I’ve been locked for almost 5 years. I had to start self maintenance because my Locktician retightens my hair TOO FAST and I could hear my hair pop as she would pass the lock through the base. She recommended a 6 week schedule and advised if I did not maintain same I would have BUMPY locs! At first I followed that advice to the letter because I wanted congruent locs!! Then I realized my hair texture would NOT produce a bumpy appearance because I have very soft 4C hair that is perfect for locking and does not bunch!! Now I retighten every 8 weeks and my locs are still uniform and have not thinned out because my hair grows approximately 1/2 per month and the hairs are not shedding/slipping out from base of the lock. That’s my theory at least! Hopefully I won’t experience problems in the future as I’ve been on this schedule for the past 6 months or so. Thank you for another great honest and informative video!!

If you like it, I love it! But if this is the new trend I will take my Cosmo license and do something else. If people like it loose and not tight to the root I’m fine with it but 2 rotations is double the time and it’s not making sense to me. 8 weeks? 1 rotation.

Your locs are beautiful and I really enjoy watching your videos! You are very engaging 😊 I agree, 4 weeks is too early and I have hair that grows away from the locs in my front section. However, I can still make it 6-8 weeks before I retighten again. Next time I retighten my hairline I feel like I'll have to say "gentle" over and over to remind myself not to get too heavy handed 🖑

After my install, I went back four weeks later and my consultant pushed me out to 5 weeks. I did that consistently for about a year, then I moved to another state and it took FOOORRREVER to find another consultant who was actually accepting transfer clients so I went 14 weeks before I got back on a 5-week schedule. I personally like getting retightenings every 5/6 weeks. I plan on taking the retightening class so that if I ever have trouble getting an appointment I can at least do it myself.

I've heard & read that you can overly retie, as the constant tension can compromise the roots. I'm 8+mo's in and go every 4 weeks. With over 670 locs, re-ties are a pain in the butt & pocket! The saving grace is that although expensive, my loctician is great. My hair is thick, healthy and averages about 1/4-1/2" growth/monthly (but the shrinkage is Real! lol). Once I reach the 12mo mark, I will insist on pushing out to 5 weeks regardless of what she says. Eventually, I want to get to 7 week re-tie mark. I will slowly begin to learn how to re-tie myself (and NoT by taking the SL class!) to gain control. I absolutely HaTe having to totally rely on someone else to maintain my hair! Thank you for your time and service to us, TnisiaAli, for these informative vids! xox~

I retighten my own hair, and have been since I installed my microlocs two years ago. I retighten when I see growth and when my roots start to nest up. In the summer, I experience a little more growth and loose hair, thus I retighten more frequently, at around 4 weeks. During other months, I retighten anywhere between 5 to 6 weeks, only when I see that my hair is growing and/or feel that it is nesting. I once went 8 weeks in between retightening, and it was so much work to get my hair back on track. I'm not a stickler for my diamond grid, although it is pretty when I do spend extra time to emphasize and highlight it. I have allowed my locs to show me how they want to be, and I retighten accordingly. NO, I do not love the "plucked chicken" lol, I try not to tighten them so tight as to produce that effect, lol. Sending an energetic smile to you and this community you've built!

I took the retightening class; however, I prefer to go to my consultant because it takes me about a week to finish my entire head. I have a tendency to create knots in my locks. That's an amazing observation. I just spoke about something similar in my video today about 'Questions you must ask your regular loctician'. Hopefully, it will post in the bext few days. Ultimately I feel the quality of the reti is a bigger threat than the frequency. This depends on WHO is doing the RETI and HOW they are doing it. Initially WAIT!!!!! Call her back and see what she suggests. I believe I was told wither 4 or 6 weeks, BUT Braid and Band and don't be rough. Be very gentle. Don't budge without braiding and banding first. DO NOT use regular shampoo. It will be too softening, most of them. Reconnect with her and she what SHE says since she did the install. That would be my first option, before entertaining anything else. Normally, a new install comes with the Sisterlock shampoo that roughens the cuticle (I think) or they suggest you buy it. I use Dr. BRONNERS and mix with 1 parts shampoo to 3 parts water. If I were at the beginning I would greatly the ration of water to shampoo 4:1 probably.

As long as my locks are I've had serial locks that will just NOT do right! LOL! This has allowed the soft hair at the front to have a chance to lock without constantly coming out. Everyone is not willing to do this, but I felt I had to do something.
@Fauntazee5 жыл бұрын
@@solangeWilliams WoW, you wash twice a Week?!? I wash twice a Month. Do you braid&band? I'm new at this (8+mos in) but perhaps that is why your scalp is dry. You're not giving your scalp time to build up sebum. Especially when I'm on a H20 drinking craze, I can feel the natural oil (sebum) in my hair. Making it shiny, moist feeling (not dry like straw), and healthy looking. Additionally oil can cause slippage; but your Consultant recommends it, so I cannot over-ride her. Other than a few drops of essential oils I put in my spray bottle (which I only use periodically), I do not oil my scalp/hair (but when I was loose natural, I oiled as if there was a fishfry in my head). After about 2 mo's after install, my head started making it's own natural oil-sebum (the more H20 I drink, the better). My scalp is not dry, flaky, itchy (I understand each head is different, but just trying to offer a tip or two). Only daily products I use is alkaline water or rose water w/o glycerin. I use my essential oil spray about once a week. Wishing you well! Good luck! But I'm in same boat as you regarding edges slipping out. Top forward still has loose ends; back loose ends are locking up. My consultant just keep putting my edges right back in, and they are taking hold.
@solangeWilliams5 жыл бұрын
@@Fauntazee twice a week is twice for the month hun (there's 4 weeks in a month) lol. And my scalp has always been dry no matter how much water I dry (I drink half a gallon every day ). It's just my texture of hair and I'm ok with it now. My edges don't come out completely but they are the first to loosen by the root which is why I feel I have to go every month cause I don't want them to come completely out. I'll have more patience with them and if by year 2 (in 6 months) they don't want to stay put, then I'll do what Tunisia said above 🤷🏾♀️. Thanks for the advice 😁

After I went in for my free reti she suggested every 4 weeks but her reti fee is $150. So I showed my girlfriend how to reti my hair. I’m on the schedule with every four weeks with one rotation. JazLytrice please don’t focus on time. As a Sisterlock trainee I see the breakage fast locticians do. It’s physically impossible to do a neat job with these unrealistic timings. 8 weeks will cause marrying and breakage. People are just slipping in and out of your hair snapping the other hairs that hold your locs together. They don’t care. Yes I want my money too but I want my work to be neat. I have hair down to my butt. Everyone wants to know how. Well I’m super gentle and loving to my hair so I don’t believe in rough housing other people’s hair. People think married locs are normal. No, it’s the last resort. Read the book. I’m sure your gf has it or has took notes on it.

I established my starters by interlocking about 1.5 months ago. When I shampoo or wet my hair every day, some of my interlocks have large slippages, like they are about to come loose. I find myself tightening them almost daily, but leave about 1-2 rotations from the roots. This sometimes results in me marrying locs so I have to take them down and restart them. Ahwww nice sweet spot. Unsure about breakage on the ends if your hair wasnt permed oreviouskybor colored.....hmmmmmmm......that's strange. Any chemical treatment? I wonder if it could be excessive dryness or hard water?
@2280lilly5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure maybe dryness and I do dye my locks. And I will be trying the treatments you gave.
