just gotta liek try not to or just look at the situation and be greatful, as things likely could’ve gone mich worse. Sometimes that works, but often not. But, try to make the most of stuff. Not everything is gonna be horrible.

I used to be angry all the time, but then I hit rock bottom, and there I somehow came up with the idea to just be happy that I am alive and experiencing this life. So far a few months later it’s still working I try to remind myself to be happy to be alive whenever times are hard.

It's probably good to notice when you're feeling unhappy in case there is something positive you can do to fix the situation. However, sometimes it's just a matter of enduring a tough situation. You can still make yourself a promise that if you discover a practical solution to your problems, then you will explore it.

No, it's about expectations rather than hope. Do you see the subtle difference? If you expect something, you will be angry when you are let down. Hope shouldn't make you angry in case of fail. The true hope, at the very least. Luke Skywalker (the new hope) wouldn't make people angry if he failed, he would make them more sad (and death, in consequence... heheh)

This reminds me of a sermon I heard years ago and to some extent what a therapist said years before that. The therapist said, have no expectations and you will stop being disappointed. That made me furious, but he's right. The sermon was you decide ahead of time. You can decide ahead of time that there will be traffic on your way to and from work because there always is. You can either keep getting angry about it, which does no good, or you can decide there will be traffic, and while I'm sitting there, I can listen to an audiobook or something else that edifies my mind.

Pessimism is the cure for anger and optimism for depression. You need both in balance to see life for what it really is and be happy with it.
@FarewellApollo
@FarewellApollo 7 жыл бұрын
couldn't agree more! Both are necessary to maintain a healthy mindset. When faced depression, my thoughts were "nothing will ever go my way and I shouldn't have any goals because they won't be fulfilled." After getting out of that mindset and seeing things for what they really are, I've realized how good of a thing hope and optimism can be when used in moderation. We need to use optimism when looking at our goals, otherwise we will never achieve anything and never find out what we could have done because pessimism tells us "it isn't gonna happen, so just give up" which is a very unhealthy way to live.

Gr8 Incarnate but there are small examples in everyday life where optimism can be very useful and get you that initial motivation to actually try and attempt to make things better for yourself. Optimism is a big part of motivation. An example would be when you want to ask someone out on a date. Pessimism would tell you "they're not gonna like you. What's the point in trying? They're gonna say no." So you would never actually find out for sure what they would have said. It takes a bit of optimism and thinking "maybe they'll say yes!" to get the courage to take chances. And even if they say no, you could at least say you tried and not have to live with not knowing what they would have said.
@FarewellApollo
@FarewellApollo 7 жыл бұрын
Gr8 Incarnate You're right, that is a possibility as well. Asking someone out means that you put yourself in a vulnerable position to the possibility of getting hurt via rejection. There is always a risk with that sort of thing. As with anything in life, one can become resentful towards something that has hurt and scarred them before in the past. It's really up to the individual to let something like that effect their choices or not. One must ask themselves if the risk is worth the reward. The last part of your comment rings very true. The optimistic viewpoint is a tool to be used, but not alone. Diversity is very important, and this is no exception. Optimism is one of many tools at one's disposal to build their life on. It is really up to the individual to decide what they want to use and when and where they want to use it.

This is so true. In my 19 years of living things have never turned out the way I expect them to. No day is the same and every encounter is different. To be hopeful here doesn’t mean optimistic it means putting faith in a world that is constantly proving you wrong and it shows you it will never live up to your expectations of it. And yet you still somehow don’t accept this reality and make the lives of people around you harder than they need to be. But an addition: Don’t be pessimistic, be realistic and patient. Always

Or you do some research on ayahuasca (plant medicine) and work with our psychological issues, by going through our emotional and mental fields. And do the clearing work of the distortion energy in the emotional field, calling these energy patterns to be resolved and dissolved, as well as working with the mental field, aka the mind-field, from a similar idea of both fields having energies built into them by our interaction with our reality as well as other humans :)

I agree with this video and I think a lot of people misunderstood this because this actually failed to acknowledge the philosophy which stems it- Stoicism. As an average person who practices stoicism in my daily life, I understood the message. It's not about *expecting the worst*, it's about accepting that it isn't possible to have everything under our control which means that there are simply some things that won't go the way we want it to be all the time BUT instead of trying to control those things that are beyond our control, we should focus instead of how we approach and react to these unexpected, inevitable, unfortunate scenarios that will sure come our way. This video only covered the part where we should be a bit realistic about the limits of our control and how the world works and I wished they also provided the optimistic part and the practical respond to these unfortunate events.

@Tormentality
@Tormentality 7 жыл бұрын
UnpredictableSB I don't know. To be an existentialist, doesn't one need to accept the absurd and then create a superficial reason for being? I am probably way off since I don't know the precise philosophical definitions of these terms. I was just reading wiki's definition of existentialism... I am not sure the difference between nihilism and existentialism, so this is interesting: Although nihilism and existentialism are distinct philosophies, they are often confused with one another. A primary cause of confusion is that Friedrich Nietzsche is an important philosopher in both fields, but also the existentialist insistence on the inherent meaninglessness of the world. Existentialist philosophers often stress the importance of Angst as signifying the absolute lack of any objective ground for action, a move that is often reduced to a moral or an existential nihilism. A pervasive theme in the works of existentialist philosophy, however, is to persist through encounters with the absurd, as seen in Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus ("One must imagine Sisyphus happy"),[40] and it is only very rarely that existentialist philosophers dismiss morality or one's self-created meaning: Kierkegaard regained a sort of morality in the religious (although he wouldn't himself agree that it was ethical; the religious suspends the ethical), and Sartre's final words in Being and Nothingness are "All these questions, which refer us to a pure and not an accessory (or impure) reflection, can find their reply only on the ethical plane. We shall devote to them a future work."

All this video is trying to highlight is to not have your head in the clouds and ground yourself on this imperfect Earth. As soon as this angry person sees that life isn't so perfect, he isn't becoming dead inside or sad, he is simply seeing things as they are without any emotional attachment or judgement on how they "should" be or how he "wants" them to be. Ultimately through this seemingly "pessimistic" choice of thinking, he finds inner happiness.

I strongly disagree with the last sentence: "pessimism is the cure for anger". Its rather: havong no expectations is the cure for anger and there is a great different between no expectations and always expecting the worst case scenario

@isabellabihy8631 5 жыл бұрын
I highly agree. Not having an expectation on an outcome means you're settling with the results you are getting. The video isn't quite exacting in the language. But then language is prone not to be exact. Nonetheless, I find the idea interesting that failed expectations (it will work out) are the cause of anger. Avoiding anger could mean communicating your expectations beforehand which might help to put them in perspective. Did you know: For pessimists and disaster thinkers black is a bright color. :-)

This was a very interesting perspective - I agree that in order to manage anger we need to adjust our expectations. Part of how I do this is to check my "self-talk" for blaming or negative statements because those are usually the culprit :) Anger can be controlled when you have the willingness to learn how to change it. That takes real courage but we also have to not punish ourselves for the struggle. Anger is a tough emotion to manage especially when you grow up with raging or abusive parents. We are not at fault for our anger - but we are responsible for it's impact on others. I hope this helps :)

I have lived with many angry people and I think it's most a lack of fear than a lack of sadness. They are reckless, neglectful, and when things went wrong as everyone could have predicted except themself, instead of learning from their mistakes they feel like life is unfair because of course nothing is ever their fault ... Anger is the sword, fear is the shield.

Yes pessimism can work. A lot of people also become cynical as a replacement for anger. The reality is, there's a better way: manage your expectations. Not really pessimism. Optimism with a sense of pollyanna, looking at cup half full, without the cup half full... More like the cup is 10% full and you're happy with that. Used to be riddled with anger. Then I became cynically skeptical, bitter, pessimistic, still angry. Years later now I'm an low-expectation optimist with an aggressive drive but now calm and healthily skeptical without cynicism. Always with a sense of acceptance and thinking of everything through the lens of evolution: "well this is how it turned out, because this is what survived."

If this doesn't paste properly, please look up "A Shropshire Lad" :-) A. E. Housman (1859-1936). A Shropshire Lad. 1896. LXII. Terence, this is stupid stuff ‘TERENCE, this is stupid stuff: You eat your victuals fast enough; There can’t be much amiss, ’tis clear, To see the rate you drink your beer. But oh, good Lord, the verse you make, 5 It gives a chap the belly-ache. The cow, the old cow, she is dead; It sleeps well, the horned head: We poor lads, ’tis our turn now To hear such tunes as killed the cow. 10 Pretty friendship ’tis to rhyme Your friends to death before their time Moping melancholy mad: Come, pipe a tune to dance to, lad.’ Why, if ’tis dancing you would be, 15 There’s brisker pipes than poetry. Say, for what were hop-yards meant, Or why was Burton built on Trent? Oh many a peer of England brews Livelier liquor than the Muse, 20 And malt does more than Milton can To justify God’s ways to man. Ale, man, ale’s the stuff to drink For fellows whom it hurts to think: Look into the pewter pot 25 To see the world as the world’s not. And faith, ’tis pleasant till ’tis past: The mischief is that ’twill not last. Oh I have been to Ludlow fair And left my necktie God knows where, 30 And carried half way home, or near, Pints and quarts of Ludlow beer: Then the world seemed none so bad, And I myself a sterling lad; And down in lovely muck I’ve lain, 35 Happy till I woke again. Then I saw the morning sky: Heigho, the tale was all a lie; The world, it was the old world yet, I was I, my things were wet, 40 And nothing now remained to do But begin the game anew. Therefore, since the world has still Much good, but much less good than ill, And while the sun and moon endure 45 Luck’s a chance, but trouble’s sure, I’d face it as a wise man would, And train for ill and not for good. ’Tis true, the stuff I bring for sale Is not so brisk a brew as ale: 50 Out of a stem that scored the hand I wrung it in a weary land. But take it: if the smack is sour, The better for the embittered hour; It should do good to heart and head 55 When your soul is in my soul’s stead; And I will friend you, if I may, In the dark and cloudy day. There was a king reigned in the East: There, when kings will sit to feast, 60 They get their fill before they think With poisoned meat and poisoned drink. He gathered all that springs to birth From the many-venomed earth; First a little, thence to more, 65 He sampled all her killing store; And easy, smiling, seasoned sound, Sate the king when healths went round. They put arsenic in his meat And stared aghast to watch him eat; 70 They poured strychnine in his cup And shook to see him drink it up: They shook, they stared as white’s their shirt: Them it was their poison hurt. -I tell the tale that I heard told. 75 Mithridates, he died old.

Why am I angry? That is very simple: I had dreams and they were crushed, I'm unemployed, I'm loser, I'm full of myself because I can't stand admitting the fact that I'm a failure. I used to be so caring and patient, Now I'm a mess, I sleep most of the time, I'v lost the ability to care about anything or anyone, I have existential crisis almost all the time. I read quite a few of the comments on this video. It's normal that you find the video frustrating, funny or simply disagree with it. The reason is because it does not go deep enough to explain how and why being "pessimistic" can help you being less angry. So almost everyone will miss the point. The point lies in deep philosophical theory and practice. In Stoicism (ancient Greek philosophy about resilience and self-control) the practice of "controlled meditation of evil" (Premeditatio Malorum) is fundamental. In very simple terms it means to meditate on bad things that could happen to you or the life around you with the purpose of preparing your mind about how it will respond. Therefore, growing more mentally prepared and resilient. For example if you are heading to the airport, imagine that your flight will be delayed or cancelled. How would you respond? What are the options that you should go through? Maybe asking for an alternative flight, or getting the train to go to your destination. In a safe and controlled state, you can evaluate your options. Then if the worst actually does happen, you are more prepared to face it and be rational instead of getting angry and yelling at the airport staff. There are many resources online to read about this practice and Stoicism in general. I recommend to anyone who does not agree with this video, to spend some time going through this Stoic practice. Then, the point of this video, will become clear and understandable.

@Gimpactx
@Gimpactx 7 жыл бұрын
ObiJuanKenobi3 I would disagree even though realism is the most rational; the topic is dealing with an emotion/reaction. Specifically, I believe this addresses the deep optimistic idealism rooted behind the anger which in a practical way is effectively lessened with the counter to that optimism: pessimism(cynicism may be a better word). I personally understand the analysis, though I believe nihilism is an even better cure to anger, though a root for depression. But if you are able to go one step further(one step back) and accept the relativity in the world, along with the irony and dissonance, I believe that that is the next step in cognitive evolution. Perhaps one day we will even come to understand the works of the universe, but for now, the term 'realism' is probably more ambiguous than optimism or pessimism, simply because of our cognitive limitations and lack of knowledge as individuals. Of course, "true" nihilism remains in theory yet not in practice, and the point of the video I believe was not to give you a pragmatic way of solving anger, but an idealistic approach to the problem. In turn, your perspective on life can change how you are, but not what you are completely.
@FelipeKana1
@FelipeKana1 7 жыл бұрын
Siwar Rivers I agree with you. However, I think you mixed stuff on: "I believe was not to give you a pragmatic way of solving anger, but an idealistic approach to the problem" I think the video does gives a pragmatic approach, (expect the worse, so you can be thankful for the best when it comes and not surprised and angry when the worst comes: pessimism) and the "realism" proposal is more of a idealistic approach. Also important, but belonging to another level.

Honestly, I can say this applies to me very well: I am very hopeful of people and most things. "Can't people just help this homeless person?!" "Why do so many people litter?!" "Why is this person cutting in line?!" These are just examples of expectations that are not met. However, I think what this video does not include is that people angry all the time (like me) are really people with unmet 'life' hopes. It's easy to get over small things when the 'big' things are working out. If some of your life's hopes are met, you have a peace that can gloss over the little stuff. Though when the 'big' hopes are not met, the 'small' hopes seem bigger and a lot more unbearable. The advice I'm trying to follow for myself is: continue to work on achieving your 'big' hopes, resolve what you need to in order to be at peace with the way things are. That is the solution.

Kevin with hair I find it hilarious how you even came to that conclusion. Who am I kidding? You're probably a mouth-breathing neckbeard that's never talked to a girl based on that sentence alone.

It's sad, but you won't find someone who will fulfill all of your expectations. It's not about lowering the expectations, it's accepting that everyone is imperfect and everyone can make mistakes at any moment, even you.

Then you'll always be in for disappointment, rigging yourself for terrible relationships and it's why people are having shallow and superficial relationships that actually mean nothing..

Anger and discomfort drives innovation. If you were to accept things as the shit hole of disappointment they are, then they will stay that way.

No. I can't seem to control my anger. When I feel that way I just try not to be around people. I stay at home, I don't awnser the phone, I **try** not to go online etc. When I'm depressed I do the same thing. People think I'm anti social...I'm not. I just can't be aroud people because I either come across as nasty or overly negative 🙁

Gina I also find it easier to excuse myself from a situation rather than hurting someone else. Well good luck to us and our battle with our issues.

Jen Ye late reply, because you hope for things to go well, so when they don't go well, you get angry. If you think things will go wrong, when it happens, yoiu won't feel as angry.

It's the same as "the key to happiness is realistic expectations". If you accept and embrace that reality never lives up to expectations, you won't feel let down so often.
