cinematic look, but at what times of the day is it safe to be rolling at 60+ so if you want you can do slow-mo in post? Thanks.
@elb70328 жыл бұрын
I think if you have the gear capable to keep a high resolution at 60fps, then go for the higher framerate, it's not as if you can't reduce the framerate in post. However, if you want to slow some bits down in post then you could shoot at 60fps at the reception when people are dancing, when the bride is walking down the isle and at the pronouncement of marriage. If you were asking about the time of day rather than which part of the wedding, then I accidentally haven't answered your question.:D
@TheseDaysAreDead8 жыл бұрын
+ELB But don't you lose light when you double your shutter speed to 120+ when you switch to 60fps? And receptions usually need more light. Thanks!
@elb70328 жыл бұрын
TheseDaysAreDead I was thinking of that, but I thought that I wasn't answering your question, silly me. Great point you made there, and you're correct. Light is critical when you're recording in low light receptions, so the options are to go wide open on the aperture and to use the highest ISO appropriate (a little bit of noise shouldn't hurt because the people who will watch it won't be focusing on the flaws of the video). Even though light is what you really need there, you'll rather have a slightly darker image that plays back in slow motion smoothly than having to use a brighter image that is choppy. And remember you can use twixtor in some cases. :)

Hi Kraig, I like what you said about saying no to gigs. This is my first year as a professional wedding videographer, and it is going great. I turned down my first client, she just didn't trust me, and I had this bad gut feeling. So I politely walked without any unnecessary explanation, before contracts or deposits ever got involved. Felt good, it was the right call. So my question is, what red-flags do you look for to tell you a client is not a good fit for your services? Cause I want to be able to work with difficult clients, I think that is a skill I should develop, but I would love to hear some stories or examples of telling the difference between a difficult but worthwhile client, and a dead-end cut and run client.

Question I left on another one of your videos I'd like addressed... When shooting solo, for the ceremony, and say you have 3 cameras, 2 on tripods, 1 on monopod. You mentioned you just keep footage rolling. However, most cameras have a 20 or 30 minute limit. Besides hacking it with magic latern, how do you go about that? Since most cameras, at least mine, will stop and won't start a new clip.
@spencertheobald5098 жыл бұрын
Please answer this!
@ShawnBoyle8 жыл бұрын
+Scott J I shoot solo, and thankfully my cameras have no timers. But if they did, I usually work my way around the perimeter with my main cam getting some b-roll shots of parents and guests, and along the way I will check in on my camera 2 and 3 to make sure they didn't crash or to check the focus point. So just plan to visit cameras, and get a feel for that safe 10 minute window between the wedding intro and the rings (I call the rings the third act), to get your b-roll closeups and check in with the extra cameras.

I was advised to just accept any priced weddings until I started getting more weddings and higher the price. However yesterday I had a client who wanted two days, full 6 hour party with highlights reel and 1 hour video. Then the second day 12 hour with highlights reel and 1 hour video. And they wanted it for £500 which I didn't accept and offered £750 instead for the two days. I was advised to take weddings for £350 but I can't accept constant offers of that low as it tags you as that person is cheap

RAW is for photography, (100% certain GH5 can shoot RAW photos) you'll want to shoot in V-Log for video, it'll make the cc easier in the edit

Praveen Anbarasu the Sony A7S II is good in low light for weddings is full frame and has 5 axis image stabilization. and no you don't need RAW video. That is most important or primarily in photos. A7SII has some great picture profiles for grading but that depends on how much you want to grade. Or you can just use more good out of camera picture profile and just touch it up in post. This is primarily for video, as for photography it's good but other cameras might be better.

This is my first wedding gig and so I charge at a minimum price, not too low and not to high, basically I used up all I am going to earn to buy gear, batteries, nd filter, lights, quick release plates etc... I have no way to pay someone to assist me or to look for my stuff, my concern that has been bugging me is how can I protect my stuff from getting stolen, like leaving another camera unattended to capture groom reaction in the ceremony, I cannot picture out my self, carrying my light stand bag with me every time.. How do you guys work around this?
@WeddingFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
White balance we recommend using your kelvin settings and dialing them in for each major light changing situation. If you're in a pinch you can usually use the preset (not auto) WB settings like Outdoor Sunny, Outdoor Shade, Tungsten, etc. Definitely don't want to just leave it at 4500, that is going to give you some weird skin tones in most scenarios
@WeddingFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
Don't overdo it with gear on your first wedding. Don't give yourself more to worry about than is necessary. Yes things get stolen at weddings, but I've never had it happen in 15 years and I leave gear unattended pretty often. I don't leave all my gear unattended, but there are times where you can't be in two places at once. Ultimately, that is what insurance is for, but be smart about where you leave gear. For multiple reasons, you'll always want to leave it somewhere a little out of the way or less noticeable

Hey I was wondering if I could have some advice, I’ve recently filmed a wedding and the edit was a total of 8 mins. I was really impressed with the outcome as I thought it was shot really well. When I handed it to the client she was really angry because she wanted the video to last an hour. Now I showed her examples of wedding videos that were between 5-10 mins and she said she liked the style. So that’s what I did. I don’t really know what to do now as she’s refusing to pay.
