I love how Azrael loses because of his huge and overly complex 90's anti-hero armor. At the end the old Batman defeats him with his original suit, which is kind of saying "nothing beats the original"

It's honestly a great microcosm of the entire story. You can have all the fancy gadgets you want, but to be Batman you have to be a real hero.
@ToaArcan
@ToaArcan 3 жыл бұрын
I also like how Batman defeats him. A modern Batman story would have Bruce go "Actually I was planning for just such an occasion and will now beat you with this Anti-Batman-Armour Gadget I have procured from my own buttocks or alternatively my own Batmech Armour" and then beat the stuffing out of Jean-Paul. But in this one, Bruce uses exclusively his guile and barely throws a punch or a Batarang, instead taking advantage of the inherent flaws of the armour, and winning by forcing Jean-Paul to take off his helmet and give up the mantle on his own, then offering a chance at redemption.

@@JustSomeGuy63 The Dark Knight Returns isn’t a main continuity story, just as many of my favorite Batman stories. I think that Death and Return of Superman, Knightfall and Emerald Twilight should be considered a trilogy. They all explore similar themes (fall and replacement of DC's greatest heroes), all happen at around the same time, and plot of Emerald Twilight is a direct consequence of Death of Superman.

True, the difference is that Esmerald Twilight the replacement actually worked. Unlike Azrael with Batman and Conner Kent, Super cyborg, Steel and Erradicator with Superman, Kyle Rayner prove himself to be worthy of mantle of the green lantern, while Hal stayed a villain for most of the decade until die in Final Night and return in Geoff Johns amazing run on the Green lantern book

One thing that I like about Knightfall Saga is how modular it is. If you want, you can just read Dixon's Batman issues, and get a largely complete, focused story. Or, you can read all the tie-ins in the reading order for a story less focused, but much more grand and epic in scale.

-Defeated Bane 1vs1, no matter how brutal the tactics were. -Made Joker piss his pants by breaking his arm. -Utterly destroyed some crazy-ass villains. -Mafia and small-time criminals were terrified of Azbat's wild rule compared to Batman's routine. No matter how much you hate Azbat, you have to give credit to Jean-Paul Valley as he stopped crime for a good period of time in Gotham. He single handedly completed the bat-crusade.

One of my favorites just because of the message and the innovative meta commentary on the super hero genre. Call me old fashioned, but heroes who seek justice without murder are my heroes, and this story is possibly the ultimate testament to that. O'Neill really crafted one of the most perfect Batman stories that should definitely get more praise beyond the Bane parts.

I'm in the middle of reading the storyline right now and all of the villains characterizations aren't given enough credit in my opinion. Adding on to this, one of my favorite moments from the saga is when Joker, in the midst of his latest weekly scheme involving Hollywood and film gimmicks, watches Azbats as he fights and slowly realizes that its not the Batman he knows just from the way he moves, and he's furious about it. Perfect encapsulation of the Joker's obsession without taking it too far like some other modern comics.

I think the way DC "broke" Batman was much better than what they did with Superman. As you concluded in your video: the saga is a way to reintroduce the hero and making it triumph over the grim and gritty replacement. Its both a critique of the times and a reaffirmation of the character. With Superman they did the opposite: they make Superman into a grim and gritty character (the black suit, the weapons, the mass destruction of Coast City, etc, etc) fighting against mindless monsters and psychotics villains. Great video, as always.

My favorite bit about Knightfall was actually the build up. While the Death of Superman was more of a surprise Knightfall was Batman's descent into fatigue and I love how he attempts to take down every villain by himself at once.

In Superman's death they intented to create a massive event with many characters just like the so called crisis. That's why that saga wasn't as good as Knightfall. The less characters appear in a story, the better it is. The only crossover or massive event that is great for me is Zero Hour. It is very consistent and all the characters have an important role. It's not just bring this heroe, the other, the other, kill them, make them disappear or say OMG. Zero Hour is the best event.

While I do like the story, one criticism I have is the way Bane defeats Batman. During all the arc it was established that his main goal is to overcome Batman, who he sees as a representation of his fear. However the fact that Bane decide to attack Batman when he is at his weak state feels a little anti climatic. In fact, as Mr Rogues said, it feels like Bane cheat to beat Batman. He didn't overcome any challenge if there was no challenge to begin with it. He didn't overcome him or prove that he is stronger than Batman (in that weak state, even Kite Man could break the bat). This even makes his whole argument about watching Batman capture his rogues to learn more about him pointless, since Bane wouldn't need to learn any of this if his plan was to attack Bruce when he was tired. If he had fought Batman when he was strong it would feel more like a true victory and show that Bane is indeed more stronger than the bat.

And the same thing happened with city of Bane arc during year of the villain. Bane kills Alfred in front of Damian that doesn't affect Bruce it only affected Damien, at some point between city of Bane and Joker War Joker visited Bane cell in Arkham and calls him out on the whole thing.

I kind of agree... In the sense that if this had been a follow up fight between Batman and Bane What I mean is, it would have been better if we were given a story arc or even just one issue of Bane attacking Batman and fighting one-on-one and at their peak, with it being close but Batman ultimately winning. There could be more than one fight, but that would probably be repetitive, and I don't think Bane is the type of character to try the same thing twice. He's too smart for that. Then Knightfall would have been Bane's follow up attempt to defeat Batman, because since he now knows he cannot defeat him one-on-one in a fight at their peak, this would be the next best thing.
@alexandrefrauches132
@alexandrefrauches132 2 жыл бұрын
@@stealthcomics8280 Agreed. This would be basically a journey similar to Kraven in Kraven's Last Hunt, with Bane being the villain who tries to overcome Batman and prove his superiority and Knightfall is his endgame, the moment where he finally achives his main goal, with his story coming to the end. It would also be better if Knightfall was Bane final story since, after this event, many writers seems to not have idea what to do with Bane. He had some good stories but none of it was able to be memorable as Knightfall.

I really don’t want to be mean but this is one of the main reasons why I don’t like Batman V Superman and why I’m not excited for the Snyder cut of JL at all. Seeing so many people overjoyed at the idea of a Batman who kills makes me wonder if they even understand Batman. Now let me make it clear that I am not against the idea of stories that explore the dramatic possibilities and ramifications of Batman killing. However the way Snyder makes killing such a casual and acceptable, and borderline cool, aspect of the character makes him feel like the anti hero archetypes knightfall was trying to warn us about. And making Batman into a wanton murderer who never shows mercy, never offers the opportunity of redemption, and has abandoned the hope that we can choose to be better is so depressing and miserable. Having a Batman driven by compassion and empathy to save others so that way no one ever has to suffer the tragedy he experienced as a child, despite having no powers, is what makes him so amazing and inspiring. And again let me make this clear, there is a way to tell the story of Batman killing and to do it well. In Batman Beyond where he almost uses a gun to kill a criminal which disgusts him into retirement is a great example. But once you strip that down and take away all that the morals and care that make him Batman, well that’s how the knight can fall and never rise again. Again if you like the Zack Snyder Batman, that is 100% okay. But that doesn’t mean I have to like him.

In my eyes Bane is possibly Batman's second greatest foe (behind, well you know who... 🃏) , as he truly embodies what Batman would have been if vengeance and apathy consumed him. To me Bane has a poetically incredible origin that entices you with his innocence as a child mentally tortured from a nightmare bat-like creature, and as soon as he saw wht he needs to become and understands what his true purpose is, he becomes the inhumane monster that has no love, but only a purpose to use the full potential f his strength and knowledge to truly break Batman at his weakest state, both mentally and physically. Thiss is why I love Bane as a character, because he poses as a mentally stategic mastermind that would take every precaution in order to psychologically torment the Bat. He also has isn't as philosophical ass most of his villains as he asserts himself as a man with a mission, and as such you can develop a level of respect for what Bane is doing as he did what he promised for so long and, even more surprisingly Bruce miraculously has a level of respect for Bane. As well as clearly being the dominant physical superior to Batman Bane committed to what he wanted and as such he *destroyed the body, mind and soul of Batman until he was truly... broken!*

I wonder why Superior Spider-Man worked so well? It follows the same pattern as Knightfall: replace an original hero with his more evil, more brutal version, and, as far as I know, a lot of people (me included) actually really like this version of Spider-Man. I acknowledge his flaws, but it was a pretty fresh, interesting take and he actually was BETTER in some ways than the original. Don't get me wrong, I still think Peter is the best Spider-Man but what Otto did (getting a doctorate, creating a corporation, creating a "web" to patrol the city) was a very obvious step.

Another stellar video. I honestly love this story so much and even got the novel to go with it. The final issue of Knight's End was one of my first Batman comics as a kid as I got it from an arcade. Sufficed to say I got hooked.

Something that the Knightfall Saga had that is great is the re-invention of the D-List villain Firefly. Until the event he was just a guy in a Killer Moth look-like costume with the powers of colors. This being Post-Crisis, Lynns was reintroduced as the insane flying pyro, which is the villain everyone thinks of today. Easily going from a D to B rank villain.

@@OwenLikesComics Thanks dude! I think the X-men comics after Days of Future Past, from the late 80's and 90's is very underrated era of the team, with many good and important stories that are not talk about that much by fans , like the mutant massacre and x-tinction agenda (the only exception is the Asteroid M arc, but that's because of Jim Lee's art and the fact it was the last story written by Chris Claremont).

I never thought about this story and specifically Azrael as a deconstruction if the gritty pulp heroes of the 90’s. I think the story works a lot better thinking about it that way and knowing that was their intention.

In the 90s, DC copied the Captain America No More storyline from Marvel which was written by Mark Gruenwald between 1986 and 1988. That story was copied by DC for Reign of the Supermen, Wonder Woman: The Contest, and Knightfall. I think if DC figured that if Captain America (a Marvel hero whose brand more resembled the DC heroes) could be made cool and relevant by being replaced with an extreme successor, then so could the Trinity. Emerald Twilight took the concept in reverse with the original hero being the psycho and the successor being a typical shiny hero trope. Nowadays, the bitch-moan-whine people would hate this, delusionally thinking such change would be forever.

The coolest part of Knightfall is the beginning because we get to see all the villains lose and they all get their moment to shine. The Ventriloquist is separated from Scarface and has to use a sock. Zsasz has one of his most creepy stories. We get to really understand Firefly. But the highlight is Joker and Scarecrow teaming up to torture the mayor. It has a great bit where an exhausted Batman is exposed to fear toxin and sees Jason Todd. Rather than quivering in fear he instead flips out and begins to beat the Joker and the two have to escape. Which leads to one of my favorite Joker moments where Crane decides to leave and spray Joker with his fear toxin. The Joker screams for a bit before laughing at Scarecrow and beating him with a chair.

Crazy how something core to Batman as not killing is debated by comic book fans today: some saying he doesn’t and others not only saying he doesn’t, but that he is better doing so. Great video!

It's one of the best. Jim Aparo, Chuck Dixon and Doug Moench were underrated artists. Even Geoff Johns can´t make something like that. For example, the three jokers saga ended with a boring storyline in which we didn´t know the name of the joker and it was only a continuation of the killing joke. In Batman Knightfall we had a story surrounded by mystery, brutality, magic, action, intensity.

Knightfall was the first graphic novel I bought as I started reading comix again with Volume 1. I really enjoyed it despite the backlash The Azreal Batman received. However, what was going on with comic book sales at that time it was a brilliant move by DC to push the limits of telling the story of a hero. Especially with The Death/Return Of Superman. And Emerald Twilight. Those stories were the next one's I bought after getting Volume 2 & 3 of Knightfall & looked into the history of why these stories were written. Thank you to OLC for making & sharing this video.

I like Knightfall so much more than Death of Superman, because it takes that meta-expectation that Superman will eventually return and turns it in-universe. It has almost the same gravity and creates the same opportunities for other characters to shine, but it doesn't feel like a slap in the face when he eventually comes back and saves the day, because he's Batman, of course he can overcome a broken back.
