Laura Mam captured audiences early on with her remakes of Khmer hits and her dramatic use of Khmer sounds and styles merged into Western styles of music. Her music has explored various forms of Cambodian music and she is best known for her unique guitar skills and heavy dance performances in Cambodia. Laura’s brand extends to her larger vision as the CEO leading a new brand of premium original artists. Her new album features many of her new artists and takes a dance pop approach to Khmer music, and what she believes to be an unstoppable music movement in Cambodia.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx"

This speech is beyond inspiring for all Cambodians who either live in the country or abroad. Cambodia had such an amazing golden era in the past and regardless of the struggles we may confront right now, we have to fight for what we believe. Original Music is a powerful movement. We are enormously grateful and thankful for Laura and her teams for what they have done to make Cambodia music back to life again.

Finally someone behind the scene came out and tell the story, so inspiring. I have been a big fan for original songs and actively and purposefully supported the movement and as I saw great change gonna happen, and it did. Look, it's only our generation who can push this nation forward for a better day as our living older generation can't stop verging conflicts and controversy, and planting destructive mindset all year long. We now have our own 21st century songs to listen, but I believe we'll soon change economic, social, and political agenda too. It's Generation Now!

Wow! Laura, I gotta you credit for this amazing TedTalk! I have found myself speechless. Born and raised in Cambodia and I have no awareness of the Original Music Movement a bit and by listening to you, I have learned to appreciate all these original songs even more. I have this realization that many today's Cambodians are taking a lot of things for granted and not realizing how important it is to preserve/restore what we have had in the past! You sure did a lot of research for this since you touched a lot of pure facts! Much respect for that. Also, thank you for this eye opening experience and I know to get to where you are now is not an easy journey. But one thing I can assure you right now is that your sweats and tears have always been appreciated and everything is paid off now. All Cambodians love you, your music, and what you have given us! Thanks for bringing back the Golden Era of Cambodian Music!

Before this speech I’ve never even realize that there is such a story that goes beyond what we see and I’ve always wondered why Khmer music is always the same. I mean I at least hear the same song 3 times sang by different singers. And I never imagine that original singers/artist are trying so hard to fight for the right to sing original, authentic music. This speech now make me wanna support original singers more and more. And like you said, every time we leave a comment, a share, a like even just simply watching the video is a way of supporting and helping and it’s like a way of encouragement that shows “there are people out there in this world that supports my work, no matter how little”. Thank you Laura Mam for this speech, it’s beautiful.

Dang... I gotta give Laura props she came a long way and her Khmer speaking abilities greatly improved. I guess the best way to learn is to live there and to surround yourself with Khmer speakers and then just consumes it everyday. I don’t know her but I’m really proud of this girl for going back to her roots and having so much pride of her background. She’s a great inspiration.

You inspire me, Laura, to connect with my heritage through music and to learn about our history with a different perspective. All I know about Cambodian and Southeast Asian history comes from my parents and community in learning about the sad narrative of broken-ness called diaspora and trauma. Music is the soul and spirit calling for creativity as well as happiness. I am also Cambodian-American, whose learning to direct my focus towards inter-generational healing over inter-generational trauma so that I can uplift myself along with my family and others. Thank you for this beautiful message! It is golden!

Great speech Laura, I use to your show of Your video, you are the best Canbodian American Artist no one else in Cambodia or abroad compare to you especiallyt today generation but it very sad in Cambodia is not the right time to do something we want, because Cambodia is not a country obtain peace or Independent yet. So we don't have real Domocracy like in the U.S.A and Canada neither, It's very risky there. Hope one these day Cambodia will have real Independant and everything will change to be peaceful country like way back 50 years ago. Love your speech, your Inspiration for Khmer people, always love your songs, your voice ect. I am really appreciate what you have done for our Khmer music Artist people. Actully I am one of musician too, I use to perform for 10 year in Canada but now I am retired but play sometime with friend just for fun. Laura Mam! I wish you all the best, God blesd you with a happy heart and happy life that's light with joy and cheer. Love from Khmer Canada always support your music and style. May i ask your forgiveness if my English isn't that good. Thanks you.

I have wondered the same question of why Kampuchea rarely release original music. My friend have asked me the same question and have even acted disgusted that Khmer singers and songwriters copy other artists. For a long time, I didn't have an answer but having watching your Ted Talk presentation today, I think Khmer people are still in survival mode. It's time consuming, it's stressful, it's highly financially risky to make original music so big music producers simply don't encourage it. Thank you for addressing this question. I am looking forward to the Avante-Garde period of Khmer music where we can create our own identity that we can be proud of. It's an exciting time!
