Sterling Archer Hody = Killmonger. And yes I agree. What Oda is doing right now by explicitly contrasting the Sulong Minks with the Beast Pirates is really interesting thematically too. I haven’t figured out what it means exactly yet. Jack, himself a general of the animal kingdom pirates, gassing and torturing an actual independent animal kingdom might have symbolic significance in regards to the cannibalistic nature of imperialism. Maybe we find out more soon where Oda is going with this.

@JAMF huh? The incredible attention to detail here is that Lucci disguised himself as a civilian in Water 7 without raising any suspicions for 5 years. Then later turns out it was expressed in his fruit, Neko Neko no mi: Model - Leopard, an animal that is a master at camouflage. TBF tho, usually, One Piece fans are not easily impressed if a story/character/dialogues are not masterally crafted... at least not for me. That's why I am a fan of this series because as we've just witnessed here with Mr. Morj's great analyses of the series, I, like the rest of us here are still surprised that even as diehard fans of the series, there are still lots of instances where we missed out on details and information craftily put there by the author in order for us to discover. This connection of Lucci's undercover mission and his devil fruit was just one of the many things that almost always goes under the radar. And pointing it out in the open just sometimes blows everyone's mind. This is the reason why I love One Piece.

I like to think about Wapol being purposefully written as a bad, "forgettable" villain to spark a contrast with the "A man dies when he's forgotten" quote. Maybe that's a stretch but at the very least it's ironic. Drum Island is one of the few arcs when the villain is extremely bad in both power and personality, never a threat even for a split second. He literally got pushed away from the island. While the most memorable character, alongside Chopper and I guess Kureha, is Hirlock, the man who literally died. Everyone fondly remembers him, Chopper, Dalton, Kureha, the inhabitants and every single one of us.
@12thmocha114 жыл бұрын
nah, your on to something there. cause man, I always forget Wapol, but Hirlock is unforgettable for his speech and other factors. Perhaps it wasn't necessarily on purpose, but was or wasn't that just makes Oda's writing that much better that he could do that either unconsciously or consciously .

Yoooo, I can't remember if I talked about it to you, or just others, but did we ever have a conversation a while back where I mentioned that point that Luffy contrasts every villain? I've been saying that for ages and I think we might have discussed it at one point. If you did hear it from me, I definitely don't mind it making its way into this video - especially as you've taken the idea way further than I ever realized it (you realized a lot more nuance to Arlong than I did, and I never thought about it as much for the post-EB villains). I really love the point that the villains aren't meant to be someone you can agree with or live in a moral gray area. That they're complex but thoroughly despicable is perfect for the kind of story One Piece is. I think this works with the contrast they all have with Luffy show the variety of ways that people can end up falling from who they could have been, because their wills were too weak. Luffy has a strong enough will that he can maintain the simple, innocent morals he does, whereas so many other people were too weak, and end up taking the easy way out. To try to lazily gain power like Moria, to try to force others into his crew like Kaido, to be ashamed of their identity as a pirate like Kuro, to just go along with a philosophy because it lets you kill like Lucci instead of thinking for yourself, et cetera. I see them as people who could have been as great as Luffy if their will was strong enough to not fall for all those forms of weakness.

@@MrMorj Yeah, no way to know for sure and I don't want to steal credit or anything - the credit is definitely yours for really expanding the idea and connecting it to everything else Oda does with villains. The fact that Blackbeard was fine with passing 40 years of his life being almost no one until he found what he was looking for makes him the most terrifying villain in one piece. Black Beard actually comments on this himself several times, that he can essentially always "bet on himself" because "luck", or rather "destiny" seems to always favor him. Great video An other good point we could give to oda’s villains : how he hypes them up I mean Crocodile, Doflamingo, Blackbeard, every admirals and emperors All of them were so well handled even before we met them

kaido who represents a legendary godly figure who believes is chosen to be the strongest against luffy's drive of strength of virtue

I think kaido is more of a "Conqueror who breaks other into being his subordinates vs luffy charisma and leadership making others follow him"

Always noticed the correlation to villain's and their abilities in the series but why has it took me this long to notice that 'a leopard can't change its spots' and Kaku's comment that an assassin can only ever be an assassin 🤦♂️

I think the most important part about the contrast betwen luffy and big mom isn´t their difference in resilience and self control, but their view in diversity. While big mom go out of her way to make "alliances" with other races and kingdons, alliances that are hollow and basicaly just for show. Her counterpart is Luffy that make friends and allies in his path, without having any bigger reason or making it an objective, and thar why he has so mutch diversity in his crew as said by big mom herself in the later chapters

I think when people are comparing villains from different series, they often leave out the authors aim and direction and also the nature of the series out of it. Example Dragon Ball does not have deep villains by any means. Most deep were Vegeta, a bad guy turned good and Zamasu, who liked to flex philosophically. But villains in Dragon Ball are perfect as they are for the series like Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball did not need morally gray villains, because Toriyamas goal was never to write story that complex. That is not to say Dragon Ball is bad. I love Dragon Ball. Toriyama just wanted to write a story week by week where you got your adrenaline kicks from that weeks chapter by action and powerscaling. That's why a character like Frieza is a great villain for Dragon Ball where for example Stain is great villain for My Hero Academia. They show authors means and goals for the story. I enjoy them both for different reasons.

I think the best villains are ones who serve their thematic and story intent. It can be a gray villains or unsympathetic villains. Or even both in some series

Skypia was all about communication and colonization, so Enel has the power to hear everything but never true listened to the people. He also felt it was his divine right to literally own the land. Morj, you consistently put out the best One Piece analysis video and have given me a greater appreciation of the series!

Blackbeard will soon reign like no other villain before. One piece had several great villains, but Doffy and Croc are my favourites so far.

Same goes with sakazuki what I love about him he doesn’t see himself as a villain and he’s a marine driven on absolute Justice and his main goal is the end of piracy he’s see’s all pirates as evil and the world black and white like the punisher he’s the one villain I’m looking forward too seeing in the future for Blackbeard is the shadow of Luffy Akainu is the Dark mirror of luffy

Its so true we live in an era where most ppl wanna seem big brained and hype up villains who are sympathetic/may have a point cause it makes them think or whatever but we undermine the other ways complexity can be implemented in an antagonist and you described One Piece's brand perfectly. Its cool when sympathetic or agreeable villains are done well but sometimes i just wanna see a dick that's so entertainingly hateable but (masterfully thematically written) get his shit rocked

The point that you made about morias df ability in relation to his self is fantastic and this is why I am subbed to you. Not because of the power scaling or future strawhat characters thing I hope in the future you make more like this
@lucriciousthetrainer43654 жыл бұрын
That was an excellent analysis you've made. I'd also extend this to Akainu. He's an Admiral that's supposed to represent justice yet he's so cruel in the way he treats people and what he did to Ace. I am looking forward to when Luffy beats the shit out of him. Also, one thing to note is that Oda has expressed why Luffy never kills his opponents because he wants Luffy's wins to represent that his ideology triumphs over his opponents.
