Also I was born in 1990 and remember cassette tapes and the shift to CDs. I even had a walkman before I had a portable CD player. I also remember recording songs I wanted directly from the radio to put on a cassette. I also remember the shift from VHS to DVD and then Blu-ray, and using limewire and Napster when illegal music downloads first became a thing. What do they mean millennials don't remember tapes?? For example, I lived in a different state for a year and couldn't vote (you register at a specific address) so I went to the nearest electoral college and explained why I wouldn't be voting. They give you some paperwork, but that's about it. If you don't justify why you didn't vote, you have to pay a fee and you're at risk of losing your passport, as I said before.

I think the confusion is that generational names usually refer to when people are BORN. So Boomers are 1945-1965 and so on. So when people hear “Millennials” they’re thinking people born around the time of the beginning of the Millennium, aka around the year 2000, not people who came of age around that time. I know I thought that until I found out that the 2000 (1998-2010 to be precise) people are the Zeds.

There's an odd spot. There's gen X that has the work ethic, then millennials and that have it also, but gen Y that gets mixed into millennials but is like a 7 year step, they just don't have it. People forget there is a 15 year age gap between the youngest and oldest members of these arbitrary generation groups. I’m a younger Gen x, the older members are fast approaching 60. They don’t look like me, and I don’t look like them. Most of my kids’ friends parent are millennials, and I fit right in.

Was going to comment on that. I'm 31 and my theory is that older people haven't adjusted to the fact that we are in 2020. They still think it's 2012 or something. Someone in their 30's for them must have been born in the 70 or 80's depending on how old they are. My dad has this issue,he can't believe that I'm that old.

​@@kartos. agreed. I think it's because many of us don't have kids, aren't married, and definitely are nowhere near owning a house - much of which the older generations were already doing at our age. So they infantalize us and think of us as inherently "not adults" because they can't conceptualize that someone can be an adult, doing adult things, but NOT have these traditional "adult" things under their belts.

Geriatric millennials are Gen X’s younger siblings. I enjoyed growing up around my millennial cousins. They were much more hopeful that the world could be better. My generation became bitter and many of them gave up. Keep up the good work. Move the world forward even if they are kicking and screaming. Just remember all of Gen X isn’t mean as that person.

Yeah! My manager poked fun at millennials at our morning meeting. I raised my hand like "I'm a millennial". They were shocked. Thought that millennials were teenagers. No!! What are you talking about? The generations are basically just groups of people which are likely to have shared experiences (due to the socio-economic and geopolitical state of the world/their country at the time). It has nothing to do with generations in the familial sense, it's just you who misunderstood. Also, it's mainly a tool for anthropologists and others who study society + its people. So it's not "crap", it has its uses. Some people may misuse it, but that has no bearing on its value.

There's some truth to that. Older people perceive the passage of time differently than younger people. 1 year seems longer when you're 5 years old than when you're 50. That's because at 5, 1 year is 20% of your life whereas at 50, 1 year is only 2% of your life. So to a boomer, those 20 years passed and it was probably nothing to them.
