In Feb 2015 due to broken pipe house flooding, went from 70degree Florida to 6degree Virginia. Parked in driveway with only 20 amp electric. Like you have experienced,it was quite a learning experience. Learned a lot about how to be comfortable in near zero conditions. An Olympic wav catalytic heater is really great for heat (needs no electric and is 90% propane efficient). An entertaining video.👍

A few things us Northerners know about is if you let your water drip during the night it has a constant water flow through your pipes and they shouldn't freeze . Another thing we have is electric heat tapes for water pipes . Wrap around pipes and plug in and pipes stay warm . Another thing that helps are foam pipe wraps . Its like a pool noodle but a smaller diameter with a long slit . Wraps around a run of pipe for insulation . Good luck !

We are enjoying an unprecedented melty day where it normally is crunchy cold with packed snow roads and ice crystal snow. As a winter cyclist, I learned the mantra, there is no bad weather, only bad gear. You had a fleece over a tee with a light acrylic hat and thin gloves. Where's the wool? The gear is why Alaska wasn't as miserable.

I’ve lived in Southern California my entire life, so clearly don’t know anything about what it’s like living in those conditions. Now I understand why people install skirting, tank heating pads, put electric heaters under their rigs, wrap every exposed pipe in heated blankets, and have 1 or 2 one hundred pound propane tanks sitting next to their rigs. Dang, can black water freeze? That would suck if your black tank was full and frozen and everyone had to take a dump! That’s one of the many reasons I like to follow you guys. You stay real and always show us the good and the bad! Your kids are getting so big! It’s amazing how fast they grow.

To help keep the cold from the windows and still have light, I tape bubble wrap over my windows. Tape bottom, and sides but leave top open so sun heat and moisture can escape. To help doors from freezing shut spray the gaskets around door with silicon spray. Have spray bottle full of rubbing alcohol to melt ice. I use it to remove ice from my windows and outside of door. When I was a child in Michigan we kept things from freezing with utility lights. This does not work with LED light bulbs. if forecast to be cold take extra measures.

Just a friendly reminder Nathan when it gets cold you should plug in your truck with an engine block heater it is a 110v 3prong plug it keeps your engine block warm to keep the diesel fuel liquid and not gel up. Diesel geling up is bad for the fuel and the motor.

I’ll give a couple of quick tips, first it sometimes helps to leave cabinet doors inside the rv open so warmth can spread to those areas, second, if it’s real cold, (I’ve stayed down to -14) I use one of those pvc supports (the one that looks like a pvc pipe cut in half lengthwise) for the sewer hose and I run a piece of heat tape in the bottom and around all exposed piping and then put some sort of insulation around it.

Get a can of silicone spray, open the doors on the vehicles and spray the gaskets and door frames, then wipe the excess off. On the seals it's better to spray a rag and wipe the seals. That keeps them from freezing. Also pull the door handles and hold them in the open position and spray the pivots and linkages. For the water and drains, electric heat tapes can make a big difference,

Nathan, something that those of us that grew up in cold weather know is that you need to have a heat source on the side you want to keep warm for insulation to be of much good. And yes "frost proof" spigots are only frost proof if they are empty. It looks like everything turned out OK except for the bank account. Keep the good stuff coming and give the kids a hug for me.

When the blizzard came through Oklahoma recently the wind chill made it -24° for many days I always turn off heated hose and open all my faucets. I empty the tanks and get all the water out of the drain hose. I closed the 2 dogs and myself in the bedroom with 2 electric heaters and their water bowl in the bedroom still was near frozen on top. The toilet lever inside the bowl was froze shut. I dont have heated tanks so no holding water, I have containers of water for various things. This is my second and last winter here, Im going south.

When it gets cold, fill your water tank, unhook the hose and put it in the basement, dump the tanks, disconnect the stinky slinky. If possible, put skirts along the bottom of the RV. and put a stabilizer in the fuel tank, including the generator. My wife and I are avid "winter campers" with lots of experience.

Hit up a farm store or hardware store for a 12' heat tape and aluminum ducting tape. Wrap the heat tape around your drain valves and up the gray and black drain pipes into the underbelly then wrap it in tape. Leave the plug loose enough you can connect it with a short extension cord. It'll thaw and free your drain valves in under and hour. Works like magic in Idaho.

With the outdoor water supply faucet the water shuts off below ground level. When the water’s shut off it drains the pipe to below ground level because the ground retains heat. By leaving it on with little or no flow it keeps water at the top of the faucet which it’s not designed for. The only way to maintain flow without freezing is to open the hot faucet to maintain flow for the outside. It’ll cause the water heater to run but it helps with preventing the gray water tank from freezing. Drain the black water but after closing it leave open the gray water so it flows and keeps the pipes from freezing at the drain valve. If you can find a second cover with a pass through hose coupling you can attach the now black water hose to it and run it into the ground drain. Make sure it doesn’t have a low spot because it’ll freeze. I’d spray paint the ends of the small hose brown or black so you don’t confuse it with potable hoses. Depending on the temperature you may need the heat tape and foam pipe covers as well. When it comes to opening frozen doors warm bottles of alcohol with the snap cap helps a lot. Generally they freeze shut at the same level as the door latches since the latch pulls it tightest to the body at the weather stripping. Often plastic pry tools can help pry out without bending door panels. It can take longer but running the engine heater is the most sure of everything. Plug in your diesel engine heater since you were close to it not starting. If you have an auto start feature leave the heat and the blower near high before shutting it off for the night. Generally the most likely door you can open is the driver door since it’s used most often. If you experience frozen doors spray silicone or something else that prevents water from collecting. Get an infrared temperature gauge so you can spot cold areas and get a propane torch so it can quickly heat frozen areas. By heating quickly the whole volume of ice doesn’t have a chance to expand and crack the faucet as well as some plastic pipes. You’ll notice when heat is applied you’ll see either water vapor or frost building up on the surface being heated. As soon as the vapor and frost disappears you need to move down the run so it doesn’t heat unevenly. If it smokes remove the heat and travel back and forth. Once you get a small amount of flow it’ll melt on its own. Such is the experiences of cold weather. It gets easier as you go along. Safe travels!🙏❤️

When I lived in freezing weather I would leave the black and grey tanks open but have the sewer hose running down hill to the sewer outlet so the sewer hose would never fill up because if it did then the sewer hose would freeze and I would have a mess my black and grey tanks and plumbing were all exposed to the freezing weather . I would fill fresh water tank and use water pump for water it would last two people for about 3 days.

Nathan I feel your pain. Since you have to replace your water valve you might consider relocating it just below the ground in a valve box. We are currently wintering (lol...living) in our travel trailer on-site where we are building our new home. It has been extremely cold for us too and our shower and bathroom sink have frozen 5 times now. We are grateful it's ONLY been 5 times though. We prepped a lot before winter hit. We heat tape wrapped our water hydrant and insulated it and then actually built a bug wooden box to go over it. We heat tape wrapped our hose from the hydrant to our trailer and used foam wrapping around it and then stuck it inside one of our spare, clean, black tank extension tubes. We put that white 2 inch foam board with the silver backing securely around the bottom of our trailer and then stacked 2 bales of hay all around it. We've done well so far except when we haven't moved our portable radiant heater inside our bathroom early enough in the evening or if we forget to leave our bathroom sink dripping a little bit. We are hoping that now that we are getting ready to head into Feb, the single digit temps will be a memory of the trials of living in a trailer during the winter. Marissa, I can totally relate to the difficulty of not being able to spend time outside! I work inside our trailer all day 5 days (or more) a week and being able to sit outside in the evenings is what helped me not go bonkers as we started living in this 200 square foot space. BUT...I am so over not being able to go outside and relax in the evenings! Hopefully, both the house will be finished soon and the warmer temps will be back quickly! (Although not too warm!)

We disconnected water and sewer hose, filled our fresh water 2/3 full, made sure the tank heaters were on, didn't use electric heat in RV, had our propane heater set to 65f, set a heat bulb in the passthrough, plugged in our diesel truck so would be able to use it. We didn't skirt because we weren't planning on staying long, heading south after Christmas. Our weather temperature went down to -13f and our fresh water tank froze. Yeah, you can make all the best plans and something will still go wrong.

LOL Ive been there and done that, its worse when you have no idea it is coming. My RV would stay warm but the floors would be super cold. PS warm / hot water freezes faster then cold water. Its counter intuitive. be careful using warm or hot water it can make things worse when it is that cold. As for tips. insulate the hoses very well and use heat tape on all of it. There are water hookups that look like the one you got there that drain out when they are closed so they wont freeze up. if you have to replace that one any way I would look into them. though if you leave them on like that even they can freeze up.

Hahahaha!!!! I couldn’t stop laughing. That’s a bad day for sure! I’m glad you got things going for the family though. I hope there wasn’t any damage to the camper.

Hah you need a block heater for your truck. Your temperature is Temps we see throughout winter in Alberta plus we get wind chills that can drop it to -40 C not F. At least it will be short lived and you know for next time. Hopefully none of your pipes froze enough to develop a leak.
