I think late SM and SWSH will last long, as its when the boom happened and many people will have nostalgia for this era since it brought so many new people in and old fans back. Scarlet and Violet sets will be the true test for if the current poke craze has legs or is fizzling.
@patrickbateman69420 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. For many kids the SWSH era is their 'Gen 1' - they're going to fondly remember all this era's cards the same way I fondly remember the Gen 3 games, or how people ~30+ remember Base Set. SM and SWSH will do exceptionally well long term. As for ScVi, it's a win-win for a sealed collector: People drop out of the hobby and print runs remain low because of decrease in demand? Great, there'll be less of it around in future. Interest stays strong and another new generation gets into it the same as SM and SWSH? Also great, the hobby is even stronger in future for selling sealed product to. This is a no lose scenario for the hobby.

It just feels like they took a massive step backwards to kiddy art. The thing thing is, my kids love the refined art from Crown Zenith (9 and 12), it's a good mix of mature styling while still retaining kid appeal, at least if my kids are anything to go off of.

I just recently started a sealed collection, and I agree it takes mental skill to not open it all. It all started when I bought an Espeon GX premium collection box, that I bought from my local Walmart in 2017 for $20. I wasn't into collecting Pokemon cards at the time, it was just because Espeon is one of my most favorite Pokemon. I opened it. Then years later I looked it up again out of curiosity when I became more interested in the hobby and seeing it going for $300+!! I wish I kept mine sealed!😆

I would have to respectfully disagree with your estimation in that anything prior to Sun and Moon will be starkly more valuable due to supply - because you feel everyone keeps modern sealed and the supply is higher and everyone's collections look the same. Modern has proven to have some of the BEST artworks EVER MADE in Pokemon's history. This is the reason why modern is so popular and prices / demand are extremely high. Pokemon has currently been unable to satiate - (even with more printing) - the current demand. This is why everything is so valuable - booster boxes, singles etc. Today, I would argue many collectors prefer modern over vintage because of the highly creative and beautiful / complex textures & colors they have offered and I feel that trend of enjoying the alternate arts \trainer gallery \galarian gallery will continue as new collectors of all ages enter the hobby. With that...as you mentioned, the hobby continues to grow. As such, kids will likely continue to enjoy the hobby as many are already involved while new kids will continue to enter. This kinda debunks your argument for everyone's collections look the same today and everyone has all the cards out there that are available. Well, NEW collectors won't have those cards because they are just starting out. Say tomorrow 2,000 collectors enter this hobby. I would imagine they are going to want to own alternate arts. Also, today - many kids are collecting and DON'T have the collection you or I may have because they can't yet afford it. Not everyone has the same cards as many are struggling to keep up with how many good cards have flooded the market with Sun and Moon and Sword and Shield. The thing to remember about supply of modern is that specific cards like those popular Alt arts are NOT plentiful. They are extremely rare. I would also argue that many are even more rarer than some of the cards out of the oldest sets. I believe there should not be a line in the sand between modern and vintage. New and old collectors will collect what they want and these behaviors are difficult to predict. I enjoy both modern and vintage offering and feel it's limiting to suggest that vintage will carry a little more value over modern. Kids growing up today are immersed in modern, not what you collected 20 years ago. Modern artworks are way more interesting in many cases and though perhaps more supply exists to a degree.. that's only because more collectors have entered the hobby and collecting sealed product is now a thing. Not everyone who collects sealed will open it. The future for investing in modern looks as bright as it does for vintage if not brighter on a card by card basis..

I think the biggest problem with modern sets holding value long term is the pull rates. You can open a wotc era box for example and have about 12 guaranteed holos so people will buy into breaks knowing there's a 1 in 3 chance of pulling one of the best cards. With sword and shield era boxes you can open an entire box and get literally nothing so I don't see people buying into breaks in the future for these sets when you dont have very good odds of getting a good card.

I collect because I enjoy the cards, but I’ll never get hundreds of dollars of value out of any card regardless of how rare it is. I feel like a lot of people conflate actual value with price. Prices that are driven up by investors and collectors trying to profit. My rule for my collection is that I should be happy with my purchase even if it becomes worthless some day.
@WillysWorld Жыл бұрын
I agree, but with certain sets, they might actually end up being more rare than some of the earlier WOTC/D&P/B&W etc. for instance let’s take Team up for example, only one limited wave and it was before the boom in 2019/2020 when demand was lower. Even though ppl love this set, This set is extremely overlooked and underrated for its rarity. Just take a quick look at what’s available on the market for ETB’s and BB’s, you literally can count it on your hands, because there just wasn’t much product to begin with. This was printed way less than base unlimited, jungle unlimited & fossil. Also huge cards in this set that compete price wise with some of the top cards from previous eras, like latias latios alt art, gengar & mim alt art etc. everyone talks about Evolving and moonbreon, but team up was printed way way less, and the top card Latias/latios alt art in a PSA 10 is more expensive than a PSA 10 Moonbreon by hundreds of dollars right now (most recent eBay sale is $1,225). This set was only printed once, never reprinted and never will be. This is a huge sleeper set and I would definitely take a strong position in this over ES personally for the longer term investment/collectibility

For me I don't like collecting sealed product I like collecting the card its self and opening the product, as for UPC collections or ETBs I open and use the packs and take the promos and then I'll use the Opened premium feeling box as display since it has a premium sturdy feel worth keeping same with tins, I open them but keep the left over tins as they still hold collector value and display value to some degree sometimes even used as storage. As with Many normal collection boxes I buy for the promo cards inside, and leave the box in good to decent conditon which I leave The promos and Jumbos In the box for display, and open the packs to Maybe pull a chase card or pokemon I like to add to my Binder, but at some point I may eventually pull those promos and sleeve them to add to my binder and maybe get a jumbo card binder or leave them in their original box for pure display as I have no where else to put them. And yes I like collecting Holo Rares, most people seem to throw those aside for whatever reason they still look cool especially paired with a cool art work.

I was becoming afraid that I was the only one who liked to collect rare Holos / Holo rares. I am so glad that someone else appreciates them as well! I always sleeve my rare Holos / Holo rares and treat them with the same level of respect as my other “hits”. My favourite pattern is the Cosmos pattern. After that would be the Holofoil pattern used for the Delta Species cards, although that makes me sound quite old. I thought that the Tinsel pattern (Black & White TCG Series rare Holo pattern) was fine. I unfortunately could never quite properly appreciate the Sheen pattern (XY TCG Series rare Holo pattern). Although I did not grow up with the Starlight pattern, I truly began to appreciate it after XY Evolutions (XY12). The Sun & Moon TCG rare Holo pattern I liked better than the Sheen pattern of the XY Series. And at first I was not fond of the Holo rare pattern of the Sword & Shield TCG Series, although I have now begun to like it. (The name was changed from “rare Holo” to “Holo rare” after SM12, correct?) As for promotional cards, I think that the Crosshatch pattern is cool, although I do not own any myself. I am not that fond of the Cracked Ice pattern. The Pixel pattern is fine. What is/are your favourite pattern/patterns? But yes, I completely agree with you that rare Holos / Holo rares are oft discarded. I wish that people would not forsake them so. It was great to know that there are other rare Holo / Holo rare enthusiasts! Thank you so much for your comment. Please have a pleasant day. (Sorry, I now begin to realise that the majority of the comment pertained to other topics, and that only the very last sentence related to rare Holos / Holo rares. I have a bad habit of fixating on an interest and typing with such excitement, and then editing it for forty-five minutes or so because I am afraid of judgement / social ostracisation. Please forgive me.)

I own a Axew Holo from McDonalds 2012 a friend gave me and a Metagross Holo rare from a 2009 Set i have that has a Crystal like Holo Pattern. As for Delta Species I have the Celebrations Gardevoir I bought the other day as a single along side a bunch of other Gardevor Mega EX Cards as I don't want to spend the money to open those packs as it's much more worth it to buy the straight up card I want from Sun and Moon or XY Era. I also like like other Holo patterns from EX Cards that are really old like early 2000s or Cards from like Neo Genesis with the sparkly stary type patterns, I also like current Radiant Card patterns despite them being textured patterns that display on the whole card and not just the image Like there's a Luigia Holo from way back when i wouldn't mind having. But I'm only a recent Card collector starting in Sword and Shield I used to not appreciate Pokémon when I was a kid and was never into it until now as my friend got me into it last year. As someone who started collecting right around 2 years ago (like most modern collectors, started during the pandemic peak), my view is that it's pointless to attempt to collect vintage stuff, especially in terms of sealed products, simply because those products have reached their peak of value. They are just super expensive and they will hardly become any more expensive in future. It is worth just "start over" and buy modern products for cheap and let them become vintage down the line. All of this assuming that the goal of starting a collection is to create some sort of "savings investment" to re-convert in cash after a few years, which is what I am essentially doing, and I think many do too. One day I will resell my stuff, and although I will be happy to get some money out of it, I will also be sad because I like my collection and it will be tough to separate from it.

This is like wartching a video from 2016. "Everyone is collecting now and newer sets won't be as valueable" is something everyone says. People tens to forget that people aren't as stubborn as they would like to be or that people sometimes have difficulties with their finances and therefore have to sell their collection

Pokemon collectors will only increase in numbers, but sports collectors/collections are going to take a hit at the same time, IMO. There has not only been a decline in viewership of sports, but there is a decline in participation as well. On the reverse side, Pokemon's popularity is increasing, and even sports collectors are getting their feet wet in the hobby. I wouldn't be surprised if over the long-term Pokemon didn't also overtake Magic. At some point, the price of cards for sports and Magic get so high, it prices out the vast majority of collectors. Pokemon is still much more accessible than both sports and Magic cards.

I think specifically around Tag Team will be the cutoff, I don't remember seeing too much 2017/2018 packs during covid though might just be me.

Modern is doing better than vintage. More people into that market and the returns on a lot of it is insane. Vintage has its own fan base and that’s good and modern you can spend $5 and hit a card with beautiful artwork and worth a couple hundred dollars. People will have nostalgia from the Covid modern era

So I went through the comic book and sports card hype as a kid in the 90s, with the illusion of that it will go up in value. Little did I know that they mass produced the crap out of those during those times. What I learned from that was I, personally, should only be collecting the stuff I like, and not purchase for only investment reasons. I just got into Pokemon cards recently to collect but with the focus on just only buying singles of the Pokemon that I want/like. I'll buy a pack or two randomly every now and again as well just for the thrill. If the value goes up in 20 years, I'm happy, if it doesn't I'm still happy.

I don't see the point in a sealed collection personally. I open everything I get because I'm in it for the cards, and I love my ETB collection, all opened, too. I do appreciate people that do this though! It's nice to be able to buy older stuff to open. 😊

Got all mine from child hood still 1998/99 I washed cars in the local village and brought a few packs traded my way to a health stack I used to swap phones and fishing gear for them from the carboot sales when I was younger. Crazy times 34 now 😂

I honestly prefer a future where prices aren’t insanely high and I can buy singles to complete my collection. Sealed items I feel will always gain value since people always love opening vintage/retro things. And Pokémon media is still really high in demand

Other than the nostalgia value of the base set stuff, I don’t personally know how the 4 gold cards in Crown Zenith could be topped art-wise… by far the most stunning cards ever made imo

The rule of thumb is, as soon as it’s not on the shelf at box retailers the price doubles.

Sealed product and charizards are pretty solid guaranteed. Most sets wont last unsealed

There are so many people in the space now, just because you are in the hardcore area of it and see many with sealed and chase cards. But there are tons of people who still need all these items, me included. I dont think we will see prices like the vintage sealed, but 3-5 times MSRP, I dont think thats a stretch by any means.
@Brandonhart100 Жыл бұрын
I think sealed product has a decent change of good growth through the years. People will pay for that nostalgia. However, I do remain a bit skeptical about cards that were printed to the moon. The Junk Wax era of Baseball taught me that in the early 90's when I was a kid. Everyone thought those cards would be valuable today and they're simply not.

To be fair baseball in general is falling off while Pokemon has a tendency to renew itself every generation

Nice video Jake. I think it's really important to enjoy and like what you collect. We don't know the future, but if you enjoy your collection that's all that matters. Cheers!

Same. We hand out Pokémon packs with candy at Halloween and the kids are always thrilled. Modern is still red hot. Our stores are always empty. A restock barely last a couple days. My lgs is also out of booster boxes.

While I agree with what you’re saying, and I’m guilty of the same, I think you might be overestimating 2 things. 1) the number of people that collect sealed product and, 2) the number of people that can keep sealed product. I’m in quite a few FB groups for Pokémon and MTG, and there’s a lot of people that will actually help our sealed collections grow in value. And that’s because they can’t hold sealed product, because they want to rip packs, more than they want sealed product. They just can’t stop themselves from opening it. So, the amount of sealed product out there is still going down.

I never really considered the value of my collection. If managed to aquire one of every NA standard release garchomp and Cynthia cards. Some of them costed pennies while other a "bit" more. I love them all the same. Who knows what they will be worth in 20 years.

We also have to consider the fact that once the pokemon company stopped printing SWSH era sets... This is when the sealed "stock" in the world will be finite for SWSH... As long as there are people wanting them, this finite "stock" will continue to diminish, thus increasing value... but of course, we are guessing if this massive amount of "stock" can satisfy the unknown demand of current fans enjoying breaking packs... And who knows whether this demand will go to new fans as well... These are the unknown factors that will determine its future value...

I'm sorry Jake... everybody does not have a sealed collection. Sealed product collecting is not what the average collector does. Maybe 30- 35% of people have sealed collections but it is nowhere near EVERYBODY like you claim. Just want to put in that little correction. Out of the circle of 20 people around me who collect... 1 of us has at least 1 sealed item. The other 19 of us don't even have 1 sealed item. That's 5% of the collectors I know as an example.
