I'm on that email list and the emails asking for donations were INCESSANT. Often multiple times a day. My favorite part of them was saying that your donation would be matched - up to 1,000 percent - but it never said by whom. Their new tactic is asking you to do a task - fill out a survey, sign his birthday card, etc. - but you can't submit it without giving them money.

Interesting variation on the old Hari Krishna "give a trinket, ask for donation, get a bigger one" psychological trick. This one exploits the "sunk cost" fallacy or the "gambler's" fallacy, that being the tendency to want to continue to do something, even though it's a bad idea, because you don't want to "waste" the effort you've already put into it. So gamblers chase their losses and lose more, people in abusive relationships keep going back without any significant change because "they have history" (lots of other factors at work in those situations, too), and 45 gets you to pay some bucks to submit that survey you just spent time filling out. The trick is remembering that past bad decisions can't be undone by continuing to make the same bad decision. Whatever you put into a bad-faith situation is already gone, and you're never getting it back. Grieve, move on.

I worked at a bank and when Trump lost then he started this donation crap. So many customers who donated kept getting charged every three days. They were scammed and thought it would be a one time donation. By the end of week they were scammed for about 200 dollars. They tried to cancel the reoccurring charges but they were so trusting of trump they gave their direct debt account information. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Congress has no prosecuting powers but legislation powers. Their investigations are about finding out what happened, inform the public and propose actions to prevent this from happening again. I could imagine things as giving the speaker of the house the power to call the national guard if the capitol is under attack. If criminal misconduct is discovered they can refer to the judicial branch (DOJ) for criminal prosecution. DOJ decides if there is going to be a prosecution. They don't need a referral. Ofcourse the committee will share all the info with DOJ. If the committee makes a referral it can (and will be) used by republicans to tell the voters that it is all a democratic hoax. One way or another DOJ will make its own decision about prosecution and will be happy to use the data from the committee.
