I'm glad you didn't title it the downfall of SA cricket, however being a brutally honest Protea, we were unlucky in '92, '96 we made a bad selection choosing Paul Adams against a Lara rampage, '99 we got screwed by a ridiculous rule getting KO by a previous defeat. "03 Pollock and management were sleeping with D/L par score "15 rain screwed us, Faf and ABD where well on their way to 350+ score. The rest forgettable to say the least

That 1999 WC semi-final where Donald didn't run, it hurt me so much and ofc can't forget the 1992 WC debacle. 2007 and 2023 Aussies outplayed them and 2015, if it weren't for Elliott's Superman Knock, South Africa were winning. Their apartheid also stopped them playing cricket for the whole 1980s. But SA always had legends and a great team. Their 1998 Championship Trophy Win also says they weren't always chokers. Kallis' all round 5 wickets and 38 not out to win it for them. SA will still remain one of the greatest teams in Cricket History. There are many reasons for that: 1.) The retirement of those key match winning players who contributed the most in making Australia World Champions for three consecutive times, Ex: Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist and many more(Here I know the fact that McGrath and Warne didn't play 2007 World Cup but few players who replaced them were not selected unfortunately for the World Cup). 2.) Australia was very shaky at the start of the tournament itself losing the match against Pakistan in group stage ending their WC match winning streak, This may have affected their mindset somewhere and may have demoralised them despite having good players. 3.) Having too many past prime players Australian squad had many players who were not in their prime or way past their prime which didn't work out properly for them. 4.) India's gritty determination This was the final nail in their coffin which ended their WC campaign and WC winning streak, They just couldn't beat India in the QF despite Ponting's heroics in batting.

Kepler Wessels was an experienced player when he captained South Africa in that 1992 World Cup. Kepler wessels was dual nationality and had played 24 tests for Australia before returning to play another 14 tests for South Africa. He played many ODI's for Australia and World Series matches as well. He was by far South Africa's most experienced player in international competition so a natural choice for Captain.

I personally still remember as a kid back in the late 2000s how mighty South Africa was, And even heard it from my dad what of a mighty and royal comeback did the Proteas had in 1991, Despite having world class players and literal matchwinners, They were always unlucky in every tournament.
