Onechunk Ironman is a community-invented Oldschool Runescape game mode all about the grinds... or is it? Today I'm discussing whether Onechunk deserves its reputation as some sort masochistic endurance challenge, or if there's more to the game mode than losing your mind to a 1000 hour grind.

Yeah I gotta agree, the discovery that comes from a depth over breadth search into your chunks lore really is the most enjoyable part for me. Tying together all the weird interactions possible within the area and making something cool and unique out of it is the essence of emergent gameplay. Proper wacky that a 400 year old point and click browser java adventure game can still provide this level of complexity.

Absolutely fantastic video. I've become so enamored over the last 6 months with the depth of Runescape's mechanics even down to the niche, ridiculous things (Your yanille pickpocket strat/Settled pickpockets at the start of Tileman are great examples) Challenges of all types across all games force both players and viewers to think differently about a sandbox and it creates these weird moments of problem solving, thinking together like a team - But no game does it better than Runescape. It's almost as if the game was built with the intention of sparking so many ways to "play it wrong"

I think the main reason why One Chunk accounts (and, by extension, region-locked accounts) are a really fun concept to both watch and play as, is the same reason why stories about 'Robinsons' - characers who are stranded on a desolate island - are so popular in literature. They are essentially the same concept. You have a character confined to a limited space, being all alone, armed with only a limited amount of resources and objects. The only way for the character to survive/get out of the area is to explore and utilize every single available resource and peronal skill they can. For this exact reason, Jules Verne's Mysterious Island was my favorite book growing up. It's an engaging case-study of how five resourceful scientists can use their wit and skill to turn a desolate and hostile island into their own modernized settlement out of nothing. Now that I think about it, One Chunk and Region-locked accounts (particularly, Settled's Morytania-only series) engaged me in a similar manner. I think one of the main factors that makes these videos so captivating is how even the tinyest of regional findings and details - overlooked by most players - can have enormous effects on a character's future and destiny. A discovery as simple as a Mithril Scimitar or a Nasturtium seed can become a pivotal game-changer, providing sentimental value into the character's journey and the overall storyline. Great video, the topic of why these account types and videos became so appealing to the OSRS community is certainly worthy of discussion.

Nice video, but I feel like the fun of Onechunks is the 'pathing' discovery. Watching you outline how you got to the final agility boss was awesome. And seeing Sir Lumbington make a path/goal to reach KQ. If you look at Happerys UIM take on Onechunk, it may be my favorite OneChunk because he has choices in 'rolling' to create a v specific, creative, and weird path

One chunk really helped me get back into runescape, I quit playing quite a few years ago because, like you said, everything was 'solved'. If I wanted to do anything there were a dozen different guides going over theories for the optimal way to do it, I got bored of being efficient, and I couldn't stop myself from trying to achieve the greatest efficiency, killing the game for me. But I saw Slaybrother and Limpwurt do onechunk and I realized that it was exactly what I was looking for. One chunk, for me, is a way of playing the game where I can still try to maximize my efficiency, something I can't help but do, but with so many restrictions it doesn't get boring. Every new chunk brings new possibilities, every new level unlocks new worlds of stuff to try. The game changes so dramatically from the smallest things. After 50 hours of trying I was able to complete a beginner clue, and I got a black pickaxe, and I have never been happier to see a black pickaxe in my life, suddenly mining was an option, and at a better rate than I would've been able to get in half a dozen chunks at least. Getting a steel battleaxe after kicking stuff to death was just pure joy. It just brought life into the game and gave me easy, clearly defined goals, and goals that I HAD to do to progress, I couldn't just go to the G.E and buy it or skip it in some way.

I think a simple way to put this would be "people love one chunk for the same reason they love leagues". It gives you a guided purpose and makes you think about your limitations rather than your possibilities.

A lot of what you described is why I love playing uim. I was once one of those people who said I would never torture myself by playing one, but I started one thinking it wouldn't last long and it's actually a really interesting way of playing the game with the massive limitiation of not having a bank. You have to approach things differently and learn a lot about the game you would never have even as a normal ironman. Now I've been playing it for 2 years and it's my main account, I think I'll try a chunk account next time I want to start a new account.

I wouldn't have gotten into RuneScape if not for the simplicity of chunking. As someone who only experienced the game before through vague childhood memories from the dark age of evil chickens and later Settled's videos, the vast world of Gielinor seemed far too intimidating to get a real foothold. When I can confine that to a 64x64 tile area, it suddenly becomes *much* more reasonable to jump in and learn how the game works again in a controlled environment. Just in time for Leagues to throw me directly into the thick of everything.

While I have not played RuneScape in a very long time, this video touches directly on why I play games the way I do. Weird, highly restricted challenge runs make games feel so alive to me, they make me appreciate aspects of the game I never would have before. great video, you explain your points very well! i LOVE planning in runescape, but part of why i like one chunks is i get to see their plan very obviously. its posted on the side of the screen. which is funny because no planning is a reason you listed as a benefit to one chunks. when i watch ironman or regular players who think ahead, most of that plan is in their head, either its hard to communicate it all or they dont think to do it. I find it satisfying for a plan to be laid out and followed through, and i get a cathartic feeling related to that whenever i watch one chunks.

Having played a BArbarian Village chunkman, the greatest part was truly the amount of weird discoveries and even methods of getting simple stuff like any armor that wasn't a helmet! From ending up adding to the wiki of the stronghold of security to just the odd fact that the level 1 rats drop bones, it was a weird journey in the most fun kind of way. The grinds were just an addition indeed :)

Old School has many out-of-the-way pieces that most people miss, and I love Chunk series(es?) because they put them in the spotlight. Other games don’t have this, or not to the level Old School does. This, plus the dedication just makes them fun to watch. Even on my main I’ll sometimes to do suboptimal things like Salarin the Twisted because it’s content that basically is never touched now.

While it’s not chunkman or anything close, Leagues has been a nice middle ground of having to get creative while also being able to tick all those boxes with a less hefty toll on the grind. I can also say that, thanks to Lumbington and ChunkYanille, I can tell that quite a few people have found your videos and used them to help their limited time to help make their grinds efficient, or at least myself. I am also experiencing the wonder again thanks to videos like yours that makes me go back and rediscover these the game that I’ve not touched in years, and now I’m having more fun with RuneScape (even without leagues) than I think I ever did as a kid as I see new content that people say is grossly inefficient but completely fun to check out

The way you put it, onechunk man is like the community around speedrunning a thoroughly broken game (or any sufficiently advanced game). You get people figuring out new ways to bypass what the devs wanted to be mandatory, new ways in which someone extremely dedicated can save a miniscule amount of time, and the thousands of hours needed to commit that to muscle memory, just so someone can play less of a game that they love and be celebrated for it. I say this with all the love for the speedrunning community (horrible celeste speedrunner here), and I think that makes things easier to digest for someone outside the community Either way, thanks for this, it was a great way to put into words how I felt about one chunk accounts, and cemented in my brain that i HAVE to make my chunkwoman account

the smaller scope of goals is exactly why tileman brought me back to osrs. Playing UIM tileman made it so that I only had to focus on exactly what I can keep in my inventory and what I can access with my tiles. Even though I started the tileman account as a joke, those limited goals made it so much easier and fun, and my most amount of hours on any account was my tileman account by far

One-chunk accounts have the exact same appeal to me as regular ironman (an especially leagues) does: Theorycrafting! Finding obscure ways to train your stats, discovering new things in the game, and having to do it all yourself is so rewarding. The grind is the filler episode before the lore dump which is the theorycrafting for the next part of your journey. I have spent way too many hours pouring over the wiki; hell, I even have shortcut keywords and a streamdeck full of links to get me to various pages on the wiki I look at a lot.

Great video mate, indeed you are right, it's not the grind, it's bigger than us, it's all about pushing each others above and beyond and this with different starts, different journeys. I can only talk for myself, when I started my channel it was not about the grind, the exp per hour or some kind of artificial pleasure of a subcount. it's about multiple reasons, here's mines and maybe they will reasonate to other members who been here for a long time. - Everything I do is streamed, why ? Well Streaming isn't about editing and I hate Editing, I want to do something I like and it will show in the future of the list. And with this "rule", I can show the entire journey without having to make those who want to watch wait for an episode that may not give what they want, even if I take long pauses. If I do something wrong or correct, the watcher of this serie will be capable to see it and judge it, even tell me that "there's something better" in my restricted chunk-based territory. - Theory crafting, truthfully I love it, the number of document and time I took on plannification is longer than the time I took streaming, I even stoped because I had to think about my account again and again, because I entered a conundrum "Should I continue streaming wildly or should I plan more what I'm doing so I don't feel more and more lost each days I stream". Yes ! When I stream, I'm doing it on a daily basis and take time for myself for one-two days, like a job. People could discover it as madness, I see it as a form of dedication. - I wanted something unique, no chunk rolling hype, no editing, no one chunk and then the map get bigger and bigger, nope, I wanted a journey based on Gielinor's Guilds, minigames, bosses and raids, but restricted inside the chunk format creating not just a chunkman, but something wild in my own perception, something that won't make me 'content clostrophobe', but still take a long time and push me to do some wild things, like fishing trawling my magic staff, or getting a high level in construction just to get my brown appron for the crafting guild. - Community, com- mu- ni- ty, I cannot stress enough that I do that because I want to talk with the community, I want the backsit gamers to go in my DMs and tell me how to grind something; I want people to influence that account's journey, because when I stream, I don't want it to be just mine, but theirs as the "watcher", I want someone to feel that "Hey, I influenced that random guy who's job is 'influencer"" x) Being part of the chunkman community, the most wholesome community on runescape, the most respectful and the most encouraging I experienced, not to be proud of being inside of it and smug, but to reinforce it as something wholesome, throwing another helping hand into the crowd of humble gamers. - Living a childhood dream, ok ok, it's maybe cringe, but the truth is when I was young (about 09-11), I played right before the EoC, when summoning was new and I felt lost and wandering and I had this dream of finishing it, finishing the game and I believed at that time that having a skill cape was the best, but now it's the [Mythical max cape], I just want it, but with that twist, making it even harder. Yep~ I think the chunkman community isn't about being proud or "the grind", it's being part of a world of mystery, of unknown puzzles and being part of a group who help each others solving each other's puzzles, one chunk at a time.

I really want to do a Taverley Chunk account. It's probably THE FIRST place every player goes to once they become a member so they can either complete Druidic Ritual or cross White Wolf Mountain to explore the rest of the western half of Runescape. Opening those gates to the west of Falador for the first time was an almost ethereal experience back in the day.

I think this really extends to more than just one chunk and goes into the snowflake accounts in general. My friends and I did a group ironman account where we were randomly selected a region each on a wheel, and we had to communicate and share resources so we could all complete our grinds to move on to the next one. It was such a great account and we finished it with everyone getting quest capes. Anyways, loved the video.

Yeah I agree with all these points. Runescape has no inherent direction by default. IMO it's a hard game to watch on KZbin because of that, and why I don't watch normal Runescape content. But with one-chunk series, I can understand as a viewer exactly what needs to be accomplished, see the gravity of chunk picking, and share in the joy of every individual upgrade (new gear, training methods, etc.) like back when I first played the game. Every new chunk rolled is a novel and interesting adventure.

such a smart video! I've also been thinking about how content creators basically use Runescape as their own game development platform. You get characters, combat systems, items etc. then instead of following the regular rules of the game there is a set they've defined. Like you could play tic-tac-toe by dropping items or people gambling with the flower color thing

I’ve always had this same thought. There are a few games that hand the tools of game design to the players in a novel way and RuneScape is absolutely one of those games!

Personally, I think a one-chunk account starting in Zanaris would be pretty interesting, mostly because the fairy rings would cause the account to diverge to so many different places across the map. Every chunk roll could take the account in a completely different direction.

The point of any challenge run isn't to grind - it's to see the limitations of the challenge. That's true for any game, and why challenge runs are so fun to watch. I see a OSRS challenge account the same as say a Dark Souls one - to see what a run could feasibly accomplish. That may entail lots of trial and error, or lots of grinding, but ultimately the fun is to see the run succeed in ways we didn't expect.

you say you weren't trying to "sell" one chunk mode to us, but you sure did a good job of it to me. I came back to OSRS after 10 years of not touching it after RS3 happened, and even now I barely play my main because there's too much to do! I'm spoiled for choice, but that same choice paralyzes me and with my limited time and energy thanks to work and wanting to spend time with my family/friends it makes it seem not even worth it. But the idea of bringing back that magic I felt the first time playing Runescape back in 6th grade when I first progressed from a bronze long sword to a Steel war hammer? and having defined goals that, while they may take a long time, are something I'd know I'd have to complete and have to find a way to complete them without any help? Definitely has made me heavily consider starting a (slightly less extreme) one chunk account and see if it can hold my attention for longer than my main does.

I play for example as a vanilla but allow teleports to roll chunks which gives unique grinds and crazy finds as Boucr would say.

As a long time MMORPG player, this video encapsulates my desire in MMO content exactly. This is exactly the reason why in almost any game i play, i am the "completionist" type player: clear goals, validating all content (new or old), and making you explore every little part of its world. I mostly play WoW and OSRS, and when i explore a piece of content in a long forgotten corner of the game, i always think to myself: "I wonder what it would have been like when this thing was relevant." Also want to say: great video! I really enjoy listening to pationate gamers talk about games, specifically MMO's, so would definitly like to see more of this in the future! :)

Loved the video, I dont play chunkman but ever since I created my 1def ironman I just cant even log back on my normal acc! Makes the game feels like an actual game and everything feels so much better. Im curious what's the name of the font used at 32:34? I know it shows up in some osrs cutscenes but I cant seem to find it online.
