He was a midfielder in the beginning of his career lol, a right winger. Then they converted him to left defense. He wasn't cb until he was past his prime, in his some around mid thirties although he did play as one occasionally before that. It is as a left defender he was at his best

@@visanion1361 He started as a right winger. both mid and defense. In those days they used to play 5 -3-2 to 3-5-2 in italy because of the libero system. That's why Maldini played mid and rb. but they changed him to lb and lm(rare) because of Tassoti. Maldini is ambidextrian with his feet (like my older brother, not as good as maldini lol). He played as lb up to he was maybe 32- 34. He was never as good as cb as lb. It doesn't mean he was shit as cb, on the contrary, he was great but as lb he was outstanding. Compare Carles Puyol, an a extremely good rb but that they made into a cb. Why? Because of his leadership skills. NOT saying that Puyol was as good as Maldini but the comparison is valid. Maldini on the other hand couldn't play as lb any longer that is why the put him in the middle. when they asked him why he wasnt running up and down any longer he answered that he was to old. shortly after they moved him. He must have 30 something at the time.

The funny thing is his father Cesare Maldini was born to Slovene parents who lived near Trieste and were italianized. Maldini is not their original surname. I think it was Maldič. No joke.

Pretty much every Italian has some kind of origins, for example I have a catalan surname because my grandpa was from Sardinia. It's ironic only to foreigners that don't know the history of the Italian peninsula.

I'm always taking the guy who earned the respect and admiration of R9, Zidane, Maradona (who said he deserved the Balon De oro in 2003), Pele (he called him the greatest Italian player in the 1994 world cup), Baggio ect over Franco Baresi. He could also swap between left back and centerback if the match needed it and was ambidextrous as well with a good technique for crossing. I deeply respect Baresi, but Paolo was a complete animal. Bro was stopping Cafu and Romario on that left side for 90+ minutes without getting a yellow card in that world cup final as an example. Insane athlete that was consistent and had longevity.

Them voting Baresi is not a good assessment of “who was better” because the Ultras never liked him as a person (because Maldini was always questioning their morals/behavior and therefore wasn’t very close with them). Don’t forget these are the same people that insulted Maldini on his retirement day, and trust me it was not because they think Baresi was a greater player lol. Instead you should listen to what managers like Sacchi, Capello ect have said about them, who actually trained them and judge them as players rather than individuals, players who have played against them, or with them. The reality was that they were both so amazing and crucial in their primes, but for me personally/based on assessments Maldini was superior because he refined his defensive and technical qualities in different positions as he got older, his athleticism was superior, he was more versatile, he played in 3 football generations and lasted until age 41 and was fairly consistent despite knee issues. Every Italian will tell you, including players like Baggio, Cannavaro, Nesta, Del Piero, Totti ect that Maldini was the best. So, who tf cares what some angry Ultras think brother.
