Personally, I think the whole "privilege" thing is being taken too far. I'm never going to be embarrassed because I'm a white male who grew up in a nice family. Though I realize people have it harder than me in certain aspects of their lives, I think THAT'S what should be focused on: helping their needs instead of bashing "privileged" folks. It seems like we've spent so much time convincing people that we're accepting of everyone that we've gone full circle and started ostracizing those who have always been accepted simply because we've "had it easy". Now, obviously, white straight people have, well... had it easy in specific aspects of our lives. But that makes up a noticeably small portion of our lives. We're not completely different people bc our ethnicity and sexual preference is considered more "normal" than someone else's, This kind of "calling out" of people isn't beneficial in the effort of bringing us together, and my "privilege" is something I refused to be embarrassed about.

Why did you say folks
@1965hannah
@1965hannah 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah you shouldn't be ashamed, just aware, and you are and that's good. But being aware also means accepting that you've had an advantage, and you shouldn't be bashed for it. And the fact that you think it's only a small part of your life shows you aren't truly aware. Also the fact that you think it's gone too far, shows your ignorance to a real issue that doesn't affect you.
@ladynoluck
@ladynoluck 8 жыл бұрын
But no one is asking you to be ashamed. They are asking you to be aware of the advantages that you are given by birth and circumstance, which many people don't enjoy. These advantages span from feeling accepted to feeling safe, but many people don't think of those as advantages. They think of them as rights, but they are really privileges. I am white and not poor, so I have never felt unsafe walking through the TSA line, nor have ever worried about people thinking I was committing a crime or a criminal just by looking at me (police, store owners, etc.). I never had to work a service job to feed and shelter myself, and I have had to opportunity to go to college and then go to graduate school. Those are all privileges that I have simply because I'm white and not poor. They are not rights, and they are not accessible options to many people. Ignoring that is why people have been bringing up privilege a lot recently. People are quick to say things like, "Just try harder," "Race doesnt matter," and "You got same-sex marriage, so what more do you need?" Those are privileged statements that ignore the inherent inequalities of not having the privileged majority identities, such as but not limited to the daily fear of harm. You are misconstruing this discussion as an attack on you when it's not that at all. It's an attack on a system that grants people privilege, not based on merit or their own choices, but based on being a certain race, a certain gender identity, a certain sexual orientation, a certain income level, a certain family style, and more. The fact that people are miscontruing the discussion of privilege as an attack on them is what makes having this important discussion unnecessarily difficult. tl;dr : You aren't being asked to be ashamed; just be aware and apply that awareness in helpful ways.

There have been scientific studies done where identical resumes one with a white sounding name like "Andy Burke" for example and one with a black sounding name like Tyrell Jackson where sent to the same 13 companies. White dude got 6-7 follow ups and I recall 2 interviews, black dude got one follow up. How is this not privilege? Same qualifications just the name was different, they hadn't even met the guys yet and automatically the white dude is advantaged. Defend these actions and go.

Because it's used as a way to invalidate what you say, invalidate your experiences, and invalidate how much you are struggling in whatever aspect. It can be just rude. If I go up to a gay guy living in Indonesia, and say he is privileged because he is male, that's just rude, because most likely, that 'privilege' won't help him from being stoned to death for being gay- i'm acting like the fact he's male means he's "privileged", and that word entails assumptions like he has an easy life, when he does not in fact have an easier life than a black trans gay muslim whatever living in America.

the unpaid internship is a privilege because you are able to spend time working without receiving money and are working towards a wanted career. People who have less money are not able to take an internship like this because if they didn't work for money as often as often as possible (multiple jobs), they would be homeless or have no food, heat, electricity etc. To not have to worry about finances enough to be able to take an unpaid job for the experience of it is definitely a privilege.

I am not trapped in my country, caught in the middle if a war, or being tortured for information by a crazy dictator. I am not being held against my will. My family didn't abandoned me as a baby, and I was born at a time of flourishing technology. I would say I am pretty privileged, how about you. I had and still have access to running water, electricity, the Internet, public transportation, more food than I can possibly eat, and every single source of knowledge in the world. However, since I am a gay, non-white female who works as a barista, I scored a 37/100. 10/10 would take again 💯

People act like its bad that we're "privileged". Life is different, it's okay. It's doesn't make you a bad person to be born into a rich white family and it doesn't make you a bad person to be born into a poor situation pretty much the exact opposite of that one. We all come from different places and all that matters is who we are from there and where we go. There's no way of controlling where you come from so just accept everyone and stop making assumptions of people based on that. Base it on how they are to you and to other people. If someone's kind and a good person to other people and tries to do good that's all that should matter. We should not let life desicions and backgrounds define our image of another human beings. Because in the end we're all just people struggling to be happy and we're all just as deep and whole as another person. It's just some people have a harder struggle than others. And we shouldn't hold that against anybody.

Yep! It's definitely no ones fault that they were born into ____ family or _____ sexuality, and we should all embrace ourselves (and each other) for who we are. The problems only arise when people fail to see that privilege exists and some people get it tougher than others. We need to be able to see differences and help each other!

No, it wants people to sit back and think about the different experiences/disadvantages that we all may have in society based on XYZ, and to work on listening and showing understanding/empathy toward each other. People that say things like that are the reason tests like this are still relevant. Being white is a privilege. Being a man is a privilege. Being a person who does not believe that is true is a privilege in itself. That does not mean that this test was great, but it does make people refocus on an issue we'd rather forget. It isn't bad to be privileged, it simply enables you to reach out to others more, to change more, because the only way to equalize society is for privileged people to actively fight for and with those with less.

race, sexuality, gender, all of that does not matter. Fairness and equality is what you make for yourself not what others decide for you. My family immigrated to the great country known as America and we were not "privileged", we simple worked hard and didn't whine about how difficult everything was. know my father retired after serving over 24 years in US Navy as a Commander, my mother is a civil engineer, both my sisters are in the Air Force Academy and I have everything ahead of me being a straight A student. Anyone who blames their race, sexuality, or Gender for their shortcomings is a coward because you can overcome anything.

I got a score of 37 People tell me I'm privileged just because I'm white(but I'm more than half Macedonian), I went to a private school, and my parents have always had a little more money than we needed. That's just what you see on the outside of me. I know there are people that have it worse than me. I do not consider myself more able than anyone else out there. My parents work hard for the money we have. They work so much actually, to the point where I rarely see them on a daily basis. I have three learning disabilities, and I struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Depression. I am in the process of finding out if I have Anorexia, OCD, and Schizophrenia. Just because I was born with a color of skin and got a better chance than some doesn't mean I haven't struggled. Just because someone is white and maybe has a little more money than they need doesn't mean they have a "good" life. Please stop looking at people's surfaces and judging them for that, because there's so

The questions are really american and adult oriented. I've been mocked for my accent in english by other french people, for exemple. And in France no one has a car in highschool or only for the last 5 months cause the driver licence is for people above eighteen only. But I have been really chocked to see "I'm a man" in the list. I do not feel less privileged because of my gender. I'm glad and proud to be a woman. The problem is the negative reactions you face because of being a woman and some (yes, very privileged) women never experience those reactions. And by the way, there's no questions about health and hygiene issues. The goal of that test is interesting, though.

If I took this test, I would be pretty high. I'm a White, Christian straight male in the upper middle class. However, I have no guilt of that. I hate it when people judge me for being privileged. My family and I have worked hard to allow me to get to where I am. I don't look down at other people for not being as lucky at me but I'm not going to look down on myself.

+Vanessa _____ I see what you are saying with how some people work really hard to be successful and get nowhere and how some people don't try at all and become successful. However, my family really worked hard. My great grandfather was a coal miner just making enough to get my grandfather through school. My grandfather became a sheriff and started a scuba diving business. My father worked at that scuba shop, worked throughout college and made his way throughout the ranks in the Air Force. He now flies planes for delta. In three generations my family went from the bottom of the economic scale to the upper middle class. That's why I believe in capitalism so much. It may not be a guarantee to wealth and may not be a quick solution all the time but it served my family well. It makes me believe that if I get a good education and if I work hard, I can become successful and allow my children to become even more successful.

Yesssss. I'm a "minority with two strikes" (Hispanic and gay), and, while I can't speak for everyone, what irritates me is people who think whites are "out to get them." Racism is found across all nations/ethnicities/cultural backgrounds, and while I have felt discriminated against, I hold THAT person accountable. Not their skin color. There's also a double standard. If a white person doesn't help their fellow man, they're racist. And if they do help, they're being condescending and doing "charity" and people respond cynically.

Want to hear a fucked up thing. I came into this video thinking I was very privilege. All of my African American friends say I am. All of my Native American friends say I am. All of my Transgender friends say I am. And honestly I guess I agreed, because I've been told by the media and people around me I am. So I go and take this test because I was curious. Still expecting to score high, I was taking the test I realized how not privileged I was. Only two sections where I was able to check boxes "yes I am white" and "Yes I am a man". At the end of the test I got a 27/100 which was under privileged. So basically what I am trying to say is dont let anyone, not your parents, not your friends, not the media tell you something that puts you in a box. People put me in a box just because I was a white male, but in reality I have just as much struggles as the next person. Dont ever judge a book by its cover. And if you preach that, dont ever judge a privilege of a white, male based on his skin and sex because my friends I learned and you learned today that sometimes not the case. Good Day.

I don't think the quiz is a good representation of "privilege." I took it and scored a 51 yet there were quite a few things that were left out. For example, my family life is horrible (which could be for many different reasons) but the questions asked about only certain scenarios like "were you bullied for your sexual orientation."

If I were to do this same experiment I would have, maybe one or two less white people to not single out the black person. Not a majority though because it wouldn't be realistic to demographics. Lastly, I'd make sure at least fifty percent are narcissistic so we have a relatable video, topping it off with the cherry of a broad title.

In order for everyone to ACTUALLY start off equal, we’d need to be shipped off to a specific school when we’re born where everyone goes because some people start better off because of their parents didn’t do drugs or finished their education or didn’t have them in high school. Some are worse off because of those things. So everyone starting off equal is unrealistic. Privilege isn’t something that should exist (if it even does) but people are still gonna start off better than others. What next? You want a time machine?

I got 19/100. Yes this test is mostly for Americans and it does need to include things like immigration status, domestic violence, and mental health, but it’s still a good test to take to reflect on being thankful. Yes I’ve had a hard life, but I own a phone, I can watch this video, I go to bed warm and now safe. The word “privileged” seems bad to most, but think of it as a thankful scale. Although I didn’t score much I am thankful to God every day that I can even live in this country. We don’t worry about a war happening a few miles away, there’s churches, soup kitchens, and our government that provides food. Gosh, I’m so thankful to be able to even comment on a video. I’m thankful I can breath without pain, that my ptsd is slowly getting better. Just be thankful and stop harassing other people in the comments please, it’s gross.

No heterosexual means (of a person) sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex. It has nothing to do with media. Actually nowadays gay people are more prominently shown in media because people are told they should feel guilty for being hetero. This is not a good thing and privilege is not real. Im white and straight and all of those things have happened to me. Discrimination is a 2 way street. And So is racism in general.

wow I got a 55 but there has been times I couldn't leave the house, been really depressed, I have anxiety, etc. That doesn't mean I don't understand my privilege but the quiz is inaccurate. munstercookies her point is that being a waiter is not the lowest ranking job possible. Is someone who is a janitor higher up that a waiter? No. I know people who work their asses off cleaning houses only getting paid 50 bucks for cleaning a giant house after some rich people have a party. But they didn't grt acknowledged in the quiz. The quiz is inaccurate.

Nux Lee Shouldn’t this be a good thing? Shouldn’t the response be, “oh wow, I’m luckier than I thought, that’s awesome”? But no. You want undeserved pity. Because you’d rather be doted on because you have depression or anxiety, rather than focusing on things like the fact that you typed those sentences on an expensive computer or other piece of technology. Privilege is not a bad thing. I scored a 70. Lack of privilege is a bad thing. No one deserves to be ridiculed because they have too much or too little, but I’d rather be privileged than not. And being from better circumstances than most is not something to complain about.
