My grandpa passed away two years ago and this was the last place I remember him taking me. Since 15 years ago, he took me to Lemon-ya where I first tasted okonomiyaki and every time I visit Japan (I live in Canada) we made it a tradition to go there. I recommend to my friends and everyone watching to try out this place, it is delicious food made by the most chill chefs. Located in Takadanobaba, Tokyo

That’s a really heartwarming story Toshi S-R. Thank you for sharing that with us. May your grandpa rest in peace. It’s been at least one year since you wrote your comment, so I’m sure that my reply will trigger some nice memories of him. All the best.

ngl... a lot of japanese people sound like this- they tend to be quite calm so when they talk about something they’re familiar with it’ll sound very soothing, on the other hand if they’re uncertain, the intonation in their phrases is all over the place.. or at least that was my experience surprisingly media/tv personalities or people on the radio have quite high pitched voices and use a lot of intonation, are generally just VERY expressive with their voice, it’s for comedic and entertainment purposes but just sounds annoying imo

One big difference is they haven’t developed a Pavlovian response to getting tipped. Ive also found the service to be better than countries that rely on tipping. But of course, you can’t teach someone to be proud of their work. It must be learned.

I met a kind older gentlemen at a cafe in the Nihombashi area 2 years ago. We hit it off and he took me to a local Okonomiyaki place that made various types of Okonomiyaki-to my recollection, it was both the Osaka and Hiroshima style. I’ve had Hiroshima style before, but not Osaka style. Honestly, I don’t think you could go wrong with either. It’s a great dish to eat with family or friends. I started learning to make it 2 years ago after returning from overseas. It’s important to have the correct utensils & skills to flip Okonomiyaki if you’re going to make bigger ones. My first attempts were pretty bad. But over time, I’ve gotten better at it. And while mine will never measure up to these shops, it’s a delicacy that’s rather hard to find, but not too difficult to make once you’ve figured out how you like to make yours.

First night in Hiroshima during the rugby world cup we chose a random okonomiyaki place, as soon as we walked in we saw loads of rugby memorabilia, the owners didn't speak english and we didn't speak japanese but it was awesome. Ended the night by having a group photo behind the hot plate holding a rugby ball. Great memories of a great city.

Although this restaurant doesn't seem to use it, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki often has noodles as one of the ingredients. Also, since Hiroshima is famous for its oysters, they are often topped with oysters. You can add seafood or meat to it as well. That's the kind of food I'm talking about. When the coronavirus is gone someday, please come to Hiroshima again. (I lived in Hiroshima for three years)
