There are plenty of us that actually were educated in the US about how brutal the Poles had it during WW2 ( to say nothing of their Soviet bloc year as well). They know atrocities up close and personal. You know their families don't forget the horrors they have gone through as a people.

@@rockyfjord3753 Poland's human casualties in ww2 was the highest in the world comparing to number of citizens. The number of casualties was about 6.2 mln. That was for every 1000 people 220 of them died during the war from both German and Soviet aggressors and occupation. But the biggest problem was that not only the highest casualties compared to number of citizens, but in that number was as well the highest percentage of high educated people: doctors, lawyers, professors, the high rank (lieutenant and above) militaries and police officers. Only the Soviet Union murdered in series of executions 21.768 polish high rank POW after 1939. Whole families who was able to survive under Soviet occupation of Poland during ww2 and after was send deep in Russia's Syberia and Kazakhstan, many of them never came back.

@Mruuuczek No you're right I should learn more about it. But I've seen many people blame Ukraine for a lot of elements and it triggered me. The normal Ukranian people don't deserve war. Either side can create disinformation, but you have to keep in mind Russia/KGB has a strong history with spinning facts. They even have disinformation farms to create content for social. Geopolitics is never simple and in the end of the day, we as a public don't know everything. Even when we study/deep dive into certain topics, we can still be lied to.

I am Polish and fully aware of how flawed we can be, but this time around we seem to have gotten our shit together and it feels good. Almost all of the help is provided and coordinated by ordinary citizens and local self-govt. I don't think I know one person, who has not chipped in in one way or another. Yep, it is impressive to take in 1.2 million refugees (so far) without setting up a single refugee camp. But it is the "small" efforts that make me tear up occasionally - for example numerous publishing houses here uploaded children's books in the Ukrainian language, so the parenst of our little guests can download them for free and provide some comfort to the kids. After all, nobody travelled with books. A friend of mine is hosting a family with kids; the youngest one arrived with a small family member - a hamster. When another friend learned about this, she ran to a pet store to buy a proper cage and all things hamster. She explained the situation to the shop assistant and when she got to the check-out counter, a stranger who had overheard the conversation, tapped her on the shoulder and offered to pay for all the items. These tiny gestures tell me, that most people simply need small acts of selfless kindness. We Poles are always at one another's throats, always arguing about more or less everything. Being offered the chance to help out our neighbors in need helps us heal, cleanse our souls, remember what really counts. We have the refugees to thank for that, for making us better people. Слава Україні!

Beautiful. I grew up in Glasgow. I remember being a teenager when the EU travel rights opened up and the Poles arrived. Integration into young Scottish society came naturally to a bunch of folks who had a raw sense of humour and spent their weekends having endless heartfelt conversations in their front room while wearing tracksuits, drinking vodka, and listening to techno. 20 years later now there's a bunch of Glaswegian kids with at least one Polish name doing the same again. Dressed better than we were, no doubt. I have spent the last 10 years telling people that Poland will prove the media narrative woefully wrong should things go wrong in Ukraine. The media here has trivialized the support Poland has given Ukrainians since 2014 in the name of forcing multiculturalism upon them - which they politely declined, as is their right. They have also been pulling more than their weight in NATO and in the provision of geopolitical thinkers that call it as they see it and prepare accordingly. "Without a single refugee camp" - Dziękuję Ci! ps: If you want to come over here and fly our warplanes or steal our jobs again you are most welcome :)

@@seanpatrick1243 I've heard that migrants who weren't greetened in Poland were economic migrants, not war migrants whose lifes are at risk. I don't think it had to do anything with ethnicity or religion, just not every country has to welcome imigrants when they arrive at the border. Also there was only a few immigrants who wanted to live in Poland since it's not so rich country (comparing to other EU countries) and it's average wages and welfare spending wasn't that big yet. Now we unfortunately have to do with, in my opinion, far more serious scenario. People are often times going through hell and dying. It would be a shame if we didn't help now.

@@mariarusek1851 I'm speaking of Syrian refugees. Was there no war there? The EU quotas were established taking into account each country's ability to take them in. Poland's quota was lower still because of PiS resistance to take any at all. And they refused to meet even that small quota. That said, I am still very grateful that Poland is taking in so many Ukrainians. And their economy will benefit from it in short order as they have been trying to get Poles to return from the UK and EU for some years now having a shortage of construction workers etc. Now all they need is a new government.

@@seanpatrick1243 Most of the western countries are struggling/struggled with economic migrant crisis caused by crowds of arabic people rushing into the country. The huge majority of the migrants were men (as opposed to Ukrainian refugees that are almost all women and children). Arabs don't want to assimilate with western world culture and traditions, they don't want to work, they mostly want to live off the generous social systems that are granted. They have caused a lot of problems and people in hindsight see that this wasn't a really good idea to let them in. Polish people and the polish government are not dumb and ignorant, they learn from other peoples mistakes and react accordingly. This isn't my biased opinion, those are the facts supplied by sociodemographic and etnological studies focusing on migrant situations in modern world.

When you are a super power. You have certain rights to look after your interests and unfortunately when you feel threatened by neighbors who disregard your concern. Ultimatums are given. But when egos ( Zalensky has a huge one) get in the way, and the media and the west praise him and back his refusal to compromise. Bloodshed ensues. Its just heartbreaking. I am Polish and I welcome all Ukrainians to our country. They are our brothers and sisters, and they worked in Poland previously so there is no problem. They are the real refugees too, because they send only women and children to safety but the men stay and fight for their country. This is unlike the 2015 crisis where 70% were young able bodied men, seeking better paying jobs. Ukrainian men stay and fight, and we Poles respect them for this, and offer shelter to their mothers, wifes and children.

Short example from yesterday. There was a story growing fast on polish internet. Some woman invited Ukrainian family to her place. She was working hard to prepare everything with full fridge and everything prepared. They came and said that they don't like the standard and walked away. Of course she wrote a post on Facebook which people were sharing like crazy how Ukrainians are ungrateful. At first place I thought it was a fake but it was true, but this family weren't a refugees but they were living in Poland for some time and they wanted to use an opportunity for their profit. Of course this lady wrote another post when she get this information but try to guess how many people from those who saw 1st post, saw the second? That's why especially Ukrainians should work together to not let others ruin how Poles think about those which really need help. I'm happy that you're safe!

Now I'm a war refugee in Poland. I can afford everything I need here, but a little confused because my Polish is minimal. But everyone is soooo sweet here and helpful, I'm eternally grateful for that. So, since I'm not in as desperate of a situation as many others I am donating as much as I can to Ukrainians that need it more. I think you're right on about the way Ukrainian people vs other refugees are treated. It's simply that there's much less of assimilation needed because we're from the same continent and more common values. Ukrainian people are not completely like Germans or French or Spanish in many attitudes and behaviors, but very similar to Polish people. I'm sure Ukrainian people will be most ok and home in the Slavic countries in the EU! So my suggestion is to stick with them because the mutual understanding in languages and lifestyles.

@@xxx041189xxx Thanks for your reply. Here in Hungary (with a population of 10 million) we have received more than 200 thousand refugees, which is more than the capacity of all the hotels in the country. The solution is that initially people are housed in unused school buildings or community centres for a few nights, and then volunteers and charities pick them up and provide long-term accommodation for them; or they are provided a free train or flight to anywhere they want in Europe. It is very likely that you will have to do the same in Estonia soon. Best wishes!

I had a friend of mine who had two young children with his wife before divorce. He told me how very difficult it was to live with his wife because she had severe mental problems. Despite that she had custody of the children. I pointed out to him that divorce made his life a lot easier, but it meant that his children lived only with a severely depressed woman rather than also having a mentally healthy person living with them. As you mentioned, there is a difference between the Poles' approach to Ukrainians and other immigrants. It is known that there are emotions now, but in fact Poles are very helpful when someone is in an emergency. The problem with the approach to immigrants from other countries was that after accepting them, it turned out that they did not want to work, they had large social claims. Poles are a hardworking nation and know the value of a job that allows you to live a good life but is not easy. The demanding approach of immigrants from the Middle East naturally aroused reluctance by Poles. Moreover, Poles cannot stand when other countries impose the necessity to admit economical immigrants. In the case of immigrants on the Belarusian border, the idea was to stop this practice(bringing people to the border), and it succeeded in part. I think that accepting immigrants requires a lot of wisdom, unfortunately Poland has been very blackened in the media because it relied on its wisdom and assessment of the situation. Currently, everyone praises Poland and is surprised how we help immigrants. It does not surprise me. I am also not surprised that in some time there will be expectations of immigrants, when they become established, that they have to earn for themselves just like other citizens of this country. Helping wisely is not easy.

I'm proud of Poland; I'm proud of Ukraine. I'm also proud of those Russians who protest against Putin's insanity. The only ones I'm not proud of are my own people in the West who are too timid to stand up to Putin. I understand that they are afraid of a nuclear conflict. No one wants WWIII. But you can't let a tyrant rule the world just by cringing every time he hovers his finger over the nuclear button. If that's all it takes, then evil has won.

@@procurepro That's shocking. As was the anti-Polish sentiment about the time of Brexit (I believe partly due to Russian backed social media influencers). I have always liked the hard working Polish people I met working in the UK in restaurants and hotels and so on. I have been away from the UK (in Santa Fe, NM) for 30 years now - could not even vote against Brexit because I had been away more than 15 years. Am ashamed of England for leaving the EU. They thought Britain could stand alone, not realizing that it was being part of the EU that had made Britain so wealthy after struggling economically in the decades prior to joining the EU.
