Sir Richard Branson has cut a figure as a brash and rebellious impresario who took on big businesses with his larger-than-life personality, charm, and sheer guts. The Virgin Atlantic airline Branson started and grew from an industry underdog to a major international carrier is now at risk of collapsing. Branson's Virgin Group has several other businesses in industries that have all been hit hard by the coronavirus. His sparkling empire is taking hits on all sides from a global pandemic.
Correction (May 27, 2020): At 2:25, we initially stated that Virgin receives roughly $20 million a year in licensing royalties, but Virgin received licensing royalties of more than $100 million in 2019.

Branson's popularity has definitely declined in the UK. He was always known as being a success but now he's more known for suing the health service (which is a religion here), screwing up the InterCity East Coast rail contract (for the 3rd time) and not paying taxes here. We have a saying here "privatise the profit, nationalise the risk". People are very sick of companies wanting bailouts by taxpayers. Quite honestly if Virgin Atlantic collapses, so be it. Free markets and neoliberalism are always great for owners of big business until things turn sour.

2020 great news Michael Moore presents Planet of the Humans, a documentary that dares to say what no one else will this Earth Day - that we are losing the battle to stop climate change on planet earth because we are following leaders who have taken us down the wrong road - selling out the green movement to wealthy interests and corporate America. This film is the wake-up call to the reality we are afraid to face: that in the midst of a human-caused extinction event, the environmental movement’s answer is to push for techno-fixes and band-aids. It's too little, too late

Virgin won a deal not to pay any tax on their internet with a promise to improve the uk infrasture for their users. The problem was the equipment all their customers already had is capable of nearly delivering a 6 gbps connection. So Virgin didn't really need to do anything and got away with paying 0% tax.

Jack of all trades, master of none. I don't know what Richard Branson thought by getting into 100% capital intensive, low margin, super competitive businesses. If only he had focused on building a monopolistic business like Facebook, Amazon, or Google he would not need to be in every business just to have the Virgin brand out there. Only 1 or 2 businesses were enough.

Dunno why ppl are so salty about bailouts. Bailouts are loans. They have to be repaid with interest or gained by selling stock to the government. If the business venture is solid, governments should totally bailout the business and reap the profits for social programs. Case in point, the US bailout of banks during the last financial crisis was immensely profitable. All the banks repaid with interest.

Yep. People also dont understand bankruptcy either, yet love to talk about it. Bankruptcy means the company becomes owned by the creditors right? I dont get how this is a huge issue half the time. Really shows how we should be taught the basics of how our nation works in school. Politics talks about capitalism as a system so much, but half of us dont understand basic finances. Its so stupid and wierd. Media isnt helping us stay informed either. This youtube comment probably helped me out more than an hour of CNBC.

He will still be one of the world richest people with over well over 3 Billion dollars if he uses his own money to save HIS company. That's enough money for several lifetimes. Don't waste your time defending the undefendable. Their are a lot of other billionaires that are far richer than Richard Branson asking for hundreds of millions of dollars that they can easily afford.

@SharapovaFan 3 жыл бұрын
@@adrians7186 He doesn't have 4.2 billion dollars in cash. You can be exceptionally rich person on paper yet be cash strapped. His net worth is going down as I'm typing this. He can liquidate assets that he can liquidate, but do you have any idea how difficult it is to liquidate assets as diversified as his? There is a time-critical aspect to the cash injection required. It's like medicine. If you don't take it in time, then you're doing it wrong. If he doesn't get the cash injection into the business, it goes under completely and thousands upon thousands of jobs are lost directly and indirectly. If you don't understand that, then you probably have never owned a business your entire life.
