Sheffield wasn't added to the name until 1929, before that they were just known as The Wednesday Football Club. Another interesting fact was The Wednesday played at Brammall Lane but moved to Owlerton on the outskirts of the city after the council put the ground rent up, their nickname at the time was The Blades, but having moved to Owlerton they adopted the first 3 letters and picked The Owls as their new nickname. Sheffield council on being left with a ground but no team, formed a new team, they took players from a few local teams in Sheffield such as Attercliffe FC, Heeley FC, Carbrook FC and a few more, they gave the new team the name Sheffield United, and they adopted the nickname The Blades. A few years after Wednesday moved to Owlerton, the city started expanding out and a new area was formed, Owlerton still exists, but boundary changes mean't Wednesday's ground now came under the newly formed area, which was named Hillsborough.

Excellent. I believe they were originally butchers who had to work Saturdays so they played in their day off. Wednesday we're also called blades in the early days before moving to hillsborough where the district was and still is called owlerton thus penning the nickname the owls .
