How Strong is Reinhard Van Astrea? | Re:Zero

SPOILERS FOR ALL OF RE:ZERO IN THIS VIDEO OF COURSE.
Reinhard Van Astrea, The Sword Saint, The Hero, The Godzilla of Re:Zero himself according to the author Tappei. Reinhard is widely known across not only the Re:Zero community, but the anime community in general as one of the most overpowered characters in fiction relative to their own cast. So in this video, I plan to explain & breakdown just how overpowered this character is, because again with most things Re:Zero, a lot of information when it comes to characters strength will not make it into the anime. I know most people wanted me to do Subaru first, but I just like Reinhard more. I promise I’ll get to Subaru next though. I also appreciate those who come in the comments and correct some things I say about Re:Zero, the series is complicated, I’m new to making content on it and I really appreciate you guys helping me out when it comes to being accurate with things I may say. With that said, since I value the time of both you & I, I’ll get straight into this breakdown. Massive spoilers ahead.

Makes sense... most people don't know their divine ability unless it's obvious. To have over 100 and most of them be passive is near impossible to figure out on your own. He could probably just ask for a divine protection that lets him know what his others are and the world would give it to him though.

In one of the Q&a Tappei said that if characters were to have their souls destroyed they would stay dead. So that's a weakest that Reinhard has. But in another q&a Tappei said thay Reinhard would gain a divine protection that protects his soul. So unless you have a attack that can destroy the soul and ignore divine protections you wouldn't be able to kill Reinhard. Fate nasuverse victim.

Yea Reinhard with the soul is kind of a weird topic. He has been able to cut down Petelgeuse's soul and prevent it from possessing Subaru in an alternate universe where he helps him all through Arc 1-3. If an authority attacked his soul he'd likely be cooked but as of now, there are none that can.

Tappei has stated that Rein can counter soul destruction. "Regarding Reinhard’s Divine Protection of the Phoenix in the world of Re: Zero, if the soul is alive, the body will come back. In this world, if the body is dead, then the person is dead. Also, generally it is impossible to destroy someone’s soul. For Reinhard, as long as his Divine Protection is there, he can come back to life, even if he physically dies many times. In this world, there are 10 special swords, and one of them is the “Meiken” - the “Life Sword”. If you use this sword to fight, even Reinhard might be in danger. However, if someone points the Life Sword at him, he probably would receive a Divine Protection to counter it. I have no idea how to kill Reinhard. Please think about it and tell me. " Here's a description of the Life Sword, which was used in the LiM game: "According to the game, it has been "fed" with copious amounts of mana, which gave it an ability to kill a person's very soul." So, Rein can probably survive soul destroying attacks.

In the light novels corresponding to episode 3, Zero kara Hajimaru Isekai Seikatsu, it was mentioned Reinhard was so OP he could have leveled the loothouse and the wall next to it. I mean that wasn't the ideal outcome given that he wanted Subaru to live, but that just goes to show you what he can do with a sword not even meant for his power. In Ayamatsu IF, Subaru was able to destroy the capital while Reinhard was, completely physically fine, and totally unable to stop him. Also in Season 1 he did nothing against the White Whale. He totally could have soloed him, but he didn't know where the White Whale was. Tappei even said that in a hypothetical crossover where Ainz and Nazarick tried to destroy Lagunia, Reinhard would lose. This resulted in anger among fans and he clarified he didn't mean they could scratch Reinhard, but that Reinhard lacked information required to stop them. In other words, if Reinhard knows where a threat is, great, just point him in that direction and watch him beat it or it running away from him with its tail behind its legs. Otherwise, things can be falling apart and he's none the wiser of what's going on.

You did pretty good with this one. Only thing I can think of that wasn’t mentioned was his Divine Protection of Mind Changing. Its been forever since I read the side story but I believe at age 5 he basically used it to brainwash the current captain of the royal knights to take the position despite not wanting it. He can basically mind control people but he chooses not to because he was scolded following that incident. I am sure he could get that power again if he chose though.

People misinterpret Tappei’s statement about Reinhard vs Regulus stalemating if Subaru wasn’t there. It would only be a stalemate because under normal circumstances, Reinhard wouldn’t kill Regulus’ wives. Reinhard could still indeed kill Regulus if he was left no other choice It was also stated that Reinhard could beat all of the archbishops together but it wouldn’t be considered a win to him because people from his side would die in the process

The Puck feat in the failed timeline was with the Dragon Sword drawn which he can only draw under specific circumstances. So its probably not indicative of his physical stats. I'd compare that feat closer to something from Fate tbh.

The center of the universe, “the great od” or whatever it’s called, basically god except it has no consciousness, chose Reinhardt to be the protector of the universe, not the beings living in it. His existence is literally just to keep the universe from being destroyed. The problem is that he’s essentially omnipotent, but not omniscient. It’s why his actions even though well intended can have seriously bad consequences that he never anticipated.

It’s why Subaru is so important to the story. Sure… without Subaru, Reinhardt could still kill all the sin archbishops, and all the witches, and every other threat the world faces, without breaking a sweat. But odds are that the loss of life in that world would be catastrophic. Subaru is there to minimize that loss as much as possible.

I think reinhard is the perfect op character. He is stupidly ridiculously overpowered but also not the solution for every single situation, tappei managed to make him at least one of the most broken anime characters while having stakes be a thing even when reinhard is in the vicinity. It's also great because of how it explores the psychology of someone who was treated as nothing but a weapon his entire life and the dynamics it lead to him having with both his kingdom and family

It depends on how you scale Reinhard divine protections. They can be either 4D or 5D. While goku has 5d scaling (at his lowest) 6d or 7d. Most of the things that Reinhard could throw at goku are things goku already dealt with. Existence eraser. Goku survived a Hakai while being offguard. Spatial attacks. Already dealt with that. The difference in stats is somewhat is also something goku has over Reinhard.

Pretty good, but you forgot to mention that Reinhard: - Is stronger than Satella, whose power/love transcends all imaginable dimensions - Can fight against Regulus, whose Authority lets him liberate himself from all concepts in existence. - Can destroy Od Laguna, which is a conceptual, omnipresent existence that doesn't have a physical form - Faster than Satella, who can easily walk in space lacking the concept of time
