Honestly, the idea of Adult characters trying to become ‘magical girls’ and dealing with saving the universe really does sound like an idea that has so much potential. I feel like that could have been absolutely hilarious to see. Things like this have been done before. For example, the anime ‘Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt’ ’ is a series that specifically said was meant to parody western cartoons, and Western Cartoon parodies. Hence the over the top use of rude language and raunchiness all in a cutesy and colorful style. But I feel like this show tried so hard to mix in too many Pop culture references, film and internet references. Or it just tries too hard.

When someone says their work is "inspired" by anime, it should mean the creator watched something like, I dunno, lets say "Death Note" and thought "Wow, that show took a seemingly simple premise(a guy finds a murder notebook) and turned it into something smart and suspenseful with nuanced characters! On top of being a great story, this taught me that a premise doesn't need to be super complex so long as I'm creative with what I have, sometime I'll be sure to remember when writing a story of my own"! It should not mean they filled their work with blatantly obvious anime references. One or two in a blue moon is acceptable, but if that's all the "anime" inspiration something has, then it count as being "inspired by anime", you're just throwing a shout-out to something you like.

I do still watch some modern American media. I almost never watch the news because it's always "orange man bad" which just gets old and annoying. I have a Nintendo Switch so I keep up with modern Nintendo games, not so much on other consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, etc. (I do occasionally keep up with stuff on PC tho). As far as comics go, I've almost completely switched over to manga and manwha because American comics are just kinda trash (the modern ones I mean). Every now and then I'll find something interesting but if I'm going into a comic store or going online to find comics that are made in America, I'm only gonna be looking for slightly older Batman comics like the Killing Joke and whatnot. The only modern American comic I have any interest in is usually related to only Batman, nothing else. Its not exactly a good thing for most of the comic book indudtry to rely on Batman, even Marvel is having the same problem with having to rely on Spiderman and the live action movies they keep making. As far as cartoons go, just like comics I've switched over to Japanese media like anime and such. I'll occasionally find something interesting like the new Animaniacs series or the new Adventure Time series but I usually have a hard time finding any good cartoons when most of the good cartoons are surrounded by a bunch of bad ones like Paw Patrol. Most of the good modern series I watch end up just being remakes, sequels, or reboots of a bunch of older series I used to love. I've got nothing against this but I personally would like to see new stories with new never before seen characters make it to the big screen one of these days and not just some reboot, remake, or sequel to an old series I used to love like Adventure Time or something. To answer your question, I've tried to stay up to date with modern American media and I'm not ignorant of what is going on, I've just got little interest in most of the new stuff.

I remember when they said they changed "SciFi" to "Syfy" to stay with the times. That was the moment it became glaringly obvious that someone in charge had no idea what they were doing, whether that be knowing their audience, or even what was current in terms of being "in". I remember hearing about that change after not having cable for a few years and being utterly disappointed: I was the BIGGEST SciFi nerd. It was the one channel I actually watched across the board, unlike how with other channels I'd tune in for only a single show and then change back. I was a kid switching from Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon to watch it, for christ's sake. But that SyFy announcement threw up ALL the red flags: It reeked of someone in their 40's or 50's desperately trying to be hip with the kids and never would be because they're too slow about it and don't understand the kids in the first place. And upon hearing about the shows and movies they had started running, I dropped it to the point of forgetting it was even a thing. XD I see things have only gotten worse since then. Eesh.

The animations also look wrong because of the horrible spacing, generally in animation you want the in between parts of a movement quick and well spaced by mapping out how the frames will move and rewatching the movement over and over again until it looks right. It seems that they didn’t do that and because of that the animation looks choppy and some movements either go by too quick or too slow.

Their pay and their workplace is literally trash (e.g. little roaches under the desk) that my drone job makes twice as his per month. It is sad how ironically unoriginal this show looks. I know the cal-Arts design is used to keep animation costs cheap, but it comes at the expense of making the characters look bland despite their flashy hair colours. Other anime-inspired shows like Code Lyoko, Avatar the Last Airbender, Teen Titans, plus Panty and Stocking (a parody of western animation) all have a distinct artstyle, but this show seems to lack that. What makes matters worse is the cringe dialogue, which could get a pass if it was a parody show like 'Drawn Together'- but it is not. While there are now a decent amount of comedic 'Magical Girl' parodies- Machimaho (great manga), Mahou shoujo Ore,and Puni Puni Poemy to name a few... the concept of two mid-20s Western women gaining Magical Girl powers could have been unique by exploring the inevitable culture shock. Imagine an episode where the girls talking animal guide gets snatched by PETA and they have to rescue him without using their powers, one where they accidentally hospitalize an annoying side character because they blasted them with a bit of magic assuming it would have no effect. Or an episode where one of the MC's abuses her transformation powers to trick a guy/girl they like (who is really into anime) into believing they are a cosplay expert- but then one of the villains exploits the opportunity to wreck the place.

I don't even want to call it animation but I begrudgingly have to because that's default. At this point, western animation is synonymous to shitty animation. Same designs, same ideology... It's what one would call "stagnancy in progress" for animation. A medium that can, and have many designs, is in uniform. Amazing. The kicker? This is from the crowd who "champions" diversity.

There was a time where it seemed like they were just mass-producing dozens of TV shows that looked the same. Fans insist they're cool and unique but...they're not visually interesting enough to care about the differences. And there was a period where the art style was really, really bad and lazy. It was like the standard became "You see this scribble? This is the peak of talent and we want you to emulate that as close as possible". I just can't see anyone going through education on the subject and then being able to respect themselves so little to do that.

One reason that makes me think anime is better than cartoon - (outside South Park, KotH, The Simpsons or anything in the same genre) Anime can make any mundane thing looks interesting, and seems relatable to us to an extent, like just your daily cooking (Today's Menu for the Emiya Family - not SnS level cooking), agricultural study (Silver Spoon), calligraphy (Barakamon), bartending (Bartender) and so on.

Sequels, remakes, remasters, nothing new comes out often if it does it’s usually tied to an existing IP. When’s the last time anyone has gone to the movies (pre COVID) and watch a movie and it wasn’t based on an existing IP. I really don’t remember for myself. Anime does have its problems but they try different things (maybe not with isekai) but way more than here

I've seen average looking anime shows that did better than this with their style. Higurashi's artstyle for instance was often very average or rough to look at, but in comparison to this.
