How Stoicism Can Give You Inner-Peace In a Crazy World

For thousands of years, humans have been partaking in this experience.
Cato knew the feeling. Seneca knew it. Marcus Aurelius too: The stillness of the baths, which the Romans built and enjoyed across the empire for centuries. The quiet of the cavernous rooms with their big, thick stone walls. The darkness that came from laying face down during a massage. The thick air of the steam room. The restorative waters of the heated pool. The white noise of the fountains as they burbled. The quick-breath-insta-consciousness that came from moving from the hot pool into the cold pool. In this video Ryan Holiday talks about the Stoics keys to finding Inner-Peace In a Crazy World.
It was a timeless Roman tradition, a part of daily life, where busy men and women could escape from the dusty, noisy outside world. It was a safe place. A place for stillness and solitude, despite being surrounded by activity and other people. Seems quaint and distant, doesn’t it?
Except you could have this stillness right now. Slowing down. Ducking out from the busy streets and into a quiet place for the wonders of the water, for that restorative alternative between hot and cold, cold and hot. It was available to paleolithic tribes in the form of natural springs, to the Romans by feats of engineering genius, and to you via the benefits of modern convenience.

This stoic way of life has changed me! I have tried rehab for drug use for the past 12 years and usually have religion at the core. I have not relapsed for the first time after leaving rehab and every day I use the stoic journal and readings to learn and grow. It has been a true blessing in my life!

As someone who's childhood was ripped apart by addiction I have such admiration for anyone who manages to break free of that cycle. I know you know it will be a life long struggle but I also know you know its worth it. I am so proud of you. You can do this.

I wish id had this when my kids were little. I found philosophy when i was around 15 then stuff happened and i forgot all about it till pretty recently...in the mean time i had kids ,and i couldve really used this... Im 55 now and feel the most important moments couldve been so much better if id just had this. People are so lucky now to have all this information so readily available. Im lucky at least to have come back to it all these years later. This stuff is the best foundation for any life.

The vikings also had a thing or two to say about getting up early. Though with different motives. Here from Hávamál 58:) "He must rise early, the one who wants to have another's wealth or life; seldom does a lying wolf get a ham or a sleeping man victory."

My second favourite koan: A zen master and his student approach a stream and find a geisha who wants to cross but there is no bridge. To the shock of the student, the master offers to carry the woman across the stream on his back. They walk for a long time after leaving the woman behind before the student finally blurts out "I can't believe you did that." The master says "I let her down on this side of the stream. Are you still carrying her?"

For me waking up early is horrible. Whenever I wake up early the rest of the day I am dragging my ass with zero energy. I still force myself to get out of bed at 6 am but at this point I’m questioning if it’s actually helping me at all.
@oomenacka
@oomenacka 2 жыл бұрын
@@FTW_666 Consistent waking schedules are beneficial, but don't let toxic positivity destroy you - sometimes a slow morning is necessary. And furthermore, not everyone is a morning person. I think the culture of attaching personal value to work and productivity has infected certain philosophical currents such as Stoicism.

I like Ryan's books and what he has done for Stoicism, but I recently saw him speak and instead of being inspired by Stoicism he went on a rant trashing Trump, putting down people who opposed vaccine mandates and vaccines, claiming that Carter was one of our greatest president because he installed solar panels on the White House, and so forth. I never realized he was such a partisan Leftist. I will still read his books though, because he inspired me to read the Stoics. I just wish he would use Stoicism as a force to bring people together during this challenging times.

Didn't watch the full video but seems like contradictions. Be "zen" content, while being super ambitious. I say do you; but true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. Everything else won't matter when you stand before the judgment seat of Christ. Selah.
@apollofaraday
@apollofaraday 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t thinks it’s truly a contradiction because what I think he means is, be ambitious or “worry about what you can control, which is how you act/play/work. But don’t worry and stress about the things that you cannot change or control” and also nothing he did contradicts with scripture at all?
