What ancient event would you add to the modern Olympics?
@Boardwoards3 ай бұрын
I would boycott them as moses (musaeus) did. difficult to wade through the associated lies but as egypt shared a major port known for being primarily dealing with greece that moses is said to have been around that would explain being the teacher of orpheus (which is also twisted to be backwards) it's all kinds of complicated in fact, refusing to bring his music (having spent much time learning to communicate feeling through music with a burned out tongue) is probably why music was ultimately dropped from the games.

Far from it. Actually, Nero was one of the great builders of history. Subsequent to the great fire of Rome he instituted the first meaningful building code regulations. He addressed firewalls, adequate space and wider streets, etc. Fire was endemic in ancient Rome and this was a huge step forward. Criticism of His Domus Aurea a.k.a. Golden House come from subsequent hostile historians. In actuality, this was a completely innovative architectural accomplishment. J.B. Ward-Perkins (a noted architectural historian) states: “It is hardly an exaggeration to say that the whole subsequent history of European architectural thought hangs upon this historic event.”

Another great video ♥️. possible suggestion for a video, we hear a lot about how Caesar was very popular, and from reading on my own and watching other KZbin videos, I know approximately what he did to gain so much favor with the common people, but I would love to see this channel 's take on it! you guys always provide a very refreshing point of view on subjects that seem to have been run into the ground by wider pop history creators
@tribunateSPQR3 ай бұрын
Thanks! In my opinion Caesar is the central figure of Roman history (as well as the most interesting) so when we started We had a ton of Caesar content but drifted away since we didn't want to just be the Caesar channel. But after a bit away I want to go back to him soon and this would be a great place to start. thanks for the recommendation and the support.

Yup, that was insane. I didn't see Phelps being all nice-nice, giving up his gold medal and taking silver, I guess his ego clouded his view of gentlemanliness.

Controlling 4 horses on a chariot takes a lot of skill and practice. It wouldn't have taken much self reflection for Nero to realize how silly that was.

There is a section in Herodotus' Histories called "Trial of the Athletes" where some ancient Olympic athletes were condemned for cheating in the Olympic Games - the theme was picked up by Italian dramatists and opera composers in the 18th century when an estimated 50 different composers nearly all Italian wrote operas on this theme. The most noteworthy composer here was Pergolesi but composers like Vivaldi, Galuppi and Cimarosa also wrote their versions of the story where the prize is not a medal but the hand of a beautiful maiden -one of the athletes swaps identity with a friend so he can win this coveted prize but the deceit is discovered at the end. The Vivaldi version of this story was performed in Paris recently in conjunction with the Olympic Games there.

History is said hardly repeats itself as much as it rhymes from one epic line to the next in expression of events. Neither repeated nor rhyme might it do, but history holds before us a figurative mirror into which we can view.

Another excellent and thought-provoking video! While it's easy to condemn the wanton debauchery of Nero and his ilk, a more sympathetic look can show them for what they were - victims of circumstance, born at the top of a horrendously unequal civilisation and brainwashed into believing their domination was natural and divine. A tragic situation for all involved. (He definitely deserves all the blame for that neckbeard though.)

As a Brazilian, I am not even nationalistic but I watched the maraton live and it was a sham that he lost the gold. The Brazilian runner was nearly over and with a good advantage, he was attacked due to a lack of security from the organizers, injured and had to start from behind the runners passing him while the whole ordeal was being resolved and he was treated. Even as a joke I think it's wrong to compare it to Nero.

It is frustrating but also endlessly fascinating that we will never know just how bad (if even at all in the grand scheme) Nero was. Propaganda after the fact, an historical record that is less than complete, plus the general fog of history, means we will never truly have a definitive answer. Always fun to speculate though. I doubt he was much worse than any other ruler around his time, but a good story is a good story, and propaganda tends to do well in any time period.
