Branson's popularity has definitely declined in the UK. He was always known as being a success but now he's more known for suing the health service (which is a religion here), screwing up the InterCity East Coast rail contract (for the 3rd time) and not paying taxes here. We have a saying here "privatise the profit, nationalise the risk". People are very sick of companies wanting bailouts by taxpayers. Quite honestly if Virgin Atlantic collapses, so be it. Free markets and neoliberalism are always great for owners of big business until things turn sour.

Dunno why ppl are so salty about bailouts. Bailouts are loans. They have to be repaid with interest or gained by selling stock to the government. If the business venture is solid, governments should totally bailout the business and reap the profits for social programs. Case in point, the US bailout of banks during the last financial crisis was immensely profitable. All the banks repaid with interest.

He doesn't have that much money. Most large corporations are publically financed and owned (like being listed on stock markets). Usually the total assets is far greater than any of their founders, as their most valuable asset is probably their share of the companies that they founded. Like I'm sure $600M is a lot for him. I don't even think he has that much. That's more than half of Jeff Bezos' TOTAL wealth, including all his assets like Amazon's shares.

@adrians71864 жыл бұрын
@@davidfreeman3083 Um Bezos is worth 150 BILLION dollars! 600 million is nothing for him. Richard Branson is asking for roughly 600 million dollars from the government (people's tax dollars) when he's worth 4.2 BILLION dollars! He will still be one of the world richest people with over well over 3 Billion dollars if he uses his own money to save HIS company. That's enough money for several lifetimes. Don't waste your time defending the undefendable. Their are a lot of other billionaires that are far richer than Richard Branson asking for hundreds of millions of dollars that they can easily afford.

@@adrians7186 He doesn't have 4.2 billion dollars in cash. You can be exceptionally rich person on paper yet be cash strapped. His net worth is going down as I'm typing this. He can liquidate assets that he can liquidate, but do you have any idea how difficult it is to liquidate assets as diversified as his? There is a time-critical aspect to the cash injection required. It's like medicine. If you don't take it in time, then you're doing it wrong. If he doesn't get the cash injection into the business, it goes under completely and thousands upon thousands of jobs are lost directly and indirectly. If you don't understand that, then you probably have never owned a business your entire life.

The fact that the other 49% of Virgin Atlantic is owned by publicly traded Delta Air Lines would suggest that government assistance is as appropriate as it is for other U.S. based airlines. Or, perhaps that would be done with some additional release of stock from Virgin to Delta (although that would likely destroy the Virgin vibe).

Problem is with so many employees that could lose their jobs, bailouts are more for employees BUT if a bailout happens these CEO's should be under strict limits regarding salary and bonuses. Branson should also have to secure the bailout with his own personal assets. If the company fails, he should lose some $$$ as well.
