I find Pompey is very overlooked. Reading about his triumphal return to Rome the descriptions are extremely illustrious. I am pretty sure it wasn't until very recently that we got a book solely describing the life and career of Pompey as a man and general. I think he is quite fascinating and seems to have not known where to throw his hand in when the civil war was about to kick off, he seems to have been slightly unable to think for himself and the senators may have fully casted his lot for him.

Crassus is Licinius no?
@LuisAldamiz4 жыл бұрын
@@gsius2346 - I think he means Lucullus (many people carrying the Licinius surname): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucullus "Despite his continuous success in battle, Lucullus had still not captured either one of the monarchs. In 66 BC, with the majority of Lucullus' troops now openly refusing to obey his commands, but agreeing to defend Roman positions from attack, the senate sent Pompey to take over Lucullus' command, at which point Lucullus returned to Rome". There's also Publius Licinius Crassus, conqueror of Aquitania, who was the son of Marcus Licinius Crassus, vanquisher of Spartacus. Both died in the war against Parthia. They were all part of the gens Licinia apparently.

I get that Crassus and Pompey and most Roman senators were fabulously wealthy. But Wasn’t Caesar by far the least wealthy of the Triumvires? He grew up in the Suburra after all, and took out huge amounts of loans, and didn’t Crassus put up his ransom from the pirates? I would love to hear a life of Caesar series from you.
@ThersitestheHistorian3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Caesar was by far the least wealthy of the three, but he supplied the political cunning and oratorical ability that Pompey and Crassus lacked. It wasn't obvious until later that he also added a great deal of military skill to the trio. I am planning to do a series on Caesar later this year, probably divided into several parts.

@@ThersitestheHistorian please do!!! I would love to hear your opinion on whether Caesar was aiming to be a tyrant from the start or if he was merely pursuing his rights as a patrician Roman stymied at every turn by Cato and Bibulus.

People don't realize that, Pompey's was just as formidable as Alexander The Great, Napoleon, Hannibal and yes, even Julius Caesar. In fact, it could be argued that Pompey was "out generaling" Caesar for most of the campaign. Making Caesar's victory all the more impressive.

Reference to Pompey from anti war protest during Mexican American war 1846 “Some good men have attained the title, an Alfred, a Peter, a Charlemagne; but most have been great in crime and blood; an Alexander, a Pompey, a Ceasar, a Herod, a Louis, a Henry, a Frederic, a Charles, a Bonaparte. They were great in many things; great, perhaps, in ability, great in resolution of will, great in means of influence, and striking in their results; but little in the elements of a truty great character; little in honesty, in truth, in love, mean, selfish, crafty, cruel, and implacable. How much human gore to dye their purple robes of royalty! We want civilians, not swordsmen ; Catos, not Caesars, nor Syllas at the head of Christendom and nations. We do not wish to emulate the errors of Europe, their history does not welcome repeat! “

Not much of a insult to lose to Caesar tbh. It's like losing to Alexander. Despite Vercingetorix's defeat in Alesia, I think he was still a great general considering he was working with untrained savage Gauls. Any lesser man and Vercingetorix would have won in Gaul and Pompey would have won at Pharsalus; Caesar was just that good.
