That was the way KZbin used to be...non hyper edited vlogs. His works because he is massive and people are interested in someone like that and how they live.

This is the dangerous of Formula, we often get caught in a creative blackhole without realizing it! Interestingly , I was quite moved when you mentioned, "broadcast yourself" I have been on KZbin since I was 13 now I am 30 and I have never realized the motto was moved. You will reach your goal, for sure. I was hoping to find a channel that talks about KZbin. But most of the big channels on this topic just repeat the same generic tips. Your channel is small (for now) but it appears to be genuine and authentic, with real and great info. I hope you continue to learn and share. I will watch.

This was my exact feeling, I just wasn't able to put it words, so this video simply explained what I thought about myself and the way I used to make content. This year, I am doing exactly the same - doing something I love and then using videos to share that journey.

100% man. I'm kind of on my second tour of doing KZbin and "daily vlogs" and in this 2.0 version I'm doing less and less for "KZbin" and doing more of what I want and how I want to do it. Letting the chips fall where they may. I've also heard multiple people say that "authenticity" is making a come back. People are starting to gravitate more towards the real life stuff vs the stuff made for entertainment purposes.
@thejayalto6 ай бұрын
I think authenticity is very much the same thing. Being authentic to who you are, and making what you want to make (not just for the sake of it).

Once again it is absolutely crazy how it seems we’re both in the same stages of “KZbin life” right now Jay. I love your goal to make KZbin a place for you to grow and learn cool things. That’s exactly what I’ve begun to realize as well. Moreover, I think I found something else that’s compelling that I wanted to share! I’ve decided to make videos I’ve wanted to make, and for the most part, I believed those videos were just videos about me. As I got closer to expressing more about myself, I realized just how little I actually had to say within the confines of my own life. I realized I could “play the KZbin game” by still making broadly interesting videos while still keeping to the core of what I want to keep making videos for, to develop human connecting with others and grow. An upcoming video I’m planning to make soon is going to be me trying to find a “Gym Bro” and have him be friends with me while having a nice chat eating ice cream. I think I have good packaging that can make for a more widely appealing video, but this video is ultimately still for me to get out of my comfort zone and find interesting things to talk about all the while. I’m glad you seem excited to make these videos for you. Similar to you, I realize the goal for 2024 isn’t to reach a certain number of anything, but to simply make videos that mean something to me, and bring out the spirit of what it means to truly be a KZbinr. I’m excited for what you’ll make, as you’re a person I can connect to deeply, if not for anything else, it’s at least our KZbin journeys; and that idea that I’ll get to see Jay Alto try something new no matter how overdone or mundane it is will be something I genuinely look forwards to. Thanks Jay! You sound remarkably close to Tom Scott with your “breathy” cadence in this video by the way lol
@thejayalto6 ай бұрын
I'm still yet to understand how to effectively play both at the same time. It's certainly possible. My guess would be it's at the point where you maximise optimisation (playing the KZbin game), without having to sacrifice authenticity (documenting, rather than 'creating'). There's only one way to find out!
@it_is_charisma6 ай бұрын
@@thejayaltoIf there's anything I've learned, it's that KZbin is the perfect place to just keep shooting your ball at the hoop many times until you finally score (at least in accordance to this Basketball analogy lol). Documenting versus creating I think is the best way to treat KZbin as I've begun to realize as well, considering that running a KZbin business in the business of creation turns KZbin from a place of expression and passion to a place of monetization. Colin and Samir in their most recent interview with Emma Chamberlain points out the "complex commodification of creativity" and I found that part interesting. But for the most part, I think finding your place on KZbin is a matter of inevitability if you approach it with good intentions of creation and not clout. I've definitely learned to stop looking at KZbin in that way at least and it's so reassuring that you have as well!

I could see you building a solid community by just being yourself. I wouldnt worry about chasing the numbers anymore or trying to make something "viral". In a lot of ways, I feel like "going viral" is a bad thing. I think it almost does more harm than good. I think the appeal with you will be your consistency. Those who really value your content will find it eventually, you dont need to cover any big story or name drop or do some kind of dumb SEO thing. You may not reach 1 million subscribers ever, but thats probably a good thing. idk, keep doing you. Just discovered you today and I really value your content and have subscribed.

I love the one take, no bullshit aproach here Jay! I decided after much reluctance to join youtube as a creator after my freinds saying i should give it a go (boxing day 2023) I must say i am really enjoying it, feeling like i can offer something to people that enjoy my hobby and its also driven me to finish tasks that otherwise would go unfinished. I was an editor/filmaker before (still am) so naturally my stuff is very edited.... i edit fast and punchy (i think its the edgar wright fan in me. So it comes across as retention style editing I think, it does feel like me though) Talking straight to the camera uncut, i would feel very daunted, its an exciting thought though. Do you think heavily edited stuff (baring in mind i like to tell the story through the edit) can still be authentic? Or is the very manipulation of attention thats built into editing pull to far away from that concept?

Truer words have never been more said Jay. I was starting to look into Gary Vee recently and he gave great advice in the past about documenting over creating. Humans are obsessed with humans. I know you gave great examples of Sam Sulek and the others who are documenting and doing something quite extreme with their goals. However I would say you don't even need to be that extreme. Personally I have started getting addicted to watching Uber Eats cyclists delivering food to people or Taxi drivers talking to their customers. And these videos are doing extremely well on Shorts and longform too!
@thejayalto6 ай бұрын
100%. Those extreme examples obviously get the headlines, but it's absolutely not a requirement. I mean, Emma Chamberlain is another great example - she was just documenting life as a teenager.

Really interested in Sam’s growth and I do feel like there is a lot to learn, but are there any other examples of success stories like this where it’s much more natural and less optimised for KZbin? Genuinely curious because I only see people talking about him with regards to this kind of success story.
@thejayalto6 ай бұрын
Emma Chamberlain is another fantastic example. I think Ryan Trahan is finding an excellent balance. The thing with this type of style is the success stories aren't normally as 'headline worthy'. It's mainly the channels that have built a solid community, get consistently good viewership, make what they want to make etc.
@OllieSach6 ай бұрын
Yeah, maybe I am just viewing this too thumbnail-focused rather than the actual content, because you're right and with regards to Ryan, although his thumbnails are optimised they're still very real and the same with his content. I agree that 2024 will, more than any other year, pull focus on building a community of people who understand and align with your 'why'. Loving the videos as ever and can't wait to see your mission for 2024 play out 🫡
