How Shoulder Bursitis Causes Frozen Shoulder (MOST IMPORTANT EXERCISES) - Dr Mandell

Poor posture, rounded shoulders, anterior head carriage, cumulative trauma disorders, weight lifting, and injuries all affect the shoulder joints. Repetitive movement of the rotator cuff can lead to inflammation of the bursa (Bursitis) in the subacromial region. Pain causes restriction of movement which leads to frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis).

This is by far the best clip I have seen explaining frozen shoulder, the development of adhesions, and the risks of not moving the shoulder/joint. Your simple exercises are perfect for a person for whom the pain still exists and who greatly fears this pain.

I’ve seen a lot of videos on shoulder issues. I think this is the most comprehensive, really well explained. Thank you so much! Many people talk about bits and pieces of this but don’t really give all the information that you did and then it causes reoccurrences of damage. I had shoulder pain incompletely diagnosed, then ended up with frozen shoulder, then therapy, then surgery, then more surgery...and the whole time researching on my own. I’ve learned a whole lot about the shoulder in the past 4 years as a result, but I still periodically re aggravate everything. I try to be very diligent about the parts to be healthy, but inevitably aggravate it again. So this was helpful to fill in a couple gaps in my process. Thank you for all your videos! I hope this helps me, as I’m currently sitting with ice on my shoulder 😊

Even before all those exercises there are ways to free up the joint so those exercises work better. I used a spikey ball. Actually I found the spikey ball too severe so I got a rubber dog ball and used my sore shoulder to roll that on the wall. I stood back to the wall with the ball wedged in between and rolled away my pain. Any place where there was a sore spot I placed the ball and rolled up and down, side to side, gently following the pain lines. The pain of contact with the ball felt very good but I never pressed too hard unless as happened in the latter stages of repair, my body felt it wanted really firm contact. Full relief is not immediate. It takes time for all the pain to subside, like a few hours to overnight. Then it has to be done over and over. But eventually the relief is permanent. I haven't used any of my roller balls in many months. I do have permanent damage from having those terrible operations where they pull the crap out of your shoulder to attempt to free up the muscles. It is a case of the blind leading the blind! Dragging on tense muscles is not the way to free them up. You can have someone massage your sore muscles several times daily until the shoulder is freed up or you can use the balls and do it yourself. Use the ball before attempting the exercises given here. You might find you get more relief from the ball rather than the exercises.

I had bursitis last September in my right shoulder. Then I had surgery on my right elbow on November 1st. So arm was out of use for 3 months. Then I went back to training for 2 weeks and noticed that I had this ache, which I thought was due to my arm being used for the first time in months. This ache got worse so i stopped training thinking I had gone back to working out too soon after my elbow operation (ulnar nerve entrapment) anyway within another couple of weeks I could not move my arm in any direction more than one inch. This lasted fo 8 weeks. Motion started to return about 3 weeks ago and I can now move my arm but not lift it above my head. I'm going to try these exercises to help release my shoulder. Hoping it won't take too long, really need my arm back :-/

Thank you I fell on my shoulder over a year ago finially was refered to an bone doc he sent me for an MRI. He told me I had bursitis pain radiates from outer arm down bicep to fingers. Decided to do exercises he told me to do but it's getting worse so stopped and started looking for other information cant afford to go to a physical therapist too expensive be 500 a month or more. I found you and one other Doctor on here you have the best information for a frozen shoulder which I believe Im developing. I have a very high tolerance for pain and believe I may have injured it further because of it. The pain in my shoulder now feels at least a 8 to 10 if I move it up till it hitches or over use my bicep, so I've been resting it while doing research not just on KZbin its just that I know that you can find some really good reliable info if you know what to look for exactly. You just have to look deeply enough and have the right back ground and know when to get expert advice ie calling back my Doctor and making sure its okay. Going to get my self an ice pack per instructions and do exercises at least 3 if not 4 times a day.

Last 50 I did slowly but I pushed really hard to complete them in set of 20 's . Now I am unable to move elbow . And shoulder triceps of Right arm hurting badly. I did an x ray for shoulder , there is no dislocation . A doctor said it's tendinitis. It happened 5 days back .

What is/was your job, that caused you frozen shoulder in both shoulders? I work all day on a PC, and when I get home I get on the PC again, so my arm was already stressed enough, then I usually played a game that requires very aggressive movements with the mouse, so that maybe further developed the problem. I am terrified that I may get this problem in my other arm. It kinda hurts now, because I sleep on that side a lot more, am not sure if it is a start of new frozen shoulder.

Great explanation, really helps me understand what is going on in my shoulder. For people with bad capsulitis should maybe just start with the 3 exercises on your other, shorter clip (the way you explain the exercises really helped... been doing them for months to no avail. GP thought I had bursitis and impingement to start with. Physiotherapy did no good at that time Had Steroid injection into bursar - no effect at all. Chiropractor told me to get an MRI.. I did, it showed the adhesive capsulitis Had a accupuncture to help with the pain.. 1st session made a HUGE difference (in UK some GPs wll refer you for accupuncture on NHS... make sure you go to a physio who does accupuncture, not just an accupuncturist, mine covers physio and accupuncture.) Had steroid injection into the joint (ouch!) - after a week of so initial pain stopped. Definite improvement I could not do the stretch at all before jab (where you place arms on bed and press back and down) but after dong pendulums PROPERLY (like you demonstrate in other clip) I swear I could feel an increase of movement/ adhesions easing up as I did them! After that I managed to walk my fingers up the wall almost vertically!! And do the stretch mentioned above. PS: My bicep has also withered away to flaccidity - can’t even flex it any more, seems to go even flatter when I flex??? What exercises do you recommed whilst I have this dodgy shoulder?

Yesterday when one of your new videos popped up on my Android, I happened to be sitting by my husband who recently hurt his shoulder. I've been to 13 PT sessions, another 9 to go and still having shoulder problems. Both of us utilized your video, following along with the simple shoulder exercise and felt instant relief to some degree. Yet here I am at 5:30 a.m. watching another of your latest videos, still eager to learn more about this pain. How can I get this "thing" unstuck from my shoulder/neck area? I'm doing all the exercises my PT set me to do, getting stronger but I keep running into pain in that tiny cartilage joint of my sternum. Very painful to touch. When I try to lift my right arm to the sky it fights me tooth and nail, as if I'm trying to push a mountain towards my neck, it bunches up tight there. Feels like something hard is in the way of my range of motion, if that makes sense. My neck and spine is looser and my ribs are far more mobile than they were in September when I was in such horrible condition as to see my doctor and be sent to PT. I get up in pain every morning and have to do all my PT exercises just to function. Have been avoiding all my usual outdoor activities like raking and working in the yard. I think I just learned from your video here this morning that I really should be doing more to keep from locking up the way I am now. I'm 61 and generally enjoy lots of heavy tasks around the yard and like to build things, ie: hand sawing, hammer, cordless screwdriver, rocks, bricks, wood kind of gal. Raking and gardening also. It's fall and time to rake up pine needles. I love your videos and appreciate every bit of your sharing knowledge with us. Thank you Dr. Mandell.

Quite commonly and overlooked often is fixation or lack of movement in the sterno clavicular joint. That is where the clavicle or collarbone meets the sternum. Hard to explain although if you put slight pressure from medial to lateral on that joint sometimes it can't release and cause normal mobility which will help that area. Otherwise use a moist heat should be helpful for you.

Thank you for the response. Did you mean to say it can or can't release and cause normal mobility? Moist heat ie: very warm shower helps range of motion for sure. I've always had a few aches and pains from overworking, but it usually goes away. Nowadays, I wake up with many muscles or tendons in my neck, shoulder, back locked up tight and it's quite painful. I believe my 61 winters is the magic gateway into arthritic-like pain hell. LOL

So I'm reading about the SCJ. I believe this could be my problem. Have been telling my PT that it feels like something is stuck where it doesn't belong and it all leads to that area. My next step.... search your videos for help with the SCJ. :) Have a great day and thanks so much! emedicine.medscape.com/article/828642-overview#a5
