Exactly, Peter women and not just sexually (although he obviously had a deep appreciation for the female form and feminine energy) ToN had a lot of romantic lyrics and literally wax poetic about a sweaty boob (Love You To Death) without being vulgar; believe me most of us don't feel sexy with boob sweat in any context but he makes even the sweatiest-titted woman feel like a beauty with that lyric lol! The band also treated groupies well. That is the exception rather than the rule sadly, a GOOD portion of musicians are disrespectful or downright gross with groupies/women in general. I hate when people say Peter was misogynistic because they clearly don't have a fucking clue what misogyny looks like. It's certainly out there, but the extreme feminists often see problems where there are none. The world could benefit from more men who regard women in the way Peter did. He still could be masculine and enthrall a woman sexually without being a brute pig, which is apparently a difficult balance to strike for some guys lol. He isn't even my type physically but I was attracted to him as a person. There is a reason women have always loved him beyond being a famous frontman.

Peter wasn't Baritone. Not even a Bass Baritone. He was a Natural Bass, which is a very rare vocal type. Possibly the rarest. He was the definition of Metal. He was Big, Buff, Bass voiced and played a Bass Guitar, which he made look the size of a Ukulele We miss you Pete 🤘

@@StaticYonder I'm no expert, but the reason I know that term, "Basso Profundo", Is because I was a guitar major in college and every music major had to be in the chorus, and I was singled out for being the only one able to audibly sing a low D (the one immediately below guitar low E). They talked me into taking a voice minor course, and the prof told me I was a Basso Profundo. I have no idea if that is technically true, but I can tell you Peter could get way deeper than me with real projection.

Something fun to note is that Josh Silver contributed alot to the low end of the band, sharing rhythm duties with Pete as well, in addition to his Snyth work. you can tell as Petes tone was more on the mid range side of things, while Josh filled out the rest of the low end playing chords of keyboard. It's a unique set up. The interesting (and cool thing) about Type O is that they have a whole band kind of sound. Though Pete was the primary composer, the music isnt focused on one instrument, but rather balanced between all the instruments. Keep up the great work! No suggestions, because, look at the comments!

Early on, the band decided that they didn't want any of their instruments to sound like they traditionally should. Pete's bass would sound like a guitar, Kenny's guitar would sound like a keyboard, and Josh's keyboard would sound like a bass and guitar. Of course, not every song followed this plan, but thematically, the music makes more "sense" when you know how they originally structured the sonic landscape of Type O.

Peter Steele was a pretty substantial bass player. He may not have been the most technically proficient, but he came up with great melodies and harmonies with his bass parts and had a very heavy sound, especially by using power chords with his distorted sound. He is truly missed !

I really look up to Peter Steele, not just cause I’m 5’8 💀 but because I’ve always seen myself in him. I’ve always had a freakishly deep natural bass voice and I actually sound very similar to him. Pretty cool videos and channel you have here. As a bass player myself of almost 30 yrs., I appreciate it when the spotlight is put on various bassists. Still, if I may make a suggestion here, it would be cool to also focus on awesome bass players from other genres of rock music (if you wish to remain mainly focused on rock music), not just the ones seen regularly (ad nauseam) in many other bass player videos. Pretty nice work my friend! Pete is my bass hero for a number of reasons! Late 2000s till he died, he most reliably used 2 Peavey Tour 750 heads with Peavey Max Bass preamps in front of each one. One to the wedge and one to the main cabs. You nailed the pedals...the signal chain is anyone's guess. I have this very set up, FINALLY. As far as signal chain, I use a Boss LS-2 in order to have a split signal with one being clean. Those boss guitar pedals clip all the lows, that's why people assume he had two chains. I combine them into a Peavey 410. If I had two cabs and two heads and preamps I'd run em separate I guess. Tour heads aren't that hard to find...but the preamps sure were!

Saw Type O Negative at Donington 1996, on the second stage, saw them a couple of times at the London Astoria. Didn't see them again until a festival I went to in the Netherlands around 2006(?), Last time I saw Pete Steel play was with Carnivore in a small club in London (2007 or 08 maybe). I was again at a festival in the Netherlands in 2010 when I heard the news that Pete had died... I was pretty gutted. RIP. Always been my favourite band since I heard their Black sabbath cover whilst I was still at school. Great video dude.

Thank you for a very interesting video. I have always loved the bass tones of Peter Steele. I would love to add one curious detail of his gear. I happened to be watching his perfomance from the side of the stage at Wacken open air in 2007 as i was performing the same day there with Stratovarius. After the concert i went to spy his gear a little and ended up chatting with his bass tech. He gave me a couple of the picks peter was using at the time. They were very thin fender stock picks. Almost as thin as paper, which hints to that he used very light strings for BEAD-tuning, which pick up distortion much better. But what i found especially interesting was that all of the picks had drilled holes in center of them for extra grip. At this point Peter was visibly not in good shape so i was left to wonder a bit if this was his actual preference or did his tech´s just find the absolute easiest piece of plastic for him to play with. i still have those picks as mementos ( I can post pictures if you like) to remind me of one of the great original voices on the electric bass. R.I.P Peter Steele.

Yes, on the Dean Markley strings. I had a habit of destroying my two lowest strings, especially the low, "E," string, and, no, I never use a pick. I carve grooves into the pickup covers, the end of the fretboard, and the last 3 to 5 frets, if they're not SS frets. My uncle Bob, a great guitarist, playing everything from jazz and fusion, to extreme death metal (though only Christian lyrics), who started playing music in tbe late 1960's. Upon seeing my three basses all having deep grooves dug into them by three strings, and witnessing me snap two low, "E," strings during one show rehearsal, as he became our fulltime sound engineer. Looking wide-eyed at my basses, watching me play with three fingers and my thumb on my quite above average size and strength hands, crushing the strings, which often produced sound, like John Entwistle, by being smashed into the frets and bouncing back, then noticing that despite my ferocity of playing, I barely used the onboard compression on my Ampeg SVT 4 Pro, and no other compression whatsoever, he was shocked. I played so hard that I brutalized my instruments, snapped thick strings of every band like dry noodles, played slap and pop with equal aggression, though only about 5% of our shows used this, and sometimes I, "strummed," the strings using all my fingertips, front and back to play notes, chords, and create percussive sounds, using my whole arm, bending at the elbow and shoulder the provide the deep strumming motion (like a few punk guitarists). This technique would tear up the skin on the backs of my fingers, causing my to bleed, and be splattering blood everywhere. My uncle, who'd seen hundreds of shows from 60's and 70's rock, glam, punk, metal, whatever, and had pretty much seen it all, started referring to me, his nephew, as Beast or the Beast. He said thunderfingers was already taken and does not go far enough to explain my playing style or personality that comes through and how I play. That I can play with that ferocity and not need compression to control the Dynamics told him that I was extremely locked into what I was doing. I appreciated it. But it did seem odd that my uncle, who had already being a pastor 4 multiple congregations was calling his nephew Beast. Anyways, after a Type O Negative show in Milwaukee, I managed to speak to Peter for a few minutes after the show, and he was into learning about and talking about gear, so when I asked him questions about what are you was playing and why he actually was interested in answering my questions. And we had a common reason for using B Dean Markley cryogenic strings, because we both had history of breaking strings an inordinate amount of time. And bass strings are not cheap. So we both discovered that the frequent breakage of the thickest strings on the bass, even when two down and reducing the tension, was made much less a frequent problem by using the Dean Markley cryogenic strings. It is also more common for Markley strings to be offered in a wider combination of stream diameters and they will actually make custom string diameters to fit their customers needs. I get a combination of string gauges that I am the only person in the history of the company to order this particular combination of string gauge sizes and it actually has my name on that sell strings in there database. So I can go to pretty much any store that Carrie's those strings and just tell them my name and order that name set of strings from the look at me and laugh and tell them no seriously that's what you need to do. And they are usually pretty shocked when this unknown musician has his own custom set of strings. So I apologize for the extremely long-winded, verbose, boring, yammering just to simply confirm that at least on that tour that. Of time he was using Dean Markley cryogenics and that's he did break more strings than the average bassist which isn't surprising considered that he was the pretty large powerful man.
