I'm glad you pointed out that fact that people overlook about INTPs: that Ne (a highly playful and speculative function) is wedged between Ti and Si, two very strict and demanding functions. I often find it hard to answer when people ask me "do you prefer to do things a usual way or try something out for the sake of experimenting?" I do both of those all the time and don't see them as contradictory. I like to look at things in a very factual and basic way, and then stop and consider if there's a link that may have been missed and come up with ideas that often astonish people. It's like looking at a jigsaw puzzle: you see every piece as it is first, and then begin to piece together how all those pieces come together to make a whole picture.
@jimclayson Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Risk versus reward. A little Ne-based innovation helps fuel Ti-based understanding sometimes, even when Si-based "because that's the way it always been done" screams otherwise... and even if the innovation blows up in our faces, it's still an opportunity for us to get that Si-based wisdom reinforced in our minds. Over time and with personal experience, I've found Si getting stronger, but the novelty of Ne never goes away.

Honestly, as ENTP I feel like a wannabe INTP with worse concentration and sadly intellectually inferior when you get down to it. I rather just scan an issue for the points of improvement or expansion and then yeah, I guess the most tempting fruit it is. To an untrained outside eye, this may seem similar but I unfortunately know the difference.

How does the INTP make decisions? Usually out of desperation-fueled panic from putting off the decision until we find ourselves on the precipice of disaster and the situation is of the "do or die" variety. Procrastination is its own reward. 😑

I couldn't agree more. I had to pause and repeat some parts to listen to it again while thinking of every decision I have made through the years. Actions entail consequences. It is imperative for me to think that no matter how small the chance of failure is, it will still happen and contingency plans are needed to be considered. If there's anything that annoy me, that is when people call me out for being "negative" or "to cross the bridge when I get there". Positive outcomes are expected but you should always be prepared when it fails... or in the process of failing to try to salvage and put it back on track. What I have learned through the years is to not always aim for perfection but to learn to work with what is acceptable. It may sound contradicting at first glance but being too rigid has brought way too much stress for this aging vessel. The perfectionist in me is nothing more but a vestige of my former glory. Good times. It may sound as if life has made me jaded; I cannot deny. Though some things will never change... people are tiring. I'd rather spend more time, alone, in the comfort of my home and to only socialize, when needed. - INTP in his mid-30s

As an INFP, I can say sometimes I feel like a chameleon morphing into different personality types based on where I’m at in refining my compass& how my mood is doing at the moment. Sometimes I go full INFP dreaming mode, draft all that mess out onto paper (sometimes I literally just go insane and my psyche explodes), and then after a bit I’m able to use particular functions to make sense of it all. This especially goes with stuff related to value systems (I’m currently working on my own modern manifesto). But stuff like writing poetry (no surprise) some very naturally to me& doesn’t require as much mental sorting or time. However I’ll say that my favorite moments are when I’m able to combine creative& logical stuff, or people with other personality types are able to explain to me how I can better do this& appeal to my type. It makes me feel very seen, esp as an INFP in STEM. I think as INFPs mature& heal their traumas more, they’ll find& trust friends/colleagues with other personality types who are able to help them bring their creativity out into the world in a manner that can be really impactful to a lot of people. Please don’t allow your traumas& your history of being misunderstood to keep you isolated!! Also, another thing: your habits probably don’t work consistently like other personality types. I’m not saying you shouldn’t try to have daily habits (you should) but like your daily habits should include a lot of things to make you feel good (meditating, some time for hobbies& fav ppl, some time to focus on things that interest you) bc you probz cannot just “chug thru it” like other types. Or if you do you’ll burn out sooooo easily (I know from personal experience). So yes, take it as steady as possible but also understand that having a framework that functions more on feeling/creativity, understand that there will be days more than other personality types where you’re just not as naturally functional (related mainly to work& practical matters)& be prepared to work on a different schedule than everyone else/adapt habits that make it easier on “those” days. Take it easy INFPs, once you get to a steadier place practically, you can have more time to use your crazy minds to do amazing things!!! But DEF get started on those ideas even before you get to a stable place bc those “seemingly non-practical” things are what keep you happy& help you discover yourself. No offense to the other personality types (love yall) but INFPs are kinda the most human IMO and that makes it hard for us in a very machine-like, corporate-run competitive society. We can’t tap into our inner robot as easily as the other types LOL. (It’s funny bc I’m an INFP and ppl used to call me “robot” in high school I guess bc I was considered rlly smart but I was also a late bloomer& didn’t have romantic feelings like everyone else around me so ppl thought I was weird). Oh that’s another thing, INFPs accept being a late bloomer, nothing wrong with that!! You’re like fine wine, you get better with age😘😘and just a reminder, we do believe in logic& know how to use it; we just get easily very bored with the “black& white” of the world, are very sensitive about issues related to justice, and we just wanna see different. That’s all. Sometimes our boredom& hatred of reality is our biggest enemy and demotivater, that’s something we need to spend a lot of time figuring out how to get past as INFPs. We’re not a bunch of daydreamers in lala-land, we’re just a bunch of bored rebels and creatives who need to find better ways to channel our strengths!!

I'm ISFP and this is so spot on. I hate when people ask me, what if this, what if that? and it gets me frustrated and i go, what if not? Stop overthinking. I'll solve things as they come, i don't see a point about thinking about things that might not even happen. SMH
@DreamQuillRose Жыл бұрын
The point is, if you're talking to someone who has a good track record of predicting likely outcomes, they are going to reject your choice and want a different solution before any action is even taken, to save time, effort, resources, frustration, and/or heartbreak. This can cause arguments that cause even more hurt feelings and wasted time. The ability to make decisions on the fly is not a bad thing. Unless you often end up making choices that end in bad outcomes, which would undermine the trust people have in your ability to make good decisions. TRUST is the point here. The funny thing is, those who predict may be wrong in their predictions - no one has life experience in everything, after all. But they have been right often enough in the past to trust their own predictions. As an INTP who is constantly gathering information, I'm on the fence. I do tend to let others make their own decisions and just observe what happens. If things go in a direction different than I predicted, I make a note of that and add it to my mental filing cabinet. But more often than not, things go exactly as I thought they would (whether that is well or poorly). People around me are used to hearing me say, "Yeah, I figured that." They also tend to trust my decision-making skills, to the point where I have to gently encourage some of them to make choices for themselves at times.
@rauliuxaa Жыл бұрын
@@DreamQuillRose Well i'm no INTP, but i can easily predict if relationship will work out for people in a long term or not. Havn't been wrong in that area since i was like jokingly guessing since i was like 17yrs old . As for doing something, it's not always the same. 2 people could make the same decision and have completely different outcomes, it's not due a decision itself, it's due a process you do once you make a decision and ability to adapt and overcome and follow thru, even if you fail, it takes legit few seconds to refrect on that mistake, and go forwards without doing the same shit again .

Infp here, before making a decision I think about every possible outcome that might occur or the consequences that might come along with one decision and than go for the one that has the least negative consequences or outcomes. Of course I also put it through my value test but sometimes I have to go against my values if the estimated outcome of the "right" thing to do is worse than going with the other option that might seem morally wrong. For example I am absolutely against violance and don't wanna use violance. But in a situation I have to defend myself in order to protect myself it would be nuts not to use every tool possible to do so. That means In life threatening situations (and there are more than being attacked physically) I will protect my own self in any means.

As an INFP, I admire the way INFJs mix logic and feelings. I believe it would be extremely good in moral issues because of the clarity from the logic mixed with the great amount of empathy. Perhaps it’s because of the way us INxPs build frameworks and how we like to crystallize our knowledge, I find the INFJ’s process similar to the way I create solid ideas (using a bit of reasoning to what is most practical to the situation) from my values or important information and try to live up to it. This is what I’ve been doing as I matured, and I’ve really been trying to consider other things besides my own feelings to make decisions. Hearing these descriptions of INFJs, it seems like they embody the way I ideally want to think, empathetic yet can see the logical side of things and are much more firm in their resolves. Their way of energy conserving also adds bonus points. So overall, I think INFJs could be very admirable people and I strive for some of their qualities I hear from these type descriptions. (Just so you know, I haven’t met any irl) I don’t know why I specifically talked about INFJs in this comment, ig they just stood out to me 😭😭😭

(INTJ) As I get older, my decision making process has changed. In early childhood, intuition was the leader. Then through school, logic played a much larger role, while intuition observed and codified learnings into abstract structures. In early adulthood, that logic got too big for its boots, and I allowed that 6th slot Ti to lead me astray far too many times. Now, intuition is the leader again, with Fi internal values playing a much greater role in decisions. Te and Fi duke things out -- and Ti internal logic pops up too -- but ultimately Ni is used as final decider.
@hackpo1015 Жыл бұрын
How do know when your being guided by intuition or logic?
@johnknight9150 Жыл бұрын
@@hackpo1015Excellent question. Logic is a conscious process, whereas intuition is a process of the unconscious. This gives them very different qualities. Whereas logic is concerned with crystallised ideas that can be verified and audited -- the foundation of rationality -- intuition is based more around pattern recognition, and compressing external sensory input into abstract forms that can be internalised. At first glance, this makes logic sound clearly superior. It is absolutely the more rational of the two, and even trying to describe intuition will likely give a response of "WTF are you talking about?". However, you need to understand the order of how they come about. Consciousness is an extension of the unconscious, not the other way around (see Freud and Jung's extensive rants about their loathing of the misleading term "subconscious" for more on that topic). From out of the body springs the unconscious, and from the unconscious springs the conscious mind. In psychodynamics, the conscious mind is often represented as a mere tip of an iceberg, whereas the unconscious is represented by the far greater portion below the surface. What does this create in practical terms? Although conscious content is clear, focused, and crystallised, it is also extremely limited in its view -- especially a person's internal logic. Unconscious content may be much murkier and more abstract, but it is hyper-connected and can utilise the psyche (and body) as a whole, not just a limited area in the frontal lobes. I don't think I need to explain how to know if something is using logic (it's simple "if a + b = c, then...." type stuff), but intuition will draw upon your body, your dreams, your drives, your feelings, spontaneous imagery, inadvertent behaviours, and so on. If you look at a dangerous bridge, your intuition can look at it and in less than a second say, "nope, not doing that", whereas a logic-driven computer would need to spend lengthy periods running through endless sequences of logic to reach the same conclusion. Your body is a big factor. In my twenties in particular, the biggest mistakes I made in my life were times when my logic told me that something was the right thing to do. It was that "if a + b = c, then..." kind of thinking. My body would be screaming in opposition, with my fingers going heavy, my guts sinking, nausea, headaches, dizziness -- all sorts of obvious "stop doing this" signs -- but I went ahead and did it anyway, because it *made logical sense at the time*. 🤦♂ I remember a turning point when I was about to do something very stupid, and I had something that sounded like a clear, rational reason for doing so. I drove to a certain place and got out of my car, but when I started to walk, my legs started turning to lead. I kept trying to move forward, but my body was pulling me back and didn't want to go on. I stopped for a second and checked back in with how I was feeling and realised, "I don't want to be here". I drove home feeling kind of angry at myself, but later on I realised I had made the right decision, especially in the long term. The more I do this, and allow my body and unconscious to speak, the more I make better long term decisions. My conscious ego with its personal logic will make little tantrums sometimes, but the intuitions always lead to a more mature decision that avoid heartache or simple unnecessary headaches. Sometimes it might be something simple like "do I text this girl this thing or not?", and when I'm in the moment, doing something that might seem like an inspired idea, my body may give off other clues and make me sluggish, forcing me to check back in with myself. Then the next day I realise that it would have been a stupid idea to have texted that thought and I was right to cool my jets! ;-)
