About that INSANE STORY I've ever heard... did someone actually write a book that literally ripped off those companies and still got not just published, but numerous times? If that ACTUALLY happened, then (and forgive me if you've already answered this request) can you provide a few links to the title?

It’s amazing that modern anime have shown such incredible love and respect for Sega. I’ve seen a lot of Sega consoles in 90s anime,but never thought that it’s continuing to this day. I guess Japan wants to reminds us that Sega should not be forgotten in our memories.

Yep so true. Ironically, Europe and the US got a different set of Japanese saturn games. There's a few differences between them. For example, Europe got Megaman X3, Keio Flying Squadron 2, King of Fighters 95, Dragon Ball Z: Legends and Deep Fear while none of these were launched in the US. On the other hand, the US got Megaman X4, Megaman 8, Astal, Albert Odyssey, Magic Knight Rayearth and Iron Storm which didn't launch in Europe. Sega's distribution was... odd back then.

Fun fact; Sega has always been collaborating with Love Live! since at least 2014-2015, usually for merchandise such as plushies. Rin Hoshizora from Love Live! School Idol Project, Hanamaru Kunikida from Love Live! Sunshine!!, and Rina Tennoji from Nijigasaki High School Idol Club even have been featured as Sega Girls, although Superstar! has yet to have such a poll for a Sega Girl from their unit, Liella.

Just a side note, I remember in classic 90s anime Dragonball Z Mr.Satan gives majin Boo a "Gamepoy" to play (which has a bomb inside) in an effort to distract and kill him. And I also remember that in Sailor moon my waifu Sailor Jupiter was very much into Arcade games but never there was any specific references to any actual games. I also remember from the Author pages in the earlier volumes of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama himself mentioning that his wife confiscated his Famicom because he wouldn't stop playing Dragon Quest 🤣

I will be completely honest here. I knew that Saturn and, to some extent, the Dreamcast would be featured in the anime given its popularity in Japan but I had no idea that the Mega Drive, which fell behind the Super Famicom and PC-Engine in Japan, would be featured in the anime as well. This really makes me wonder about the factors that could have led to it. Could it be that the Sega's popularity on its retro console could have made even the Mega Drive into the anime scene?

Hahah you clearly had fun with this video XD this video could be great for drinking games 😂 My theory of why Sega now seems so prominently epitome of retro gaming is because it encapsulates a very specific era that had a very clear beginning middle and end whereas Nintendo and Sony kept going to these days . Of course Sega is still exist but it's not the same as their time as a console developer and how much they were into putting Innovation and creativity into their games at that time. And basically we are in the era of the nostalgia for the '90s after the nostalgia from the 80s was dried to the death by every possible form of media.

Nice video! a few things though: -You forgot about two animes with a ton of game consoles, which would raise the count of all the companies by two: 1-The World God Only Knows, A 2010 anime all about an extremely hardcore gamer and visual novel lover, with multiple scenes of all his consoles including one where he controls them all at the same time. 2-Ixion Saga DT. A 2012 Isekai anime where, in one episode, the MC teaches the history of creation through talking about the history of gaming, with pictures of all consoles flying in the background. -Not sure why you decided to include Sega's 6th gen console (Dreamcast) yet exclude the rest of the companies' 6th gen consoles (PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox). I don't think that is fair. -Also not sure why you decided on 2010 specifically as the cutoff date for "Modern Anime". I think the 21st century would have been a way more natural cutoff date. Death Note and Code Geass were released in 2007 for example, and they aren't really considered "Retro Anime". -A likely reason for Sega having more representation is simply because it is the only major player in Japan's console market that has ever disappeared (as Atari didn't have much of a notable presence there other than the Lynx for a bit). Both Sony and Nintendo are still releasing consoles, while Sega isn't, so it is far easier for Sega to symbolize the bygone retro era in one's mind there. The only other company that would even be in the discussion would be NEC, and they only had 1 successful console and 1 flop console to their name. -Lastly, it annoyed me that in Hi-score Girl she was playing the Game Gear without any cartridge in it lol.
@st1ka

Oh, I didn't know about The World God Only Knows and Ixian Saga, any idea which episodes those were featured in? Oh and Honestly, I wasn't sure I'd include the Dreamcast or not, but then again, the Dreamcast only got one reference in passing and that same anime also references the Sega Saturn, so it ended up being a non-issue. With that said, I didn't really find any anyime that referenced the Gamecube, Xbox or PS2 during the last 10 years.

Let us take a moment to pay respect to the half of the Saturn library , and the near entirety of the PC Engine library, that never touched the west. Great video! You reviewed many animes that feature Sega. It's clearly it has more representation than Sony or Nintendo. Still I missed an explanation on why do you think that happens. If attempt to find an explanation I would say that since retrogaming has a nostalgia factor, the overrepresentation of Sega is because it inspires a higher nostalgia factor than Sony or Nintendo. The legacy of Sega as a videogame and hardware manufacturer is frozen in time, whereas Nintendo and Sony got new releases of their landmark games for every new console iteration. It's hard to miss something if you get new upgrades every few years of essentially the same game (Super Mario Kart vs Mario Kart 8). Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon, Guardian Heroes, Last Bronx, Space Channel 5...all these emblematic games are bound to specific systems that no longer exists and neither these games exist in the form of an upgrade in a modern system. If you want to play them, you got to go back in time.

Sadly, there's no clear answer. I think there was a resurgence of Sega's gaming past in Japan, but sadly, even that is speculation on my end.

It's more related to the target audience (of the anime), more than "retrogaming" as a whole IMO. As a proof the Famicom Mini and Super Famicom Mini have widely outsold the Mega Drive Mini in Japan (source: Media Create): Nintendo Classic Mini: Famicom - 580.847 (in 2016) Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom - 929.176 (in 2017) Nintendo Classic Mini: Famicom Weekly Shonen Jump 50th Anniversary Edition - 111.000 (in the launch week, in 2018) PlayStation Classic - 140.354 (in 2018) Mega Drive Mini - 169.689 (in 2019) The advantage Nintendo has over the others console makers, is that their run is still uninterruped (and they are dominating hard at the moment) while their whole business revolves around the continuity of their legacy. As you said if a youngling get addicted to Mario Kart 8, he have a long inturrepted line to explore backward down to the Super Famicom if he wishes to know more about the series. Therefore the popularity of Nintendo's legacy get renewed generation after generation.
