Wait, so the barista got turned into a weed demon, they defeat her, then they just kill her and dismember her body like its nothing??? It would've been so much more interesting if they had to drag her unconscious body around the city searching for a very specific thing to turn her back to normal, then once she was back to normal she could be the third memeber of the gang or something. Though I don't like the toilet humor, since they seem to love shock for shock's sake, something funnier and more consistent would probably be their having to take her unconscious body and stuff it up the cat's asshole. Then, the barista wakes up, alive and back to normal, then they realize she has to literally get her head out of a cat's ass and is permanently traumatized off the path of evil and will ensure that she becomes an obedient, law-abiding member of society because *she never wants to be shoved or come out of a cat's asshole ever again.* Continuing the previous joke, showing off the incredible amounts of power our deity has when in her space, AND it makes fun of supervillains being "reformed" at the end of the fight, where instead of empathy, we have cruel and unusual punishment and trauma.

As a parody of magical girl shows, it's very dated in it's jokes of the genre. It's like if someone made a joke about Voltron or fucking Speed Racer, and the joke was basically ''lol, the pilots smoke weed and talk about college debt, ain't that relatable and not like the cartoons you grew up with?''. Like, yeah, this certainly feels it was written by a 40 something year old dude or lady who hasn't mentally grown up and thinks making rejected Rick and Morty humors will give their show a personality.

You really hit it right on the head. Most adult shows and video games seem to think that you need to have constant cusing, lewd or nudity, gore and millennial humor to be good when it just boils down to how well the show or game's story is. An example of a good mature rated video game in my opinion is Borderlands 2 since it knows how to balance all of these aspects while also having an awesome story. And I was so disappointed when Borderlands 3 literally followed the adult rating checklist down to a t while having the most mediocre story and villains.

They had so much potential it hurts me, like even if they did kept the same villain, they could have saved the twins being good villains by making few changes on their actions and motivations then the childish route that Gearbox chose. They could have made the brother the backstabbing rat bastard by killing off the sister for more power while the sister actually did care for the psychos that praises them as their god, like imagine seeing Tyreen getting more pissed off at us for keep killing her generals throughout the story line while you see bits and hints of Troy being jealous of Tyreen having all of the powers that he have to rely on and near the end we see him killing Tyreen at her most weakened state and takes her power.

Helluva Boss has a lot of swearing and s3xual humor (even though it's only like 1/5 of the jokes in the entire show so far or less, yes I calculated it don't ask why) but it also has a lot of good character writing. I do think some of the jokes will be dated in a while but I think it might still hold up as a whole.

The problem I have with “parody” shows like this one are that they have no respect for the thing they’re parodying. You can tell they took the basic concept and maybe a couple references but they have no understanding of what makes the genre so loved in the first place. That’s why panty and stocking is great. It’s still a parody, yes, but it knows the magical girl genre enough to do it well. This is probably more subjective and a personal opinion but i think it’s way more enjoyable for a parody to act as a semi criticism, then both fans of the genre and people who have problems with the genre can both get something out of it. Or at least do something new/fun like p&s.

Exactly! I didn't grow up watching magical girls animes, but cartoons inspired by them, like Winx Club. I remember the transformation scenes have always been my favourite part and P&S goes all out with it, making the transformation scene remain my favourite even in this show. It looks like half of the budget went into it, the clothing designs gorgeous. It has the "adult parody" twist in that they are pole dancing and sometimes they include jokes like when they were transformers or when they forgot what they had to say. But it still honours the genere with a great transformation scene. And that's just one example.

A show that does a really good parody of magical girl animes is Cute High Earth Defense Club Love. They find so many ways to point out weird tropes in magical girl animes just by changing the girls for guys. It also does of good job of balancing poking fun at the genre without coming off as cynical. It’s just a good show all around if you ask me that any fan of magical girls should watch.

Honestly? As a writer and an avid enjoyed of media, it's an interesting and entertaining intellectual deep dive in how a story should be, by studying how something utterly fails in the process. I took on the lessons of "internal logic consistency," "humor consistency" with not using shock for shock's sake unless the entire series is for that, and not trying to parody an established series only on the most superficial level, like with the Kill la Kill symbolism and text obviously going WAY over their head. I think a better joke that rags on Kill la Kill would be one character complaining that their costume is just too damn conservative. "Who do you expect me to be, Modest Magical Girl Mormonella? Fuck no, bitch, I show skin!" And then, we might discover that the dress can't be destroyed with their own weapons, so we might have some sort of stupid sequence where they get attacked, one of them tries to dodge, until they realize that a monster's attack is capable of shredding the armor permanently. So, there might be some comedic lampshading of unnecessary fanservice during serious, violent scenes, where our characters are intentionally aiming to get ripped up and torn apart until their costumes are suitably skimpy to their liking. Then, we pan out to the sheer amount of destruction and chaos their selfishness has caused.

This show is an excellent example of what's wrong with modern most "Adult " cartoons, the writers seem to think putting in a heavy amount of cussing, nudity, gore and gross out will sell it, when in reality they come off far more juvenile than those aimed at kids. Take Ren & Stimpy the 90s series was far more subtle and balanced with its humor, unlike the adult cartoon party which tried way too hard and just came off more disgusting then funny. I also agree that fails so hard as a parody, I get it Sailor Moon is a famous magical girl show, But there's so many other shows like precure, madoka magica or even Winx club. But so many other shows have used SM references so much it's just not funny anymore.

1.) This show dates itself badly. They might've well just plastered the date everywhere. Like p&s had references, but they weren't vital to understanding what the characters are doing. Imagine being in 2050 and explaining what a "dab" is to your grandkids who watched this... a pop culture thing that died shortly after this show aired. 2.) P&s were tolerable because they had interesting personalities, they were charismatic and had personalities other than "haha, older gen z/younger millennials are so relatable!" Also, it's weird how the mcs of this show teeter on their moral. They say they don't care about people dying then they suddenly care when the coffee shop people are dying. And before you say "but they only care when something is actually happening infront of them." Yet they don't care when they watched that person get robbed? The kill la kill reference makes me sad. The nudity in KlK is a comment on women's sexualization in anime, people getting flustered with ridiculous outfits and coming to terms with their appearance and sexuality literally gives them power. It teaches that nudity isn't inherently sexual and that people shouldn't be embarrassed of what they are.

I do not think this is even gen z humour. Gen Z humour is largely illogical and random because it relies on deconstruction and no longer on being relatable. And to deconstruct something, you have to already know all the factors that made it work in the first place. What this animation strongly resembles is literally corporate memes. It takes a meme without understanding the format and shoves it together with issues gen z kids may relate to and it falls flat because the context and time is wrong. A small expansion (??) on the Kill La Kill reference in the show: In the anime, Ryuuko's initial embarrassment about wearing senketsu was important as she couldn't obtain her full power without coming to terms with her clothing. The whole message behind senketsu's design is to have pride in what you're wearing and when she does so, she gains control of her sailor uniform and wins the battle against the fighting club's leader (I think that's who was being fought). This show instead only harping on the skimpy nature of the outfits misses the entire point of the part of the original that they are referencing. I'm not really bothered by references, but I get peeved when shows who reference others don't understand WHY the original worked and shoehorn it in without (barely) any in-depth analysis.

PSG was created by a group of talented artists who live and breathe animation, and it shows in the visuals. It's got appealing character designs, crazy action scenes every other episode, and an instantly recognizable art style. Like, the show was literally conceived as a drunken 3AM shitpost, but then they put every ounce of their creativity and talent into it. You can tell that everyone involved was having fun. Also, Panty and Stocking are likeable characters! Don't get me wrong, they're extremely selfish and dumb people, but they're allowed to express other personality traits. They argue, and annoy each other a lot, but they will also back each other up when they need to. They don't just pointlessly act like dicks all the time. Sometimes they're actually nice and it isn't a joke. I think a lot of western adult cartoons fall into a trap where they want to make a "likeable jerk" character but they just end up feeling cynical and bitter. Like they were written by a bitter person who didn't really have anything to say, they just wanted to be mean. PSG can get pretty crass but I don't think that show ever feels mean.

Bee from Bee and Puppycat is already the depressed millennial American magical girl who initially does magical girl stuff for money to pay rent. Her adventures mirror her part time jobs that she can never hold down and at times she gets lost in having fun in these zany worlds as escapism from her regular life where she struggles and doesn't feel like she has purpose. Plus this show immediately establishes it has lore and an extended cast and realized world and clearly has a lot of understanding and love for the genre it's parodying (plus other anime outside of the magical girl genre.) This show is just "what if magical girls but also including the worst parts of western adult animation". So. Idk I guess that's new.

Haven't watched the show yet, but from the clipplets I watched in your review, I have come the conclusion that western artstyle and anime parody just do not mix. The thick vectorized outlines just seem too rigid, meanwhile the appeal of magical girls and other similar genres is that they the animation can be ridiculously dynamic. This artstyle might work for comedy shows where the characters only have to deliver lines of jokes, but for action... eh. I'm sure this combination can definitely work with some dedication, that of which the producers definitely did not have. But the artstyle isn't the only problem. The art direction seems really lacking, this is especially prevalent during the transformation scene. It just looks like they are changing clothes on top of a green screen??? There is literally no substance. In Madoka Magica, the characters literally dance and it's the most gorgeously dynamic transformation ever, and this series just pale in comparison. The character design also adds to the disappointment. You know the transformation is garbage when they change from slightly interesting clothes to generic ass drama costumes. They might as well be buck ass naked and that would unironically be more unique than the "magical girl" costumes. I know this show is only parodying the genre, however, I think it's only right that they do the genre justice. PS: I hope you watch Madoka Magica if you havem't already. The art direction is drop dead gorgeous and theme it covers is quite mature. The best thing about it is that despite being a parody, it still respects the genre of maical girls unlike a certain Western show....

Basically, Just watch panty & stocking. The jokes don't really try to be too pop culture centric like this and while they cuss to an extreame amount. It's not like the show hides what it is, an immature, sexualized parody of magical girls thats not afraid to be dark or crack jokes most shows wouldn't touch with a 10 ft pole. and it somehow works magically. The fact their names and weapons are based off clothing items, specifically clothes that are sexualized and fetishized is pure genius. This show? The outfits and weapons are so uninspired and lifeless it feels like something I'd come up with high. Like spooksi said, panty and stocking works because they don't fight ghosts to save people, it is purely for monetary gain just so they can go home. They also make the demon sisters, aka their rivals an interesting pair that not only are hilarious but also some how the morally just ones. Well besides the incest implied knee socks and scanty have almost a high and mighty mentality, Not to mention they're combacks and stabs at the angels is clever. You just can't top Panty and stocking with garter belt's energy and magic, not with this low effort pandering anyway.

Another good example of a well-written "jerk" character is Saiki Kusuo from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. He's a guy with endless powers that could change the way humans function (???)...and only uses it for his own benefit. Literally saving the world multiple times because his existence was on the brink. But over the series and the unique cast that he interacts with, he realizes he cares for them and enjoys playing with their shenanigans. He's more indifferent rather than an ass but his writing definitely tops whatever these guys got going on.

I just want to briefly say that the name "Nut" is actually pronounced "Noot" (Yes, make your jokes), who is the Ancient Egyptian Goddess of the Sky. I'm not criticizing you for referring to the Red Panda as "Nut", I'm criticizing the show. Anyway, I'd like to mention that while Panty and Stocking are jerk characters, they're not completely heartless and do clearly have morals, like they always protect humans when possible. And let's not forget the episode where Stocking falls in love with an awful ghost; Panty tries to split the two up, partially to protect her sister, and when he passes on, you can tell she's sympathetic towards her sister and really feels bad for her. I also feel like the sexualized clothing gag is supposed to be a jab at anime as a whole because people are always quick to assume all anime is about girls in skimpy clothing, disregarding the fact that anime has their own genre; ecchi, horror, fantasy, comedy, slice-of-life, etc. And unless I'm mistaken, the Magical Girl genre is typically one of the more wholesome genres with little in terms of skimpy clothes. I'm also surprised you didn't talk about how Nut gave the girls powers solely because they made Jon Wick references and thought they were destined heroes. I also remember seeing an image from the show that had 3 nerdy guys and each of them had a shirt relating to "nerd culture"; one referencing anime, one referencing the internet, and another referencing video games. It was just that image, but I think we all know what character those three guys have. And for some odd reason, I like Nut's design. Maybe it's the tired eyes on a red panda, I dunno. Her design is the one thing I like about the show.

I get the “anime mocking skimpy things” joke it was going for, but to use an example where they carried it out exactly like Kill la Kill with no changes just seemed a bit lazy to me. Parodies should be able to take themselves seriously and the Panty&Stocking (With Garterbelt) sequence showed is the perfect example Instead of doing the half assed, already done to death botched transformation sequence the animation changes, they look gorgeous, the music hits like a truck and it's all so smooth you almost forget they're using underwear as weapons. They went balls to the wall and made a kickass moment while still being a parody Good parody shows are made from the perspective of a fan of the genre, because it's fans who know most about it

Another actually good parody of magical girls is Binan Kokou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love! Or Cute High Earth Defense Club Love! Its like a magical girl show, but with all high school boys who aren't super into the idea of fighting goofy monsters, but always get the job done one way or another. The friendships between the characters are great and all feel genuine, like they're all just guys who hang out together. It's affectionate too-- it leans way into popular magical girl tropes like the transformation sequence while still poking fun at the absurdity of it all. It's both funny and heartwarming, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a parody of magical girls that isn't mean-spirited and shallow like Friendship Squad.

It’s not a deep show and not all the jokes land but I thought it was entertaining and some of the character and creature designs were delightful. Ok something interesting while watching this is two things. First, that opening shot to the show? I've seen not only the working files for the Adobe After Effects composite but also the Animate files because one of my professors (I'm an animation student) worked on compositing for the show. She had used them as an example of file setup so its kinda funny to see the actual clip again. And secondly because of having 2 other professors who also worked on it as background artists/animators, I know a bit of the production background. The show from what I gather was a bit of a mess behind the scenes, the network didn't really advertise or want the show from the start so they had bad deadlines and also an awful budget, I think they even had issues where the team nearly didn't get paid properly for the final few episodes because of that. So you not only have a show that suffers from awful writing, but also one where the team actually animating it isn't given the proper time or funds to even be able to make the thing look decent. And the professors I had who worked on it were all fantastic artists, they just got delt a bad hand.

I think I remember seeing the ad for this and just.. Literally forgetting it exists. Which seems to be no great loss. Tbh, I'm not a fan of modern western animation and I'm rather frustrated by the fact that it seems like the vast majority of Cgi goes into movies because when it has been used for kids shows, we sometimes get gems like Transformers prime where the detail in the the characters are amazing. That aside, I feel like in hand drawn animation has degraded into what's fast and easy instead of what looks good and tells the story with excellent visuals without looking lazy. I'm not saying you can't do heavily shape driven characters, but that seems to be the vast majority of what's out there with not much of a distinct style. I think sadly western cartoons are wanting to be like anime but without the honest effort that goes into making it worth the viewers time. And my advice is: you can probably expect more senseless violence with like with how they killed the monster girl in that show. I've watched a review of a DC comic, poison ivy, where the characters literally kill and bury the dad and it's no big deal. There's no actual emotional reaction just "oh we just killed him." Next! It's only a matter of time til we start seeing more like that with no sort of moral or proper handling of it, it just gets treated like a joke instead of in the right light of doing something horrible because there wasn't a better option in the situation.

Tbh if they were looking for a reason as to why the girls actually wanted to save people without making them good people, they could have them be purely selfishly motivated by giving them powers like super strength or superspeed. Then give them jobs that require stuff like that, like construction or even something like restocking shelves. If they agree to help the universe, they get to keep the powers. And if they use those powers at their jobs, they'll get everything done super fast and then they could spend the rest of the day lazing around. Have their entire motivation be "ooh I'll finally get to one up that annoyingly perfect co worker" or something, I don't care, but give them a motivation.

Kill la kill will always be the best magical girl parody, because it actually has a deeper meaning and is actually fun to watch. I think these people forgot how to make an enjoyable show that still has some redeeming qualities and a generally good outcome.
