I am a 58 year old woman. Had a TKR this past March 2024. 5 months today. Doing really good. Physical Therapy was just "Amazing"!! I'm back to doing my housework, vacuum cleaning, washing floors & etc. I actually go in the yard & play catch with my German Shepherd. I will be honest it was rough but, I make time everyday to exercise my knee. Walking as I'm doing my housework or even go grocery shopping does help immensely. My stiffness isn't as much as it was in the beginning. My surgeon has said the stiffness will become less & less. "Positive, Mental Attitude" is my own destiny to get through this entire process!! 😊😊 Thank you 4 sharing your video Michelle from Illinois 😊😊

@carlasmith1579 I'm extremely active as well. You need to give your body a chance to heal. Do all your Physical Therapy. It does help a great deal. Honestly, at first it's hard but, keep with it & it does get easier.. stay "Positive"!! I'm 8 months postoperative now. I'm doing everything I did before at this point. I do take mini breaks. My stiffness I experienced, is just about diminished. Take time out throughout your day & exercise your knee!! Always, listen to your body. Good Luck with your upcoming surgery!! I wish you the very best!!

I’m 66 and have had a total ankle replacement and both shoulders replaced all with 20 months. Lessons learnt: 1) don’t come off pain killers too soon, you will regret it (sorry about the constipation) 2) Work at your recovery every day and then continue in the gym building muscle on what you’ve had done 3) Be confident, live your life- it’s what you had it done for! I’m on my 4th op next month, partial right knee replacement, then within next 12 months, the other knee then right hip. Bring it on!

I had both knees replaced. The first was 7/23 and the second was 1/24. I am back to intermediate yoga and can do most, but not all, of the poses. I did all prescribed PT each time. My therapists knew me and helped with specialized care. PT and proper movement are crucial for a full recovery. I still have some stiffness on sitting too much in the more recent knee but both are fully functional.

In my mind you cannot walk or bend your knee enough, My knee feels fantastic and l can bend it easily plus kneel on it now almost as normal. You will get trouble if you don’t exercise your knee enough in the early days.

I am a 71 old lady and had a partial knee replacement 7 weeks ago. The physio is very pleased with my progress and I can bend and straighten the leg well, but I have to admit it is still very sore especially if I have been sitting for a while it is hard to put my weight on it, and still need pain killers. The knee is not terribly swollen anymore. Just sore. Is that normal? I do all the exercises I am supposed to do, but last week I walked 2 km and it got really really sore.

I’m 58 female and had TKR in my right knee in May. I’m doing very well with that but what I found with walking and physical therapy was that my “old” left knee was really hurting. I’m bone on bone , no ACL with the left. So it was kind of a double edged sword for me to recover and walk… strengthening exercises were the same way. Did the best I could and when I get the left done next year hopefully I can walk more. It was almost like I felt the pain was more in the old knee and that’s the one that needed the ice when I was done.

Mike you're a champion, thanks for this. You've verified and clearly explained everything I knew to be true and have been lucky enough to administer since my TKR literally one week ago, I was on the table as I type this. First 24 hours were agony but eased nicely after that. Physio had me weight bearing on day two and I've been home from day 4. First attempt at 3x10m walking sessions in a day had me feeling it big style, so I've backed it off and do what I can to the point of discomfort or the ten minutes so as not to push it. Incredible how quickly you can feel the results if you listen to your body rather than blindly following a regime. I'm lucky in that our front door opens to a large shared tiled entrance, so walking down one tile track while keeping your eyes ahead on one point and trying not to sway. Slow starts and then build up until you're doing it without any pressure on the crutches. Such a great feeling of accomplishment, and the ice reward afterwards is heaven😂 Happy healing all!❤

The majority of the swelling and pain was gone after three weeks and I could walk normally around the house, climb the stairs and peddle a bike, however go for a walk outside, for any length of time, requires crutches. If you walk too much or do too many exercises then it's your sleep that's effected. I'm beginning my fourth week and every night while trying to get to sleep the sharp pains still radiates up from the foot to my knee then and on to my hip. Which means I have to take the hated codeine with it's side effect of constipation, meaning a laxative which screws up your bowel movements and even effects your stomach, sometimes nausea. It's not just the pain in your knee that wears you down it's the knock on effect of everything else.

I didn’t remember the amount of pain I would have (which was probably a good thing!) However, my rehabilitation is going well, and the overall results have been very good. It sounds like you didn’t have the best doctor. My providers have been very supportive and have even supplied additional pain meds when I needed it. I’m three weeks out from surgery now, and my need for painkillers has dropped considerably. I can walk unassisted, but still have to work on strength and range of motion. Thanks for stopping by to watch and for taking the time to share your experience. I’m sorry to hear that you are disappointed with your knee. Don’t be discouraged though because some of my patients didn’t feel 100% recovered until after a year! This recovery can be long especially if you’re someone that has to continue to do manual work as an occupation. Wishing you the best!

Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! And congratulations on both of your procedures! What I’ve observed with my patients is that every knee is so different. Most will have more difficulty with one knee whether that is observed right after the surgery or later down the road as in your case. Stick to your normal rehab routine and continue to emphasize flexibility and strength! Wishing you the best hope that helps!

Aunque duela. Creo que usted está asustado. No tema. Todo va a salir bien. Usted es muy joven. Puede sanar mejor que los que tenemos más edad. Animo.

This was a good video as I have loved walking for health/fitness for 50 yrs now 72, best exercise all over benefits, so was very interested with all you discussed. Had TKR left knee 3 1/2 mths ago. Certainly do have to pace yourself. Go out everyday walking with my 🐶 on pavers & grassed areas had to cut time down from 1 hr to 40 mins. as suffered too much knee pain. Come home elevate resting not using ice as much but massage knee area by hand. Found good idea to break time up going 2 walks a day. Still feel bit of pain if try walk too fast but not too bad. Still doing P/T & will keep that up for maybe 3 more months. Went Hydrotherapy for approx. 2 months advise all to go it was heaven & believe helped with ROM. Not giving up 😅 want to be independent walk forever love to do marathon walks. Thanks Dr. Mike.

Which surgical cut to open the knee for tkr is best for the patient? I have the choice of a straight cut down the front over the knee or a cut that goes around the knee (right leg) , as pictured in your you tube intro picture. Are there pros and cons to each?

Doctor,, after total knee placement other than walking ,how long one should do the excercises ? And how much time the numbness exist?
@MovewithDrMike
@MovewithDrMike 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! This is a great question and I think I will make an in depth video about this topic in the near future since many people are asking the same questions. When it comes to rehab I would say that the best way to recover back to 100% is to focus on your rehab for at least 12-16 weeks. Everyone is a bit different since some people might need to focus on more flexibility and others need more strengthening. Regardless after the 16 week mark there should be a progression with more advanced exercises. You may not be performing them everyday like you were right after surgery but you will want to continue on for the rest of your life with at least 2x per week for health and to maintain strength in your legs for longevity. Simply stopping everything would be a bad idea and you will likely lose a lot of the strength you gained. Hope that helps!

61, male, TKR on 12/23/2024. Wow.. and owww! 6 days out and I had some good parts and some bad parts. The good parts are that I can do all my toilet stuff myself, and I can stand and sponge bathe reasonably well using washcloths and cleaning wipes. I was able to use just a cane to walk 200+ feet at PT post-day 4. Not much pain at all. Surprised. Bad parts are that I paid for that PT walking, stretching and showing off to my wife with a leg that swelled up so tight I thought the stitches were going to pop. Could not bend it at all. Stayed elevated all night, with almost non-stop 50-55 degree F cold machine running (I'd turn it back on for its hour-long cycle several times during the night). An entire day later, the swelling subsided by about 20%, then more. Almost back to 'normal swelling' now. Therefore, walking any distance right now might be a recipe for acute swelling and pain to return. But you won't know until you try it, and then yes, it will be too late. I'm looking forward to the day when I won't be punished with painful swelling every time i stretch and walk. Maybe next week.

Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! I would say it really depends on what you define as ‘hiking.’ Things I would want to know is how vigorous is the hike (incline/decline), how many miles, and how long can you currently tolerate on your feet? With my experience my patients are normally confident enough to start going on small hikes after 4-6 months and then with time they progress to longer and more difficult hikes. Hope that helps take care

Surprisingly standing can sometimes be more difficult for some individuals especially since it requires you to have great stability and control in the knee muscles to prevent you from swaying or falling over. I had my TKR 2.5 years ago and I took my recovery seriously and put a plan into action 5 months before surgery. This surgery was brutal. Totally brutal. And each day brought new challenges, new milestones and my ability to reduce stress, pain, swelling. I hurt, but I was so happy I followed my surgeons advice, knowledge, and wisdom. I took prehab 5 months before my surgery and glad I did. My physical therapy AFTER surgery was 3 !! Once on the phone, once on zoom and once in person. He gave me the exercises, I did them , I demonstrated that I was doing them correctly, controlled my pain and swelling and that’s it. He told me that I didn’t need to come as I knew what I was doing, plus I was dedicated to doing the exercises daily, which made the difference. Everyone is different, we have different ways of dealing with our challenges and we all hope for good results.

Thank you for watching and I’m glad you found this video helpful! I would say if you have 98% range of motion then you’ll really have to decide whether your current mobility will limit you in the activities you want to participate in daily. For most people 98% is ENOUGH to keep them active and mobile without feel restricted. Ultimately it has to be a decision you make and that you’re comfortable with. Hope that helps a little

I just had my right knee done . TNR, I have a townhouse, and I have been sleeping on the couch. I'm 5 weeks out, and I am taking one step up the stairs at a time . I filled a laundry basket with everything I needed and brought it downstairs, so I had what I needed before the surgery. This has been really rough, to say the least . I've had friends spending the night to help me because I'm on a walker and I can't carry anything. Lots of swelling , pain , and tightness. Would I do it again 🤔 not so sure . I feel like I'm never going to get better, and it's been very emotional. Accept the help from family and friends because without them, I truly don't know what I would have done. Good luck with your surgery, and may you heal quickly .

@ thank you - well now on day 11 and I’m finding that when I feel good and want to push - I pay for it at night in increased swelling and pain. I did walk approx 3/4 mile today with just the cane for support. It was so wonderful to get outside and move! Unfortunately, very sore this evening and hard to sleep as I don’t want to take oxy. The temptation is to want to get back to pre surgery levels asap and not lose too much muscle or gain too much weight. Not used to laying around and really only enjoyed it for a few days - now bored. There’s only so many books to read or movies to watch. Friends and family busy with work etc. I advise people to take care of your knees so you don’t have to go through this. It’s too late for me but I wish I’d done more strength training and less running.

Thanks for stopping by to watch this one and for taking the time to comment! Stiffness after this type of procedure is very normal and daily stretching is going to be key to get rid of this for the long term. When you get a chance I’d recommend checking out my ‘Surgery Playlist’ on my channel where I have multiple videos where I go over some of my favorites exercises post op TKR. Check it out here 👉kzbin.info/aero/PLJSZ9UiXuFy9FZCwQsAHdIuEXXqfH6sW3&si=hr4RdrtcjqVNG8v5 Wishing you the best!

It’s really important after surgery that you emphasize and practice QUALITY walking! You don’t want to develop a limp so there are specific cues that can help! In this video I go over some of my favorite tips to think about! Check it out here and let me know what you think! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aH2Vi6Z9qNx_m6Msi=NJ3CIi6If1Zn7Fyt

My mom is 6 months past the bilateral knee surgery, but she can't bend her knees even 90° even when she exercises, She is in pain due to stiffness in her knee.How can I help my mom to bend her knee now?
@MovewithDrMike
@MovewithDrMike 25 күн бұрын
Thank you for watching and supporting the channel! I hope your mom is doing well and I’m sorry that she is still dealing with pain and stiffness. The best thing she can do for herself is to continue with aggressive stretching to help her restore as much range of motion back as possible in the knee. This would still be beneficial for her to do daily. She might also want to try placing a heat pack over the knee at least 15-20 minutes before stretching to help warm and loosen up the muscles/tissues prior to exercise.

Thank you for the video! I’m a 55 yo male in pretty good shape and very active (exercise 3-4x per week). I’ll be having TKR in less than 2 months. After watching several videos on the TKR experience and reading the comments section, I am terrified! Looks like I’m in for some serious pain post op. I’ve had the same knee scoped 4 times and had surgery for a torn Labrum (SLAP tear), so I’m no stranger to surgery pain but TKR pain is a whole different level from what I’ve learned. 😟 I’m hoping that my level of fitness will help speed up my total recovery time.

Thank you for watching and most of all for taking the time to comment here! I’m wishing you the best of luck in your upcoming procedure and I definitely know that your fitness level will help with your recovery! Everyone’s experience is so different from this procedure and and there are many variables that can affect your pain. Either way take it one day at a time and focus on what you CAN control! Wishing you the best and let me know if there are any other video topics you’d like for me to cover in the future!

Thanks for taking the time to watch here! Like I discuss in this video start off with small increments and you can begin that first week. It’s really important to monitor and listen to your body during this time. Returning to the gym might be closer to 4-6 months depending on how your recovery at home goes. Stay encouraged you got this!

If only my DH would realize that trying to get back to "normal" isn't about walking and biking for hours....but he will not listen to anyone...so we'll see what happens. No one can tell him anything....going through that procedure should have been a wake up to listen to the experts...he'll keep going because he thinks it will help him get back to work faster.
