I saw a thirteen year old comment after the video so... I’m also 13 and I’ve been looking for a old Cessna 152, and scholarships available to start my flight training. SR-22 is also my favorite aircraft specifically the turbo version. I’ve been doing free courses on Embry Riddle. I also have a yoke and throttle like your flight sim at my home and practice a lot with it. I’m heading to Sun N Fun to hopefully really kick start my future career. Love the video. Didn’t even think of how much it would be to fly an SR-22. Keep up the great work.

Great practical advice. I did some very similar calculations when I started my nav training. I already had the required hours in RA for the PPL so I really just needed to knock over some very specific navs (class D, C, and the Nowra VFR lane). Because the actual navigation exercise was the mission and not just building hours, I found it was cheaper to hire a $410/hr, 125 knot (wet + duel) 172 XP than it was to hire the $340/hr, 95 knot Warrior! Something for every new pilot to think about.
@jamesfrench24546 жыл бұрын
In a similar vein, the DA20's I started my nav flights in have ended up being too busy with ab initio students to make them a practical option when I go back and finish the last three. The instructor was shepherding me in the direction of the 172SP (at ~$330/hr) when I do go back. A friend of mine hires his Mooney M20C at a really good wet rate (actually better than what I can hire the DA20 for), so I went off and got my MPPC/RU endorsements to use that as my regular just going for fun aircraft. That pushed me down the rabbit hole of looking at finishing my PPL in the school's M20J. It's only about $10/hr more expensive than the 172, but it zips along about 40-50kts faster so it's very much a no-brainer.

407 AUD = about 285 USD (today). That's really good. The wet rate in my club for an SR22 is 340 USD and that doesn't include a surcharge for fuel if you don't buy fuel at a cheaper location. (The club buys full service fuel from a local FBO and pays up the rear for it. The SR20 that we have is 250 USD per hour. Prices aren't cheap in the Chicago area.

Nice video! One thing that really skews the numbers is the time spent on the ground as that's simply $/min rather than $/nm. So the SR22 will cost a heap more if you've got lots of taxiing or holding to do. Once in the cruise it can become cheaper for the larger/faster aircraft. So at some point it could cross over to be cheaper for the larger/faster aircraft (although not in this example of SR20 vs SR22). Do landing fees differ between the two at Moorabbin?

Interesting exercise and clearly explained Stef. I would imagine that the majority of your supporters would have followed it to the end in order to find out what the bottom line comparison worked out to be. What happens when you fly away and land? (For example if you had the aircraft for a day but only did 3 hours flying). Is there a minimum hourly rate per day?
@maxwellmcmahon22686 жыл бұрын
Its funny you should say that! I put through a quote request to hire a sr22t for 2 days but will only be flying for 4 hours. They have given me a minimum hire rate of $500 X 5 hours.
@JodelFlyer6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. i was just wondering. My Jodel does not have anywhere near the performance of the Cirrus but because it is mine I can fly it out to a local airshow for the day with a flight time of only 45 mins each way and I don't have to worry. (Taking into account the hangerage, insurance, maintenance and fuel my hourly rate last year on about 60 hours was in the region of £75/£80)
@StefanDrury6 жыл бұрын
Shop around if you're hiring over multiple days. I know various companies and aircraft that handle this differently. Where I hire the Cirrus, some aircraft don't incur additional fees for overnight. TDS for example, when I took that to Longreach over 7 days, I only paid when the engine was running.
@johnkacarab26616 жыл бұрын
I'd like to know how much it actually costs to fly.. Seems ot me to be very high, how do you afford the costs? Seems like it is beyond the average person.

Hey Stef. How come your wet rate for the SR20 is so much lower than that offered by Blue Demon ($305 vs $350)?
@StefanDrury6 жыл бұрын
My wet rate was calculated based on me purchasing my own fuel. I don't hire wet from BD so I can't comment but I'd suggest their wet rate is higher to cover fluctuating fuel prices and the labour component for refuelling for you. I'm happy to fuel it myself and return full (like a hire car) to get a lower hourly rate though.

That's how much more expensive it is to *fly*, but not necessarily how much more expensive it is to *rent*. If you're just flying around to fly or sightsee and then landing back at the rental site, those equations work. But if you're actually going somewhere to do something the plane is going to be on the ground for while, say overnight, and you have to pay the higher rate for that time, and for that time the plane is on the ground the plane's greater speed makes no difference.
@BretAllenStudios6 жыл бұрын

Hey mate, great vid as always. I've never really liked the aversion to maths in realistic scenarios like this - breaking costs down like this is a great way to see how much is actually being spent. It'd be really interesting to see a rental vs ownership mathematical justification with ownership costs factored into it, even though ownership is just a pipedream. BTW - super jealous of the cost of AVGAS at YMMB. Up at YMUR its $2.50/litre, though a little more reasonable at YBCG at around $2ish.

a faster airplane is almost never going to be cheaper because of simple physics (unless you're comparing an old brick of an airplane with something sleek and modern and even then only maybe). Power requirements (and thus fuel requirements) go up exponentially with speed so an airplane that's twice as fast will require 4 times as much energy.

Hello Stefan- I'm only 13 and I'm already looking at aircraft on Controller and Trade-A-Plane. I've always wanted an SR-22 (I found one on TAP for 175,000 USD), but the parachute repack just seems too much for me. I then wanted a Piper Arrow, but then I realized I'd need more training for the landing gears. Now I want a Cessna 182 or a Grumman AA5-Tiger, but that is 100% subject to change. What is your recommendation? What should I get? EDIT: If you want to talk to me more about this subject, please contact me on Instagram: @speedysaviation
@StefanDrury6 жыл бұрын
Hey Tweet Tweet, great to hear you're interested in aviation at 13 years old. My best advice for you right now, would honestly be to try and get some first hand experience in aviation before even thinking about purchasing an aircraft. Talk to your parents about maybe taking you to your local airport and go chat to some flying schools together. See if you can get some trial flights with a school and just get a feel for what it's like to fly small aircraft. In most countries you need to be 16 years before you can get a PPL/RPL and fly yourself anyway, so you have plenty of time. If you chat to some flying schools with your parents, maybe see if there are any weekend jobs they need help with like cleaning the planes or jobs around the hangar that you can help with. This gets you close to the aircraft, talking to other pilots, and also you could potentially earn some hours towards your flight training when you're older to help with those costs. I wish you all the very best with it, you sound like you love aviation already which is fantastic. But honestly I wouldn't worry about aircraft purchasing just yet. Focus on the flying and getting some experience, and the purchase side of things will follow. Good luck! Stef ✈️👍

Believe me, i am the world's worst mathematician but from what i can see in your calculations, the 22 is really not much more expensive to fly than the 20. Apart from that i suppose that some pilot's would find the 22 more satisfying/fun to fly, regardless of cost.

This is why only the wealthy can afford to fly an essentially incredibly boring aircraft. More than three times the hourly rate of much more engaging other aircraft (the list is endless) and added to that a horrible yoke/sidestick and a panel that looks like it came out of a 1970s land rover or similar. All that expensive technology cannot hide the fact that, though perhaps exaggerated, the safety record is not very impressive despite all the gizmos. To be fair the outside airframe looks aesthetically pleasant, but the inside is totally soulless.
