Nice video! I'm from Brazil and I remember getting a few of those comics. I was becoming a Megaman fan because of the X series I was playing in SNES and the Megaman cartoon was popular here. But yikes, these comics were awful. I wanted to enjoy them because of Megaman, but the inconsistent quality and dark themes (I was a kid at the time and I couldn't sleep after reading issue 4) got me away from it quickly! Even with brazilian comic market being hard for newcomers to join, these national Megaman comics were simply too terrible to support.
@st1ka3 жыл бұрын
It's a shame too, because according to the editor pages they could have distributed the official Megaman manga in Brazil, but instead, decided to focus on a 100% Brazilian Megaman. They also said that they hated the fact that Japan wouldn't let them color in the Manga.
@Pixxeria3 жыл бұрын
Hey, nice video! Just a few minor corrections/comments: You mentioned that both editorials by José Roberto Pereira and Sérgio Peixoto verged on being xenophobic towards Japan. I don't think they were - Peixoto, who is still alive, was a very important figure for the anime scene in the 90s. He was one the organizers of the first big anime convention in São Paulo - Animecon. So I'm guessing the tone of those editorials was more in line on trying to make the Megaman comic more important and prestigious and, of course, they used the "patriotic" rhetoric as a way of justifying using cheap, amateur labor. But they were not wrong in saying that the editorial market was very much dominated by foreign comics. Yes, there was Mônica and José Carioca, but Mônica is the ultimate exception, they are a media empire. José Carioca is still owned by Disney so even if they were making the comics in Brazil (not anymore) back then, it's still a Disney-owned product. Other titles like the atrocious Blue Fighter and this very series were usually very short lived. Nowadays, the comic scene in Brazil has shifted to creator-owned, crowd funded projects and is in a very different state, while Abril, the biggest name in the publishing market, went out of business. Also, a little factual mistake: Zé Roberto Pereira and Peixoto did have a falling out, but the magazines you showed were made by both of them together. Japan Fury was their first anime-related project together and after it was cancelled they created Animax together, which was a very sucessful magazine (for the standarts of the time). Both were actually very good compared to the competition. Zé Roberto Pereira was actually not a very liked person at all - just like his prose shows, he had a mouth and could easily anger his superiors, which led to his career after splitting up with Peixoto being very sporadic. He'd become notorious on fan message boards, but he could not really gather a fan following that could help him finance anything because he had zero people skills. Also, Peixoto angered one of the competitors when his magazine criticized the rival's story on Evangelion (new and exciting at that time!) and the competitor proceeded to find him and beat him up! Peixoto then... published the police report for his assault on his own magazine! Such crazy people lol

I love seeing this kinda content from your channel. I guess almost all of it is this kind of thing though, lol. Like, when I first discovered the weird (non-Archie/IDW) Sonic comics in Europe, I was blown away. Just a whole new thing to dive into and it was just really interesting. So this kind of thing with Brazil's Mega Man - despite being a messy production (or maybe _because_ it's so unusual) - is awesome to discover! I mean honestly, this story has it all - a guy who died but there's no record of it so people are theorizing he faked it, art for the comic drawn by the readers of the comic, crazy rambling rants from the head writer, nudity, aliens, ritualistic sacrifices... dude, if I didn't see it, I wouldn't believe it! This was an incredible story to sit through. And the comic itself has some really cool art in places depending on the artist like you pointed out! I also have memories where they inserted stories and cameos of other games like Decap Attack into the comic at the time, all willy-nilly. But mostly when I dove into these things, I noted the art on the covers being a bit off model and particularly "edgy" with sharper spines and angry expressions. Usually that's what WE did here in the 'States (good ol' "angry eyes Kirby" can attest to that!), but our Sonic was always a brash, little chubster on comic covers back in the day. @@st1ka Yeah probably. A lot of Sonic stuff isn't obscure anymore; the fandom eats it all up. But I still think you hit a good vein with these old video game comics as far as good content goes. I'm fairly certain it involved some real life kid getting shrunk down or all the tiny characters from the game boy coming out and flying around his room? It was baffling. A correction: Japan Fury and Animax were not competitors. First came Japan Fury with José Roberto and Peixoto as editors, then Japan Fury ended and Animax was born with José and Peixoto as editors. José Roberto left after 20 editions I believe. Both magazines were great, much better than mainstream ones like "Herói".

From the title, I just expected a Mega Man Sega Master System game, but this is much more interesting. Wow, that plotline is awful. Sounds like a really bad fanfiction by someone very oddly obsessed with Roll. But I kind of like this design for mature Roll, she kind of reminds me of Winry Rockbell, sometimes drawn well, other times not so much. Even the Princess's design was kinda cool when she was introduced.... and then the art took a shit in the panel where she went on about Brazilian nationalism. But yeah, it's astonishing anyone even thought of releasing this, it's such a terrible mishmash of ideas that you'd think someone would have went "No, stop, we can't release this!" but yet, no one did.
@st1ka3 жыл бұрын
Roll's design is pretty good in some of the issues, but yeah, they pretty much only did that so they woudn't get in trouble lol. The weird thing is, in one of the Editorial pages they specifically said they could have brough the Megaman manga but chose against it because they wanted to make a 100% Brazilian Mega Man comic
@novomundo75592 жыл бұрын
Brazil in that time was (and still is) very obcessed on making a National industry of mangas, Comoc, movies and more, i think that it's strong now because in brazilians movies you barely find something that passes in another country, or in a fantasious place, they always try to praise national identity, so Princess Dialogue makes sense nowadays, and that's boderline creepy

I appreciate the video! Always interesting to see people talking about Novas Aventuras, haha. That being said, there's a bit of misinformation there: 1:03 The comic wasn't a tie-in to the Ruby Spears cartoon specifically, though I suppose it can be attributed as part of the reasons for its existence (and they do reference it on occasion). 3:20 None of the artists were paid, but they weren't expecting to either - it was made clear from the beginning that this was not paid work, and it was more for exposure/portfolio building. Looking at this from today's perspective seems insane and scummy, but you gotta remember that this was Brazil in the 90s, there really wasn't much of a market for brazilian comics, and no good way of getting your work out there either, so getting your art published in an official comic was a dream for many, and like you said later, some of them would indeed go on to other professional work. 5:50 I'm sorry, but this is a pretty silly theory. Capcom (or rather, their representative) would've been aware of the comic still being published and there's no way they would've let that happen without the rights, not to mention that one, every issue has Capcom's copyright at the end, and second, and this is something more obscure to find out, but the fact is that Capcom gave the license to Sérgio Peixoto because they were really excited to get anything going at all to promote the brand, giving them a free pass on everything; The whole thing with the 4 Issue test run wasn't so that they could renewal the contract with Capcom after, it was because the comic publisher itself did not want to commit to more than that. 7:35 Animax and Japan Fury were both magazines that Sérgio and Roberto worked on together, they didn't exist at the same time, haha (Japan Fury came first and then later Animax. I also don't know where you got that they were of "dubious quality", but that's far from the truth. They had their mistakes obviously, but there really wasn't any other magazine with the same level of information about japanese media at the time in Brazil) 7:42 According to Sérgio Peixoto, the falling out had nothing to with the Megaman comic If the story of the comic seems like it was kinda being made up as it went along it's because it was, the comic was always on the verge of cancellation and they never knew if it was going to continue, until it finally happened. I definitely agree with you that the story behind the production of the comic is a lot more interesting than the story of the comic itself, there's a lot of stuff that hasn't been told or is not very well known, haha. Cheers!
@st1ka2 жыл бұрын
Ah thank you for the clarifications, though just to be clear, I didn't mean to imply that the final form it was a tie-in to the show, only that it originally was set to be one. But because the writers hated the show the idea was quickly dropped. Regardin'g capcom's approval, sadly I've heard several theories about it. Many Brazilian comic fans even dispute that the series was ever official at all. So I was just throwing my theory, but I was just throwing in my 2 cents xD Regarding the magazines being of dubious quality. That was the feedback I received from several Brazilian fans who helped me write and research this video. Several fans told me it was filled with misinformation and poor translations. ^^

I got really mad at the time when they said my drawing was "weak" because I thought I drew well (now I see it wasn't as good as I thought it was but it was definitely better than the art of some later editions). Looking back today, I think they said that for two reasons: 1- they were angry/offended by my letter criticizing them. 2- I was still a kid (I was 11 or 12 years old), they probably couldn't accept me as a artist.

Hey, an old art of mine i send to the comic appears in minute 3:36 in the video 🤣🤣🤣!!. It was in fact a piece of submission to be an artist in the comic. In fact many of the iluatrations in the letters section are from submissions. As a Brazilian comic book artist, i can say that there was some comic book scene happening in the 90s, but mostly on the Rio - São Paulo axis. Nothing that can compete with foreign translated comics of course. It was the "boom" of the brazilian manga, as many publications like that hitted the shelves, with only few passing the 1st issue. Turma da Monica was already a stablished title for many decades, so it's not in the acount. As you said, many artists rise from this period to become great figs in industry today. Yes, there were many editors who took advantage of young artists. It was a rough time, but now we have a pretty cool independent scene, as it became more easyer to self publish in the last decade or so.

I was thinking the same thing! Ciel (who is almost a Roll "sequel" in MMZ) is being pursuited and she finds the capsule where the legendary hero is sealed, he comes out and saves her life, some pretty strong parallels despite the fact that this came out first! For other stories that give me Megaman Zero vibes, there's also "Mechanical Violator Hakaider" which is a tokusatsu movie from the mid-90s, he's from the "Kikaider" franchise which is from the same creator as "Kamen Rider" (way bigger and more popular tokusatsu franchise). Also the anime series "Cassern Sins", mostly for the character designs and post-apocaliptic aesthetic, if you ever wondered "what an animated Megaman Zero would look like?" then I recommend giving this one a try, it's pretty cool and dark.
