Nu metal became popular due to its catchyness in its bouncy riffs and its lyrics that are relatable to many people. It was metal for people who wanted to get into the genre but not deep dive into death and black metal. Nu metal holds a special place as a gateway genre for metal to me. If it weren’t for bands like Korn, Slipknot, and System of a Down; I wouldn’t be into metal as a whole.
@TheMetalTempestYT9 күн бұрын
I'm so happy I included the ending about gateway bands because that's so true for me as well. Alt metal and nu metal turned me onto so much metal! Breaking Benjamin and Linkin Park were the two biggest for me.
@nathanielkosbab41536 күн бұрын
I totally agree, a lot of people found solace in the music from these different bands, or an outlet for anger/pain. They also proved to be gateway bands into the rabbit hole of metal, the Slipknot to Whitechapel or Chelsea Grin pipeline is very real.
@NuMetalfan19968 күн бұрын
I feel like when everyone talks about Nu-Metal today, it’s the same 15 bands that get mentioned They also don’t talk about that it was popping off in California mostly, and actually the original terms being talked about where LA Metal and California Metal to describe these bands that were popping off in California, but because Limp Bizkit who were from Florida, and Slipknot who were from Iowa, they couldn’t call it LA Metal or California Metal no more. And then in 1998/1999 either Metal Hammer magazine or Kerrang Magazine over here in the U.K. coined the term Nu-Metal to describe these bands, and suddenly the term hit the world and it became known as Nu-Metal. But as a Nu-Metal fan, I actually prefer the more unknown bands that didn’t quite make it into being a big band, like Nonpoint, Pleymo, One Minute Silence, Flaw, Ill Nino, these bands sadly didn’t get as big. But I feel it’s the more unknown acts that you get a better understanding of what Nu-Metal is and was.

I have never heard of One Minute Silence but 40 below summer, Cold, bloodsimple, and Nothingface were smaller to be recognized Also did you know adema was korn's brother
@NuMetalfan19968 күн бұрын
@@Kennysstan The lead vocalist of Adema’s first two albums is Jonathan Davis half brother. And One Minute Silence were a Irish/British version of Rage Against The Machine. But unfortunately they didn’t become known. Check out their 2000 album Buy Now Saved Later, it’s a fantastic Nu-Metal album.

@@portalalchemist320 oh yeah there are a few Nu-Metal fan channels like Haz Sub TV, Necro Cannibal, Eric 7 Strings, Melomano Adicto, and others. Haz Sub TV has literally been uploading obscure Nu-Metal content since KZbin started in like 2005. You can’t get any more Nu-Metal than Haz Sub TV, if you watch that guys channel you are 100% a pure Nu-Metal fan, like I am. Eric 7 Strings who does Nu-Metal guitar covers used to also upload Nu-Metal albums from all different bands, but I think he got hit with copyright and had to delete all the albums he uploaded, so now he’s just a guitar cover channel now, Melomano Adicto uploads obscure Nu-Metal, Alt Metal, Post Grunge, Alt Rock and some Post Hardcore albums as well from all different bands. The Post Hardcore albums (which that genre isn't my thing at all) he uploads are from bands that have some Alt Metal, Nu-Metal and Post Grunge tendencies within their Post Hardcore sound.

I'm always saying Hybrid Theory got me through my parent's divorce. I say it half-jokingly sometimes, but it's the truth. Nu metal was a fundamental aspect of who I became as a person.
@MrGameAndDvD8 күн бұрын
I know you mentioned it, but it really was the anger and hostility of the world. People were angry, and it was just the best way to express themselves. It also wasn’t just heavy all the time. Duality by slipknot was a really good gateway song to a lot of people. Freak on a leash was a monumental song in music. I grew up in the heart of that when people want it just to feel so different it was perfect.

The thing about Nu-Metal is that it's not actually a genre but rather a point of time(late 90s-early 2000s) and place(mostly California). I mean Nu-Metal as an actual musical(well, metal) genre does exist but it's only a small portion of the Nu-Metal era. Musically speaking Korn, Limp Bizkit and System of a Down have very little in common yet they're all lumped in under the Nu-Metal umbrella. I would be much more accurate(albeit not at all popular) to call Limp Bizkit Rap Metal, System of a Down Alternative Metal and Korn Nu-Metal(as in the actual genre). Bands like Slipknot and Disturbed did share some common elements with Korn in that time, in parts of their discography, and those parts are certainly Nu-Metal as well, but not all of Slipknot and Disturbed are Nu-Metal, far from it. Nor is Korn for that matter as their later works shifted away from Nu-Metal into different spheres.
@WC_Beer_Reviews8 күн бұрын
I graduated HS in '99 when Nu-Metal was really blowing up, like Korn and Limp Bizkit were on TRL next to Britney, Christina, and all the boy bands. It encompassed a lot of sounds. That made it multicultural in it's audience. Grunge was quickly surrounded by gate keepers, who could or couldn't be considered grunge. But Nu-Metal had no such problem. It actually got to the point that some bands didn't want to be included, but fans did it anyway (ie, Rage, Deftones) but soon enough by the later half of the 2000s the taste makers said Nu-Metal and post grunge were uncool. They made the fans out to be misogynistic frat bros, or trailer trash. But look at us now! 😂 back in the cool club!

Nu-Metal got big, because there were so many kids that were born in the early to mid 80’s that were coming of age during the Nu-Metal period, that wanted something that was angry and aggressive, yet funky and rhythmic. They wanted to fucking party but where also angsty, so how do you get angsty teens to party?, let’s Jump Da Fuck Up. Nu-Metal was Grunge but for the kids that liked Sport and wanted to have some fun. Grunge was too depressive and jaded, and so Nu-Metal came along that ticked some angry and angsty boxes, but also needed to be fun and danceable as well. Grunge was for the poor latchkey kids that didn’t know if they had a home to go to after school, where as Nu-Metal was for the kids that wanted to be the popular jock and get the hot girl but weren’t and didn’t.
@gothicshark9 күн бұрын
I think it was the intensity and power some of the first big acts had, Korn, Disturbed, and Rage Against the Machine all blew up about the same time, and they just resonated with people, yes I know Rage doesn't count, but at the time the fans of one was a fan of all three. They kind of swept up a new feel, they weren't grunge, they weren't middle class rich kids in dirty jeans, they felt like angry street kids from the city. If you wanted to mosh, they were great for a mosh, gawds does anyone mosh anymore? been almost 30 years since I went to one. But yeah it was metal with the punk feel, while grunge was EMO college dropouts selling weed.

I also think a big part of its rise is due to it basically being a melting pot of a genre. Basically, there's a little bit of something for most people, and the sounds it took from were all popular ones at the time. Well, that and it was kind of the perfect angry white boy music, and there were/are a lot of those lol

To me nu metal is interesting for the same reason why I like grunge - it's essentially an umbrella term made to group together a bunch of bands that sounded like nothing else but also not too much like each other. Some bands are derived from groove metal, some from post hardcore, some from industrial and some just wanna rap over metal riffs. As a result, you'll almost certainly dislike a part of the genre, but you're also probably gonna find something you'll enjoy. The underground part of nu metal in particular has tons of ridiculous crap, but dig through it for long enough, and you'll discover great underrated stuff like Low Gear or Incert Coin.
@nucygnet58815 күн бұрын
Actually, it isn't an umbrella term. All Nu Metal bands have a sound derived from Korn. It's basically Helmet riffing, but a lot heavier, with funk inspired bass and hip-hop drums. The fact that bands sounded different it's bc they mixed Nu Metal with other stuff like Rap Metal and Groove Metal, but still a real genre. You can say the same with Grunge.
@nathanielkosbab41536 күн бұрын
Nu metal was a true gateway genre, people who started with Korn and Linkin Park are now big parts of the fanbase for these bands that are really deep down the rabbit hole for metal genres. If you go to a Deathcore, Grindcore, or even a Doom Metal concert a lot of people started out with Nu metal, that genre as a gateway is absolutely up there with Heavy and Classic Thrash Metal. Even my metal fandom is based off of Nu metal, I got into Slipknot, now I jam out to Circle of Dead Children, Vulvodynia, and Worm Shepherd. Without Nu metal I, in my honest opinion, would be a "Metal is just noise" person who would be pretty much trapped in the mainstream of music.
