I've been to Singapore once and will be going back soon again for a visit. It's truly a remarkable nation with an impressive society. We in the US could stand to learn from Lee Kuan Yew's pragmatic approach to the economy, security and society building.

In the early 70s, PSA wasn't that efficient with the underworld controlling the stevedoring operations but he was willing to change that scenario by actually simply "bought" the traffic manager from Port Klang (then Port Swettenham), by hijacking him when he was an economic class world tour (as the practice then for senior staff with 10 years of service ) by napping him at Tokyo airport by offering a few folds of his salary then ( though it must noted that Singapore dollar was about on par with the Ringgit then) plus continuing his tour on business class! Singapore is blessed to have a Lee Kuan Yew in 1965 when she became independent. Just look at her neighbour, Malaysia who became independent 2 yrs earlier in 1963. Malaysians did not have a Lee Kuan Yew. They had Mahathir instead. Both Prime Ministers ran their respective countries concurrently for around the same duration. Singapore transformed from third world to first world within one lifetime. Today, Singapore is a developed cosmopolitan city state with excellent infrastructure and the best airport in the world for many years running. Malaysia is still a developing country which will never catch up unless Singapore keeps still and stops innovating. Singapore is what it is today because of Lee Kuan Yew. In the words of Charlie Munger, "Lee Kuan Yew inherited a malaria swamp and turned it into an economic miracle. He holds the best record in the world for nation building". Malaysia on the other hand is what it is today because of corruption, ineffective leadership and outdated policies. If Malaysia had a Lee Kuan Yew or just half of him in 1963, Malaysia will be very different from what it is today. Conversely, if Malaysia had a Lee Kuan Yew in 1963 and Singapore had Mahathir in 1965, this video will be all about Malaysia and how she became an economic powerhouse and a success story for other countries to emulate. And Singapore will still be developing, corrupt, backward, poor, and without any world first. So yes, its all about the quality of leadership in the one case. And the lack of it in the other. So yes, give credit when credit is due. Call him whatever you like but Singapore is an economic success story and its people are properous today because of Lee Kuan Yew.
@WumingBoshi-oe9yu3ib7p8 күн бұрын
That explained why Mahathir has animosity toward Singapore, which does far better than Malaysia!
@hosayleow30968 күн бұрын
@WumingBoshi-oe9yu3ib7p Yes. Singapore's achievements has shown how incompetent and ineffective Mahathir was as a leader. Lee Kuan Yew was a statesman who was highly regarded and well thought of by many other world leaders and particularly Deng Xiaoping who instructed his party members to go to Singapore to learn from Singaporeans. China even requested Singapore to help China set up an industrial park. Hence the birth of China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park. China was so impressed with this collaboration that she requested Singapore to set up another project in China and this led to the building of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City. Mahathir, on the other hand, has nothing to boast about. At the last General Election in 2022, Mahathir not only lost his parliamentary seat but also his deposit. He came in 4th in a 5-way fight. Mahathir is a NATO - No Action, Talk Only.

Forget foreign leaders, Lee Kuan Yew is a well respected figure who is consistently cited by a many of these leaders both during and after his lifetime, many of whom visited Singapore to seek his wisdom and thoughts during their time, today, Mr Lee's books are studied keenly by leaders from the US to Japan and polsci educators who teach the next generation of leaders in reputable universities, some people who REALLY need to learn from Mr Lee are the younger generation of Singaporeans themselves. Mr Lee's foreign policy style of being a fair and friendly partner to all nations, enabled Singapore to work with both the east and west and resulted in us having the world's strongest passport today, this is being forgotten by gen zs who view the world from an emotionally charged and ideologically driven pov which flies completely in the face of LKY's pragmatic approach to foreign policy. In addition, many of the younger generation are far more concerned with foreign wars in the middle east than affairs happening at home, even going so far as to support terrorist attacks on maritime shipping in the red sea which threatens Singapore's own maritime trade industry and causes increased prices for consumers in the name of so-called "humanity". If this new generation fails to learn from LKY, they will ruin everything he spent his life building in the next 50 years.

LKY did not believe in the greater good. LKY believed that small things have big impact when done in unison. All Singaporeans had to move in unison to build - build what? Build a national identity thru airlines and ports and efficiency and good airports, build a space where knowledge is respected as much as gold, and where some groups will be taught critical thinking to challenge the government thru debate, not riots, build industries that rich Americans, and other Nato countries can invest in without them bringing in their political agenda, biuld new land so we have more space for homes and offices and places where people can hang out and have fun on weekends, build build build. Build ports, build schools, build roads, build bridges and above all, make decisions fast by hiring the best. I assure you most of the reasons we didnt get weighed down by protocols is because we made decisions fast. A tree lined street or under the road phone cables with no trees for two or three years and no trees with deep roots. Which do you think he would choose? it was never about greater good, it was about sticking to the plan and making decisions fast. Sometimes fast decisions don't think of important things like mid term impact. But fast is what we needed then, today we can do it a little slower and hopefully a lot better. Something that would make LKY proud, except most Singaporeans no longer have any clue what was laid before, tho it was done fast, took a lot of sacrifice and precision from so many groups, not only men, but also women, not only the Chinese, but also Malays, Indian and Punjabis and Eurasians and whites and other Asians and PanAsians who settled here by 1960s, and it was never ever about greater good - it was about move in unison on the small things till we cause a tsunami across all sectors and clearly communications sectors was our strong points and that gave way to banking. It was never about greater good only unison till it caused a tsunami effect on productivity, efficiency and all sectors blooming at the same time and hopefully, forever.

No matter how much hard work the people of other countries do, they still can't earn money equal to Europeans. I am talking about the majority of the people of a country, not a single person (GDP per capita). The top 50 richest countries in GDP per capita are European countries or oil-rich countries. The real reason Europeans occupy all of North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand, controlling almost 50% of the world's area and natural resources. Now, some will give examples of: - The Korean Economic Miracle, - The Japanese Economic Miracle, - And the Taiwan Economic Miracle. But in reality, no miracle happened. After World War II, Japan received $23 billion in aid, and Korea received $13 billion from America-these amounts are much higher in today’s value, though the exact numbers are unclear. Japan, Korea, and Taiwan became rich by becoming slaves of America (Europeans). These countries provided military bases to America and followed the same foreign policy as Europeans (for example, when the U.S. sanctioned Russia, Japan also sanctioned Russia). In exchange, America gave them prosperity through money, aid, technology transfer, factory setups, etc. For example, Taiwan is a small island country with a population of 10 million, but still, Taiwan is rich because of semiconductors. How did semiconductors come to Taiwan? Because of the USA. RCA (Radio Corporation of America) set up its semiconductor factory in Taiwan in: - 1966 (initially as a joint venture) - 1970 (as a wholly-owned subsidiary, RCA Taiwan Ltd.)

@8August19889 күн бұрын
‘Leaders | Fall in, or halt If national service is so good, everyone should do it Why should older people be exempt from a plan designed to bring society together? CITIZEN armies have been replaced in most countries by professional soldiers, who tend to do a better job of defending the nation than conscripted interns. But the draft is making a comeback in some surprising places. Sweden brought back military service this year, after an eight-year hiatus. France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, is planning to revive national service, which was abolished in 1997. Thinkers in America, Britain and elsewhere have floated the idea - and polls suggest that voters like it. Some small countries with menacing neighbours, like Sweden and Lithuania, are resuming conscription for defensive purposes. But others have different motives. France, which will let teenagers work in a civil organisation rather than the armed forces if they prefer, hopes to foster social cohesion. This cuddlier sort of conscription is already popular in Scandinavia, and growing elsewhere. South Korea has announced plans for social service as an alternative to the military sort, following a court ruling in favour of conscientious objectors. National service has much to recommend it. It creates a shared experience in otherwise fragmented societies, breaking down barriers of class, race and gender. It can be used to instil the values of a country in its population. It builds respect for the armed forces, teaching civilians that their freedom ultimately depends on others’ willingness to kill and be killed. And it subjects a pampered population to a bracing dose of spartan clean living, away from iPads and alcopops. The odd thing is that this wonderful opportunity should be reserved only for the young. Age limits are understandable if the purpose of conscription is to repel marauding Russians. But it makes no sense when the aim is social cohesion. One of the greatest divides is generational; that will hardly heal if oldies sit out the experience. Targeting the young also means that immigrants, who might benefit most, miss out if they arrive as adults. As for the need to impart wholesome values, youngsters should not be the priority. In France, as elsewhere, the elderly are most in need of a refresher on the importance of égalité, at least when it comes to women, gays and Muslims. Older people also drink more and watch more TV. They are, in short, ripe for a few weeks a year of boot camp. So why do countries with “socially cohesive” conscription not impose it on their entire population? The answer is embarrassingly obvious. Voters conclude, reasonably enough, that the benefit to society is not worth the cost to their personal liberty. State-mandated work is often used as a punishment, after all. It interrupts plans, breaks up families and has the potential to be colossally boring. Most polls find that national service is popular only among age groups that would not have to do it. If they believe that such an exercise is not worth their own time, they should not impose it on others. Fraternité v liberté The more liberal alternative is to expand the opportunities for voluntary service. America’s Peace Corps is one model. Britain’s Teach First scheme has got bright graduates into classrooms of their own free will. Other public services, including the armed forces, could increase the number of short-term placements, for all age groups. Doubtless Mr Macron, who sadly was just too young for the draft, would sign up like a shot. This article appeared in the Leaders section of the print edition under the headline “Fall in, or halt”’
@8August19889 күн бұрын
‘Is conscription ethical? Andrew Chan Loves liberty, free markets and the US Constitution. Updated 7y “No. Conscription is involuntary servitude. It is forced labor. It is immoral. One does not owe military service to the state. All the benefits we get from the state is already paid for in taxes, nothing is free. Conscription is not the same as taxation. In conscription, one is forced to do a job that he/she does not agree with. In taxation, one still gets to do a job that one chooses, and only pay a percentage of one’s income as taxes (which is fair because the state provides benefits such as public schools, roads, etc.). The state however, does not have the right to force you to serve simply because you’ve received free education - that benefit you received is already paid for in taxes. People who support conscription are in fact supporting slavery. In the USA, the constitution (13th Amendment) forbids slavery and involuntary servitude. If you live in the USA and get drafted you can invoke the 13th Amendment in court. Of course, the Supreme Court of the United States has had its own interpretation of the 13th Amendment. It (the Supreme Court) ruled during the Vietnam War that the 13th Amendment does not apply to conscription since such duty is “owed” by the civilian to the state. That interpretation is wrong and hypocritical as nobody owes the state anything once they have paid their taxes (even in taxation citizens still have the right to scrutinize and alter how their tax money is spent). The notion that people owe something or anything to the state is preposterous. Any state that supports that notion is a kleptocracy. Involuntary servitude imposed by the state is still involuntary servitude. However, you may get a different response from some people who support conscription. They will use fallacies such as “you owe it to your state, because the state provides you with benefits” and “it’s a form of taxation”. These people have no idea that they are actually supporting a kleptocracy where the state steals from you. You have the right to your own life and limb and only you have the right to decide what you wish to work as without the state interfering and stealing from you. Conscription is also a form of communism/socialism as it is opposed to capitalism and a free market. Countries that claim to have capitalist values while supporting conscription are actually committing hypocrisy as conscription is essentially stealing from the individual to give to the collective. It is taking the autonomy, time, life and limb, of the individual and giving it to the collective. It is where you have no control over your own body and how you choose to use it because the state has conscripted it for the collective. People who are opposed to conscription are not only doing the moral thing, but are also enabling the free market to take its course in selecting only the best and motivated people for the army whist allowing those who do not want to be in the army to contribute to the economy (and war effort) in their own way.”’『終』

@Atheist-hy6xq9 күн бұрын
@@denismonterodiaz476 The point is simple: Singapore’s success is often glorified as a result of exceptional governance or hard work alone, but the reality is that its location, peace, and external support played key roles-factors not every country has access to. For example: Strategic location: Singapore’s position at the Strait of Malacca automatically gave it immense economic leverage. Small countries without such strategic advantages (e.g., Nepal or Laos) don’t have this built-in head start. World Bank loans: Receiving $300 million ($2-3 billion today) for infrastructure development is no small advantage. Without it, Singapore’s rise would have been much slower. How many other small nations received this level of support in such a short time? No war: Countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and India which were ravaged by war, couldn’t focus on economic growth the way Singapore could. Peace is an unspoken privilege that not all nations enjoyed during that period. As for your question about a “more efficient way”-it’s not about efficiency. It’s about recognizing that Singapore’s rise isn’t purely a model of internal brilliance; it’s also a result of favorable external circumstances. The comparison isn’t just about what Singapore did right-it’s also about what advantages it had that others didn’t. So, rather than looking for a “better way,” the takeaway is that success stories like Singapore’s depend on factors far beyond a country’s control, and replicating them isn’t as straightforward as it seems.

Contrary to the propaganda filth that SGP was a fishing village @ the time LKY took over in 1959, was pure hogwash, as SGP was already a THRIVING commercial hub.

LKY is overrated and SG is a tiny place 26 x 13 miles , so easy to develop. He also did not achieve true independence, he signed up to be an Israeli ally from day 1 and soon after that the USA. These ties persist till today - It is a defacto US military base. Don't forget it also had a developed deep water port from day 1 inherited from the UK.

Lol, it’s not a matter of whether we can or cannot; it’s more about whether we choose to do it or not. Under his leadership, we chose to become what we are today instead of living pathetically like you currently do. :)

Regardless of location (n deep port in Singapore's case) or abundant resources, any country that is not well run or corrupted by greedy men, will fail to be successful. So don't assume what Singapore is now was easy to come, despite our size. Israel at that time were seeking recognition from any country it could find, so when Singapore requested for military training assistance, they jumped at the chance to develop diplomatic ties. Remember, Israel back then couldn't offer us any huge economic support or benefits at all. As for wealthy nations like U.S., U.K., Japan, etc. we made it easier for international companies to come do business here; something that most of our neighbours were hesitant to do so at 1st. And we are not a "defacto" base for America as every military vessels needing a port of call to resupply r free to do so here. We don't have the honour to be called a U.S. base like in Japan or South Korea... in case u r comparing. 😅 And btw, the U.S. is our friend, Not an ally. An ally (eg. Australia) goes to war with u, we wouldn't.

Credit should not be given to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew alone for transforming Singapore into what it is today. Around him were an equally educated and determined group of men like Goh Keng Swee, S. Rajaratnam, Toh Chin Chye, Ong Pang Boon, Rahin Ishak, Ong Eng Guan and a few others. And of Mrs. Lee as advisor to the political party. They group elected Kuan Yew as their leader and they stayed in the background out of the limelight. Your pencil sketches of Mr. Lee is amateurish and is an insult to our great leader.

Some people refer to - The Korean Economic Miracle, - The Japanese Economic Miracle, - And the Taiwan Economic Miracle.

Of course!! Every country touched by the war was in ruins n needed help in rebuilding, so naturally they got money from mostly the U.S. or other richer countries to jump start their economic. But did that mean they received a windfall n all their problems were resolved instantly? Of course not!! Those huge amount was a meagre start n does not even recover their total economy before WW2. It was not free money either, they had to pay it back. So every country still struggle to rebuild with the money given... they did not buy their way out of poverty n bankruptcy u know? And not all succeeded anyway. So countries fell into dictatorships or corruption arise because for the money given. So it IS a miracle to recover with the money given. Again, not enough to buy their way out of financial ruin. Disclaimer: I'm not an economist, so this is what I surmised from seeing the growth of these countries out of WW2. So please do not discredit the sacrifices the common people of the world made to reach where we r today, despite any political bias u might have. The world is not perfect, especially not the U.S. But the world is not the U.S. We have to stand on our own 2 feet n fight for our world views, to make the world a better place to live in. ❤ P.S. sorry for the long winded rant. Haha
