@@yutian5884 I think the US govt (e.g., not regular citizens like me) walks an impossibly fine line geopolitically speaking. Of course I personally recognize Taiwan as an independent nation but it doesn't really matter who I vote for, as neither administration will "recognize" Taiwan. What the US govt will do will let the PRC golden egg continue as long as possible (because of the corrupt American corporations that have financial interests based in the mainland and they have hide influence over the govt) at least until the issue of Taiwan comes to a head, and only THEN will the US come to Taiwans aid in fending off a PRC invasion. Until then, what you guys in Taiwan can do is just continue to grow your population, build new diplomatic relationships, and grow that economy as much as possible. The longer you all hold out, the less powerful the PRC will become on the world stage as the population bust will hit them as will increasing standards of living and higher wages. This is why they are pushing the belt and road initiative so hard, and why just like the US, are beginning to build up their military power for a post industrial scenario. Taiwan has great prospects for it's future, but keeping the PRC at bay for as long as possible and also building the relationship with the US stronger and stronger. Hopefully one day in the future, the US will be able to recognize a sovereign Taiwan and a separate mainland PRC china and maintain a relationship with both (though as I have been saying, this will probably need to be settled with a conflict).

Officially Taiwan can not go back on the "one China principle" because that will provoke Xi Jinping, to an extend that might push away unofficial, and official allies of Taiwan. Since they might see that, as Taiwan forcing the PRC's hand. At this moment it is import to show the world what the PRC does, without pressuring them, without forcing their hand. "With the U.S. in the middle, China and Taiwan have avoided war for more than seven decades. " No, not really more than seven decades. US 7th fleet did interrupted the PRC to end Chinese Civil War, but they did not stopped the ROC to raid mainland China coast in the 1950s. PRC/ROC shelled between islands of Kinmen and the Matsu Islands along the east coast of mainland China till late 1970s. And Taiwan coast guards killed mainland fisherman in 1990s. And, the trouble and risk has always been, the US interrupted China's internal affair.
@HhH556883 жыл бұрын
The most interesting part is the change of KMT's stance. KMT lost the civil war and retreated to Taiwan. Ever since, KMT saw CCP an enemy and competed with CCP for the name of China. In 1990s, after the end of military war, KMT gradually changed its stance and became more friendly to CCP. The reason is, unlike DPP sees TW a independent country, KMT regarded China Mainland as part of Taiwan under ROC (which is ridiculous nowadays but still written in TW Constitution) which is actually similar to CCP's view of TW (Taiwan is part of China under CCP). And in the later part, it was mentioned that the US stepped in to block the CCP from finishing the war and taking control of the island (ie the cause of the political limbo now). There was no independence declared, ever. The US acknowledges this too. Otherwise, this video would have clearly said so. Then throughout the rest of the video, they kept saying "invade Taiwan". How does one invade one's own territory? If Hawaii breaks away due to Civil War and USA wants to unify it, are they going to say "invade" too?

Taiwan was even in the UN as CHiNA until 1971 when votes kicked them out. It is still in their constitution that mainland China belongs to them. They also fly the same flag which was used in all of China. Taiwan’s largest airline is China Airline. Taiwan’s ID says Republic of China, Taiwan Province. Taiwan’s auto license plates say “Taiwan Province”. When the current president took office, she bowed to a huge photo of Dr. Sun Yat San. It was filmed. Go look for it. One of their territories, Kinmen Island is just 3km off mainland China’s Fujian Province. The ID issued in Kinmen says “Republic of China, Fujian Province, Kinmen County”.

One thing lacks completely in this otherwise well-made summary of China-Taiwan-US relationship. This is that in 1990, KMT and CCP reached an agreement named 'ONE CHINA POLICY' in Singapore. KMT uses this agreement in domestic affair to mainly keep silent its biggest political rival, Democratic Progressive party and its followers and to manage the supports from the refugees population who still claim the reconquest of Mainland China - which becomes impossible.

Careful now. It's 「一個中國、各自表述」, which translates to “both sides recognize there is only one China, but *_agree to differ on its definition_* ”. This definiion, to the CCP, is of course that the PRC owns sovereignty over all peviously-owned territories of the ROC (including Taiwan). On the other hand, Taipei understood this as reconfirming the ROC's position of being the only legitimate government of the Greater China region. It's basically an agreement with no agreement. It's just word games. Edit: add bold italics to text

@Tani J Yes, it will be all mankind’s tragedy if WWIII happens. Yes, China has been in a amazing rise, and I’m more than glad for the people. Now, I don’t see how defending my rights and my home will cause American lives directly. You’re saying that if China decides to occupy another country then the country that’s in threat should give up, because it might start WWIII or cause casualties of Americans. I don’t know what world you live in, but in mine that’s nonsense. Secondly, I have friends from China and I am very familiar with the how well some of them are doing, but it does not mean we should be ruled over. If that makes sense, then every country that is financially below average will be rushing to give up their nationality and join China; moreover, we are not below average as far as I’m concerned. I guess if they were a country of democracy, there’s no doubt that we get alone as strong allies or we would have merged long ago, unfortunately that is not the reality. Ps, There is more meaning in life than just financial needs.

This is a very superficial, simple minded discussion about a very serious topic. Important considerations that were not discussed include: 1. Taiwan is a fundamental, core interest for the PRC and has been so for 71 years. No Chinese government can remain in power if Taiwan became an independent sovereign state. The backlash would be brutal and come from all quarters and would unify all of China for that purpose. 2. The only reason Mao didn’t conquer Taiwan in the 1950s is that the US Seventh Fleet impeded him from doing so. The US, in effect, prevented a formal resolution of the Chinese civil war and put it in abeyance. A final resolution of the Chinese civil war requires that one side (The PRC or Taiwan) defeat the other. 3. Taiwan is not going to defeat the PRC. The PRC will eventually and inevitably assimilate Taiwan. The only questions are when and under what conditions (i.e. peaceful via mutual consent v. bloodshed). 4. The American people will not tolerate a prolonged, bloody, expensive conflict with China over Taiwan. They have had enough with Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. 5. When China conquers Taiwan, the US officially becomes #2. That is because it would prove to the rest of the world that the US cannot defend its allies. This would precipitate a geopolitical realignment of Asian countries whereby alliances would flip in China’s favor. The result is that the US would be ejected from the Asia sphere of influence. 6. If China displaces the US, the dollar would no longer be the global reserve currency. The value of the dollar would fall and the US would no longer be able to pay its debts by printing money and will no longer be able to impose sanctions against countries it doesn’t like. Hyperinflation could very well ensue in the US. Serious consequences. With loose talk about Taiwan independence, you are playing with fire folks.

As US wish, but can US be the lead to set up the diplomatic relationship with Taiwan first? And why wouldn’t they?
@Shadowsuit3 жыл бұрын
@@somethinglikethisone6635 because Taiwan is not a country, it goes like this. Mao Zedong a dictator fight the Japanese and ally with an autocratic dictator to fight the Japanese off. When the battle is over, due to the high level of corruption of the ROC, the people rally around Mao who was seen as more popular. The US back the ROC and it's the PRC who wins. The ROC in accordance with the PRC exile themselves to Taiwan to avoid the repression that will fall on China. Taiwan or Formosa was formally in China, we are not talking of Mongolia type of territory or Tibet. Taiwan never had a formal presence as a country and will never have as it's not a country. Just like HK, the European and US diplomats try to push the idea that China could be toppled by an outside example of what a democratic China would look like. I mean if you can call Taiwan and HK a democracy which they never were just like Singapour. They are autocratic system based on a classist system where the elite rules. This countries where highly invested by Foreign assets as it's the place that allow IDE to china which was not possible for a long time. They were de facto the ally and at the same time a diplomatic issue for US and the EU (UK mostly who had huge investment in HK and US who had huge investment in Taiwan). Taiwan is as a country as HK is a country, they are just mini States that use a highly corrupted form of capitalism using the same tactics as the communist but the other way around. Its quit weird to hear Bloomberg not explain how Taiwan was created and by who... The Chinese elite that was toppled by communism, they were not children at heart or fierce defensor of western style of democracy. They are seen as a stain and a legacy of the century of humiliation brought by Europe to China. This will end by Taiwan and HK becoming Chinese again and the US will not have choice but accept because no country will come rescue Taiwan if they go into war with China. You can see it as a territory like the German territory that were lost to Poland after WW1. When Germany reclaimed those territory nobody nudged or moved a finger because it was accepted that it was not Polish territory. The war started when Germany wanted to invade France not Poland. Why ? Because nobody cared for this place in Poland that everybody understood to be German...
