In 2021, a total of 1,093 motor vehicle recalls were submitted in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That’s up 23% in just one year. Financial experts say one reason why automakers’ earnings multiples are lower than other companies is to do with the frequency of those recalls. That is especially true of legacy manufacturers such as Ford, GM, Stellantis, BMW, Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen and Hyundai. Meanwhile, new automakers like Rivian and Tesla present unique challenges and have contributed to recalls becoming more common. Other recalls have been of the deadly serious variety, such as the Ford Pinto that burst into flames in the 1970s, and the more recent experience of Takata, the airbag maker whose products appeared in automakers’ models from 2002 to 2015.

I have been a master tech for over 25 years, I remember when Ford issued a recall on many of their trucks, and the recall stated something to do with the cruise control. I would get so many customers in my independent shop that disregarded that recall because they said they don’t really use their cruise control, but it was actually a brake fluid pressure switch that would leak and short circuit potentially causing fires.

If you pause at 2:24, you'll notice that certain manufacturers aren't on the list like Toyota for example. That's because they take quality control very seriously and haven't changed this idea in a very long time and thus why a good number of vehicles on the road are either foreign or just made in Japan. Let's also understand that not every vehicle is perfect, but like another person has posted, when the upper echelon leadership of a company decides to cut corners or not invest in their quality control, then it'll affect customers and as a result, this will cause customers to possibly lose out of money because they have to take time out of their busy life to get a recall performed because the automaker decided to be careless and go strictly for profit.

We need better classification of recalls, now that OTA (over the air) fixes are a thing. A recall for which nothing needs to be done, auto applied OTA, is different from one requiring a dealer visit. By quite a margin. In turn, a dealer-required software change is quite different from something that requires a tranny replace, etc. It's good to have visibility on such details.

Every manufacturer times recalls strategically. You have to identify the problem, understand it, design a solution, and then build up inventory of the solution and validate it and introduce it into production as well. So if you are in that process and someone else announces a recall you could easily pull your recall forward and have less inventory built up and be able to roll out the fix to customers more slowly, but if it saves stock price it makes sense. Probably some of them wait a bit too to see if they can use this trick.

I worked and still work on embedded systems in transportation field, also have ton of friends working in different corporations - a quite recurring problem - it is because management always wants to tell what you should do and rarely listens to the development teams, who have actual knowledge of the system. They usually want to band-aid anything that can't be done before the deadline hits. Let's be clear, systems became so overcomplicated it should take more time to verify that everything works as it should. Every vehicle should be tested like planes, yet managers want to cut corners and get bonuses. Why? They don't care about long term profits of the company as corporationism in US killed employee loyalty we knew from pre 2000s. They gonna get their bonuses for speeding up the project and move to the other company in different field, before fire starts, while engineers will stay after hours to spend even more time and corporation money to actually fix the issue.

Seems to me 2 things need to be in place, if more than one automaker uses parts from the same company they should all chip in money to do quality control testing and if you want data from that product you need to pay into it. Then they need to start recall centers with qualified mechanics and dealerships, if it is a easy fix. have a mechanic do it and the cost gets passed onto the automaker, the automaker saves money by not having to ship a car back and fourth. The same way why CVS and Walgreens both do prescriptions cause its located everywhere.

Probably to raise economies of scale & reduce costs, my country's public bus operators are having fewer different models & variants in their fleets now than before. For instance we have ~1600x Volvo B9TLs, forming ~65% of the country's double decker buses. Imagine how many buses would be taken out of action if the B9TL was recalled for whatever reason & how much capacity will be lost in the public transport network as a result. Also read that Washington DC's Metro lost almost 60% of its capacity when the 7000 series of rolling stock were recalled (since they formed such a big proportion of their fleet, having replaced 3 older series)

As a technician, I hate to do a recall and warranty because they pay less to Technicians and dealerships are very smart to take advantage of it from manufacturers if the tech is paid for 20/ hrs, the Dealership charges them 25-27 or more hrs from manufacturers. Why technician is satisfying to your customer where manufactured are the mistakes to produce a problem with the vehicle

Recalls happen when 1. Manufacturers Cheaps out on Research and Development amd churns a half assed product. 2. Manufacturers are Using cheaper parts 3. production are rushed due to an idiot boss rushing to meet quotas 4. Factory workers who don’t have a pride of their work.

The problem with Ford right now is that they've been cutting corners for years and they have a pretty poor culture at their factories pushing quantity parts for short term profits over quality.
@theholt2ic219
@theholt2ic219 Жыл бұрын
Ford, GM, and especially Chrysler make probably the poorest quality of vehicles. There is a reason why they sit on dealership lots far long. It’s been tough if you want a Toyota because a lot of them don’t have many models at the lot. And across the street is a Chevy dealer full with cars on the lot. The investors just don’t care about quality anymore because GM and Ford actually made some good cars in the 90s and early 2000s. Now it’s just about profit, cutting costs, cheap parts and materials and fix it later. They blame everything and everyone else except themselves. Toyota and Honda did themselves a favor by building good cars in the 90s and 2000s. everyone remembers that good old reliable civic/Corolla/Accord/Camry and buy the new models.

I still daily drive analog cars that are 40+ years old. They are cheap, they run forever, and they have style and body lines that you will never see again. I don’t think I have ever spent more than $6k on a car and my cost of operation is really as low as I want it to be.. Tech encroached into every aspect of our life, i don’t believe that tech is necessary a value-add for automotive products except regarding safety and efficiency.. still, that can be done without adding a 20” tv on the center console.

to me these problems generally come with american vehicles like ford and rivian that is why i trust the japanese brands and i've also invested in some toyota stocks and i'm looking to buy tesla stocks but a friend of mine said Instead of trying to predict and prognosticate whether or not we’re going into a recession and precisely when it’s going to happen, a better strategy is simply having a portfolio that’s well prepared for any eventuality, that’s how some folks' been averaging 150K every 7week these past 4months according to Bloomberg.

What's get me is they always claim they tested the vehicles for millions of miles - but something is always breaking ( BMW, Audi, MB Etc ) and they can't seem to make cars reliable like the Japanese. I think they make these vehicle to fall apart after the warranty is over I wonder how long all these electric cars are really going to last when used in the real world not the Tesla Fan Boi world.

It is b/c all the mechanical issues come after your warranty runs out. That car is trash. I also LOVE how Hyundai/Kia are low on this list b/c they are not including the engine fire debacle they already have had to recall twice.
