Fast forward 4 years: check out EL wire (electroluminescent wire) which only needs 3 volts (2 batteries), or try LED neon tubing (light-emitting diode) which only needs 12 volts (8 alkaline batteries or an auto battery). Stop dreaming about it amd make it, then upload your creation onto KZbin so we can see!

You can easily do that by taking a thin T5 fluorescent tube and just heat it on a gas stove just enough to make the glass soft to bent it. If you heat to much the vacuum inside the tube will squish the glass and seal off the arc passage ways. I have tried it, and it sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Mainly what happens is I introduce stresses in glass by heating it and it cracks on its own after a few hours. You better off just buying a simple glass tube, bending it int a shape on a gas stove and then finding someone who is skilled in making neon signs and other lamp related stuff and just giving him money to pump out your tube and seal in the cathodes. The rest you can do by yourself

you can make it using EL wire or electro-luminescent wire. It is safe to wear, is available in a bunch of colors and can be powered by a small battery pack that can fit in your pocket. It is easy to use and make into whatever you want. You would just sew it onto the costume to hold it in place. EL wire is flexible and it glows in a similar fashion to glass neon sign tubes.

The narration is wrong on several points such as mercury's function is not to brighten the tube. Its the ultraviolet UVC light at 253.7nm from ionized mercury vapour which the fluorescent phosphor coating inside the tube absorbs and re-radiates light in the visible spectrum. The processing, or pumping of the neon narration is incorrect as well. Its a heating process using high voltage to de-gas the glass and phosphors and at the end to heat the electrodes to 900C to convert the chemical emission coating on the inside of the shell which lowers the "resistance" of the final neon lamp. That's just two there's more...

They didn't mention the Bombardment where just a small amount of air is left in the tubing while pumping down. Then a larger current high voltage transformer than actually used in the sign is used to ionize the air and heat the electrodes to red heat (3:22-3:26). The tube is pumped down more to it's final vacuum to suck out moisture dirt etc from the tubing after it gets hot then the argon/mercury or neon is ladeled in. The tubing then gets "tipped off" and run to check color and brightness.

Colours??? OVER 300 and 30 are WHITE. WHY the cork??? Glass convects HEAT not conducts ...any variation of a straight line produces stress point .. the "Puff" restores continuity to relieve the stress...
