Brigitte was supposed to save Overwatch.
The game was being dominated by a single meta, Dive, and every match was playing out the exact same way.
So Blizzard designed Brigitte, the perfect counter to Dive. She would fix everything and make Overwatch fun to watch again..
Instead, she destroyed the game.

Honestly, as someone who stopped playing OW, the issue is that every game is the same, no matter what the meta is. There is no game to game variation, because the roles are too limited. Support means healing. Your primary job is to keep your team up, and that's all you do. Game after game after game. Tanks are much the same way. Support in Dota offers a huge variety of reposibilities. You are primarily in charge of warding and keeping carries alive, but that takes many different forms. You might be an initiator. You might be a roamer. You might be the healer. You might be a nuker. So if you aren't playing carry, there is still a lot of flashy plays you can make. To me at the end of the day, there is a design issue at the core of Overwatch that kills any of the potential the game has. Plus it just feels corporate, bland, and generic, but that might just be me.

Like a year into playing it and you've seen everything there is to see. You've played every scenario there is to play. And God forbid you wanna get to the higher levels of the game. Because at that point it isn't about playing the game it's about playing the meta whether you like it or not. Then what's the point? Also the characters get so boring. No builds, no customization of abilities, no weapon variation... Just the same old shit

That's so true. I played competitive shooters like CS and MOBAS like LoL, Dota, HotS, and Overwatch has that problem that every fucking game is the same. Roles are repetitive and every time you pick a champ you know exactly what you'll be doing for the whole game. Your behavior is almost untouched by the enemy team compisiton, like every champ has to be played the same, game after game, to be most effective. And don't get me started on the tactics. Basically no need for tactics when the whole team can just dive in, game after game, and win with 0 strategy. And no matter what you do, you can't counter that. The game would have been so much better if characters could have had different weapons and a bit changed up skills, like buying items or talents, to change their play style from game to game. In the end, I left the game because I got bored. Bored of the same gameplay, champ by champ, game by game. Bored of the lore that got an update like once or twice a year. What a collosal failure.

BadatStuff aphelios isn’t nearly as bad as brig. Upon release, he may have been the strongest ADC in the game, but at least he didn’t invalidate an entire class of champions and actually had weaknesses. Aphelios is immobile and kind of hard to play if you’re new to him, whereas brig was pretty brain dead.

I feel like one thing worth mentioning about brig and the reason she was so strong was because of dive. Dive had been meta for a very long time and people were honestly bored of it. They tried to counter it with a buff to junkrat but that didn't work so brig was the answer. People will always complain, but goats went for far too long imo.

In terms of skill required she’s basically mercy on crack. Requires zero skill or aim like mercy, but can disrupt play so well at low and even high level play. They introduced a lot of really important supports, for better or worse. Every support that was added has the ability to shut down ultimates with just their cool downs. Yet OGs like Lucio and Zen can only counter ultimates with their own ultimate. As a result Lucio and mostly Zen receive zero love anymore, yet receive no quality of life changes.

Paladins has the items and cards system to prevent things like this. In Paladins, if the enemy team is abusing shields- then you can buy Wrecker to destroy shields faster. Paladins also has an item to reduce crowd control.

Personally i find that the biggest issue with Paladins is that it crashes way too frequently. Not only does it crash constantly, but it takes anywhere from 3 to 6 minutes just to get back into a match you were kicked out of. The support role makes Overwatch more unique than other shooters. When they introduced Doomfist you no longer can position well, win 1v1 skirmish, exist without relying on your team. Of course in top 500 this isn't an issue. But in the majority rank where millions upon millions play his kit is too disrupting. His counter is skillful mechanics and he doesn't need team play to get value in ranks with a disparity of this. Brigitte ruined Overwatch League. But Doomfist ruined Overwatch.

What’s even worse about brig during this time is that not only could she destroy all DPS in a duel but she could also be able to destroy tanks as well. I remember one time in OW1 and I was playing DVA trying to get my rank placements up and it came to a 1v1 as everyone else was dead or either running back to point after spawning. She was Unkillable and I couldn’t do anything about it. Her healing just overthrew my missile damage and my matrix did nothing since she is a melee character. I also notice her cooldowns just overthrow mine aswell, she would get her shield bash and boop faster than I would get my missiles and boosters. By the time I ejected out of my Mech my genji was back with me on point. We both got rolled even though genji was ulting her. Ridiculous meta.

Brig being the way she was at launch was a symptom of the overwatch balance team pulling survivorability out of the supports. Slowly from the point the game came out they were taking damage and survivability away from the supports to the point where dive was so effective because the supports couldn't survive it. So in their infinite wisdom they created a character that seemingly had all of that survivability and defensive capability that they took away from the other supports and rolled them into one to balance out dive.

Honestly, I know this is an older vid, but I'm sure the main killer of the game was open role selection. Congruency in team composition is implemented across the board with most (if not all) different televised sports, which keeps the strategy and playmaking concentrated onto the skill of the players. Having the open role system automatically creates a crazy amount of room for error when it comes to how teams could play out in a sporting environment. This leads to uncertainty and confusion in following the game for a viewing audience, and it just becomes a mess when it comes to how to recruit players year to year if there are constant changes and shifts, especially in regards to balance if you have to account for the permutation of ALL possible team comps for competition at the highest level of play. With millions of dollars invested into the Overwatch League and to garner the support of Disney/ESPN, there should've been scrutiny to even the smallest detail on how the game should be structured for a team sport. Don't blame Brigitte's design for this error in judgement, blame the producers of the Overwatch League for their own negligence and also lack of communication with the mechanics design team, thus creating such a blatant oversight in how to present Overwatch as a competitive sport as opposed to a team-based objective online video game. Restricted comp roles should have been in Overwatch from the start if they planned on it being so serious. --Thank you for coming to my TEDx talk--

I know it sounds toxic, but before goats, you needed a good healer, tanks, and DPS. The thing is that Brig was the response to something that was already broken. Before her, Doomfists, Tracers, Genjis would all go largely uncontested because in the hands of a good player no one really could stop them. Playing support back in the days of the dive meta was just NOT fun. You were always the first target and it didn't matter how good your positioning or mechanics were, it only mattered how well your team could peel for you so you could do just enough for your team to win the fight before you finally died to the constant onslaught of attacks thrown at you (same thing if you played any character with low mobility, really). But then Blizzard's move was to totally tip the scale to the other side by dropping Brigitte with a seriously OVERLOADED kit.

I've noticed a pattern with most competitive games where DLC characters are stupidly OP when they launch. This probably is used as incentive to buy the character, and they are gradually nerfed to be more fair. However, sometimes a character is so fundamentally godlike that the devs can't nerf them without making them unplayable. The best they can do is superficial stuff, but it's never enough. They just have to wait for a sequel where the character is on the base roster and can be designed around the new engine and mechanics to be more fair.

YES! exactly! It was always walk up as Rein holding your shield up for your team, getting stunned by a Brig, into being melted by the enemy team and suddenly you left your team on a 5v6. I quit the game shortly after that. Only returned after 2-2-2 was added

@@TEEJ. Exactly this. If you play a competitive game professionally then your livelihood depends on you winning so you take what you can to have the best chance to win. Not their fault that it was so clear and became so boring.

@@ragreenburg Yep. People who flame professionals or blame the existence of meta are just short sighted. A waiter learns to carry the most amount of dishes at once, while taking the fastest routes from kitchen to customer. Why? If they do not, they will not be as efficient, they may receive less tips, and may be fired in favour of someone who does. People confuse the need to play meta as the problem, when the actual problem is that the meta is bad(boring to watch/play/learn)/was good but has gone stale over time.

@@TEEJ. Absolutely. It's not anyone's fault aside from how the game is balanced. Look at CSGO where they basically use 3 guns for about 70% of the time then complain when a new gun gets buffed and cry about it as if they aren't already using the best guns so why's it even matter.

They really should've buff DPS like giving them 2.5x DMG on critical. Or nerfing healing like medic in TF2 where if you receive DMG the heal you receive is massively reduce.
