Same. Didn't read much until civil war came out and my mom would get me those comics. Never was a big reader outside of ultimate Spider-Man and manga, then college hit and I stopped reading. Junior year of college and I discovered comixology which was the new 52 run and hopped onto Snyder's Batman and John's Green Lantern. Haven't stopped since. Snyder's Batman is the best I've read (I have a major collection now from the past few decades of major runs)

the only thing I didn't like about Scott Snyder's Batman run with what he did to mr. freeze he got rid of mr. Freeze's tragic backstory and turned him into another Nut Job by revealing that Nora wasn't his wife and that he was just straight-up crazy. I know I'm not alone in that because DC quickly reverted mr. Freeze's origin back to the tragic one,.
@normansmith9009
@normansmith9009 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't blame Snyder for that though. As I remember it was the editorial that wanted most of the characters to be revamped once the new52 started. my guess is that Snyder was just the hired gun to remake Mr Freeze, but I doubt that he was the one with the initiative to do so.
@JcgLounge

Yeah. The new 52 version of Mr. Freeze is not good at all. It ruins what the character originally fought for ever since his animated series redux.

If you can't preview if you'll like it. Id say just read it. I think it's one of the better Batman runs there are. Zero Year is fucking great. The Court of Owls is epic as shit, in a great way. And Death of the Family is just creepy and awesome. Those complete the first 5 volumes of Snyder's run. Any criticism you may have heard about Snyder's Batman really only begins to take place after Zero Year. Where the stakes are just always a little too high. I loved Endgame but im a huge Batman fan, however it was confusing because i hadn't read Batman Eternal so like i said, after Zero Year it's really only worth reading the whole run if you really love Batman. But even if you're just a casual Batman fan, the first five trade paperback volumes are just well told stories and have amazing art. Especially Zero Year.

I’ve been revisiting the new 52, and I have to say that as much as I hate the overall changes to the DC Universe, many of the individual comics were actually pretty great. Great runs on Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Flash, Justice League, Batgirl, and Green Arrow, as well as some really cool smaller books like I, Vampire, Frankenstein, and Justice League Dark. At the time, I hated the removal of legacy characters, the condensing of the timeline, and the generally darker tone, but now when I read each book as an isolated story, they’re awesome.

Scott Snyder is among the best comic book writers of the modern age, in my opinion. He has a knack for changing the worlds of existing heroes in ways that make sense and have a permanent impact upon the continuity. Likewise, all of his solo comics take place in brilliantly unique worlds that can only be described as genius

tbh, this batman run was my first dive into comics, which I think played a factor on why this is my favorite. In addition, the art is so beautiful/great, that it sort of inspired me to draw a more seriously (like adding/learning more correct anatomy etc. to create more interesting drawing even if the character is just standing). Capullo's style just looks cool to me.

Everyone talks about Snyder's Owl and Joker stories, but I think Zero Year gets criminally overlooked. Sure, maybe act 1 isn't great. It's just Year One combined with Killing Joke, only worse. But acts 2 & 3 are phenomenal and gripping, and further cemented why Riddler is my favorite Batman villain. It's probably my favorite arc of Snyder's run.

Although I am a Superman fan, Batman has always been great since I first watched BMTAS, then got into comics in my teens and he already had a surreal amount of great arcs/ stories that just enthralled me. I stopped reading comics for awhile but started back up in my 20s. Then DC did the New 52 and I am glad I was able to read this as it came out. Unlike most I liked the relaunch, not everything but I sure wasn't hating on it like most seemed to. Loved the initial Superman run with Morrison at the helm, the art of Jim Lee on the new Justice League was just stunning, the Red Hood books were great as well but the Snyder run was definitely the cream of the crop in the New 52. There is just something about the great story with the Court of Owls with the amazing art from Capulo that was/is mind blowing. Once again these vids are just amazing. Keep up the great work and stay safe.

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman may not have been my first Batman series I started with, but when I did it was the most amazing and intriguing series I collected till the end. Scott’s writing has been a big inspiration and I can’t see anyone else writing a modern Batman like him, and Greg’s art made every storyline that much more epic, though some fill in artists came in from time to time Scott and Greg were a dream team for Batman and they formed a brotherhood over this series and the creative passion to make Batman not just a superhero, but to show how human he really is and not show it in a bad light like most people will do now a days. I often look back most at Death of the Family and Zero Year as they were some of the runs I enjoyed the most along with The Court of Owls. If we ever got another series of Batman being written and drawn by Scott and Greg then I’m collecting it when it hits the shelves.

I think also what made this run so special was the fact it told me something new while at the same time making Gotham feel lived in and this Batman feel experienced but still learning and it made me care about Bruce outside of the cowl by having alot of close up panels showing his emotions on his face letting us share in his experience, seeing his reactions to the things going on around him

My earliest memory of The New 52 was my dad buying the issue of Bruce in the maze on a Comic App and I read it and I got traumatised from the image of Bruce becoming a giant owl. Now that I’m older and can now afford to make life choices on buying comics, I buy a lotta graphic novels. I started collecting the New 52 Batman book. And I damn adore them, despite the trauma. Zero Year becoming one of my favourite books of all time. Truly the highlight of The New 52. Thank you for this remarkable tribute.

Loved this, Owen! Snyder and Capullo's Batman was the first "run" of Batman I've ever read, and I'm so glad I did. Zero Year is genius. The way Capullo's art and Nick Napolitano's lettering makes your eye follow the path of the swinging crane hook, right in the first issue? And the inspired moment when Snyder and Capullo choose to intercut Bruce's failure to stop Gotham being flooded with the muder of his parents, so they collectively illustrate Bruce's helplessness? Easily my favourite telling of what is normally a well-worn origin. The whole of Zero Year is so creative, and especially impressive given what it had to live up to. Just a slight correction: Julie Madison's father is Mallory Madison, the man who sold a gun to Joe Chill, rather than Chill himself. Easy mistake to make though, given Julie's role near Superheavy's climax of creating Batman as her father did. But speaking of Superheavy? I totally agree with you that its Bruce Wayne story is its strongest element; in fact, I'd argue it's one of the most profound Bruce Wayne stories ever told. The choice to flip the easily answerable question of "Will Batman come back?" to the far more complex "SHOULD Batman come back?" is such a neat solution, presenting the inevitability of Bruce putting the cowl back on as an unavoidable tragedy. And what a statement it ultimately makes about Bruce, the man often dismissed as somebody putting on a Bat costume to make himself feel better over his parents' deaths. Even when free from the trauma of that memory and with a genuinely happy life, Bruce chooses to give it all up when his city is in danger and nobody else can help. It does such a good job of reaffirming the heroism of Batman, completing the deconstruction and reconstruction that took place during this run. And that's not even touching on the one-shots; I will never forget the intese emotion at the final image of Resolve, how it compounded my love for the story and the entire series. I first read Synder and Capullo's Batman during the early months of the pandemic, so it was my personal coping mechanism during that very dark period of all our lives. I really appreciate the opportunity to revisit the run in this way, so thank you so much for making this!

I will even admit, it was kind of calming to see Bruce, just working amongst the people and just living his life. What I love about this run is that for the most part, I can just enjoy it as a standalone universe. I don’t need bundles of New 52 knowledge, some prior knowledge of batmans biggest comics helps for sure, but it’s pretty self contained as a run. And for that, it’s arguably one of the most accessible places I’ve ever started with Batman. Also, every arc feels like a movie in the way it’s written and the images play out. A beautiful Batman story from start to finish

Say what you will about the New 52 (especially the latter day DCYOU thing they tried before Rebirth), but if not for that, I would not be anywhere near as much of a comic fan as I am today. I grew up with Spider-Man comics, but it wasn't until the New 52 that I felt like I could grab books from the fascinating but previously daunting DC side of the weekly New Comics wall. That actually sparked my interest in then branching out to the rest of Marvel and the Indie circuit. I loved the Snyder/Capullo run and feel fortunate to have been a monthly comic reader while that was being published.

Hey Owen, always love your videos, and this one is pretty great. I know you dont have much time to speak about each arc, but i think there is a lot more to be said about superheavy. I am a huge fan of the whole new 52 Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo run, but superheavy holds a special place in my heart. The story works in multiple fronts, it is the first time that a non superhero has donned the cowl of Batman, Jim Gordon is not just a normal guy, he represents Gotham, trying desperately to cling to hope without the cape crusader. And the comic shows multiple times that Gordon is NOT Bruce Wayne, he doesnt know a million martial arts, he is not a master detective, he is just a guy triyng to fill the shoes of a giant. But what really shines for me is that even though he is no superhero he manages to win every situation with his witt alone, he is the scrappiest Batman, but in the end, just as heroic. I actually find superheavy too short, they gave Gordon only a few issues to work as the caped crusader, but in such a short amount of time he showed that he was the right kind of Batman. The ending feels rushed for me, the reapperance of Bruce is expected but honestly feels like a cop out, but i get it, and the final issue brings it home with its simbolism. I would love a video just for superheavy, i think there is a lot to unpack there, and Gordon deserves the recognition, well, him and rookie of course! Cheers from Brazil.

I loved the new 52.. It's had the right level of DC darkness, some goofier runs, the art was for the most part amazing across the board, goeff John's lantern, gale Simone Batgirl (before the purple suit) Kyle Higgins nightwing, I forget their names but the batman and Robin comic was sick and on top of the hill was Snyder and capollo litteraly topping themselves in writing and art every single issue for 50+ issues I'd love to see you do retrospectives on the other new 52 series especially the ones involving the bat family

This run has my favorite Bruce Wayne too. He has a good heart, he's not perfect but he always tries to do the right thing and no matter how many times he gets his ass kicked or knocked down he keeps getting up and never stops fighting for Gotham and the people

Snyder actually did the Riddler justice. Wrote the character like a true genius and more importantly a legitimate threat to Batman and Gotham. All while keeping a lot of what makes the Riddler the Riddler. Someone finally did my favorite Batman villain justice.

I think its worth remembering that in the late Sixties Batman was going to be cancelled. It seems Neal Adams's take on the character saved him from this fate I think it is interesting how characters can recover from actual cancillation, specifically the X-Men. Their revival was stunning.
