I (intp) was a book worm, happiest while reading. In college I got involved with a group organizing youth events. I joined a co-ed choir. I signed up a gym membership. Later I learned to ballroom dance, ski, road run and trail run, hike and backpack with groups. I took up knitting, crocheting, jewelry making, embroidering, painting, card-making. Now I concentrate on learning swimming and singing with barbershop chorus. Truth be told, I still prefer to stay home to explore knowledge and interesting tidbits by myself. But by instinct I know my mind can’t wander while doing and making. This is how I manage not to remain a hermit thus far. It is more important now that I am retired. The desire to not leave the house can be strong.

@@lovewho I enjoy your channel very much Nathan but if I may offer a thought... polymath is a "push away" word, I prefer expert generalist; it has the same explanatory function and salvages the pursuit from a perceived intellectual elitism that often discourages those from taking up the mantle. An expert generalist: One whose defining skill is inclusive synthesis and their defining qualities are epistemic acumen and agility - knowhow with knowledge, having enough expertise in one domain to value different forms of understanding and knowing how to integrate them while retaining curiosity towards whatever remains unfamiliar. I oft reply when asked of me what word you use to label thee, an intellectual is my reply divine and herein is how I define: Reason wed to curious comportment a facile grasp of what's important faced with a subject ignorance doth show we resort to the wisdom of "I don't know." INTP here. 1. Unless you are doing something like trying to teach spirituality to a starving homeless person instead of feeding it we are going to let you believe that. 2. Are you investing real time and effort in the real world or are you just patting yourself on the back reverberating in the feeling of you beeing present? Growing up in a spiritual environment I have seen many people claiming to be in the present and it is always hilarious to observe. But I am also struggeliung with this and have no real solution yet (except from "my mode of opperating in my world of chains and modells is so much more efficient"), so I feel you...

Hi, I can add something here from my personal experience :D I'm an ISTJ who knows some ISTPs friends and cousin. When I type someone I look their whole personality, not just pick from inferior or trickster function because it can be confusing @@ - well some people i could literally just ask them to take the test in the past, some i guess. I'm not any "pro" at MBTI theory to explain in that term, i just can tell from experience, and i learn from Love Who a lot :D As an ISTJ for me, Fe is something I'm "blind" to, it may look like to others that I accidentally don't aware much of social grace or courtesy, or being just "in the face", confrontational when needed to. It's NOT something that TOOK MY ENERGY AWAY when i interact to other people - well, except if my Si-Ne axis don't have info for the conversation, it can be quite drain for me and I can look like the Fe-inferior folks in those situation - which i'm not, but since Si is my source of information hasn't facilitated the conversation. If my Si-Ne has enough info, I just may look extroverted-like, and very enjoy the conversation. And Ne is my inferior function, so i struggle with it the most. I can use Si-Ne, but of course the information comes to me in the Si-form first and foremost. I know the details first, the big picture later. It's not very natural for me to use Ne to handle anything/situation, or learning anything new at all. But I wants to expand my knowledge in various aspect - Ne is my aspiration function. But if i have to encounter, absorb information in Ne ideas and in conversation without any concrete reality detail, it took energy from me very fast, i will fell daunting immediately. And like that, as i observed ISTPs - Fe is their inferior function. Though they can socialize in gatherings, but in just a short period of time before their energy ran out, they will withdrawn from those gathering - because maybe interacting with people TOOK THEIR ENERGY AWAY - "maybe" because if with their RIGHT people to be with, they can be more welcoming like any type. And Fe is their aspiration function, means they Ti doms very rock with their brilliant Ti-Se-Ni / Ti-Ne-Si of their understanding and working their way through the world in solitude, but they also just "crave", welcoming and helpful for their beloved people in their lives. That's just from my observation and experience corresponding to my stack and their ISTP stack. Hope that helps you :D

@Hari-kx2er Жыл бұрын
I think in short the answer is that Inferior function: You are aware of the value of the function and wants to develop it but it just doesn't come naturally to you at all and takes a lot of effort Trickster function: You know you are not good at this function, but you simply don't care because you believe you can manage without consciously developing this function. You may even believe that you are better off without this function meddling in your life.

As an istp, personally I’m working on my fe a lot lately because, to be frank, Covid kind of erased my ability to use mine. Sometimes I do it through research, mostly through trying to pick up more experience with it. As for Ne, one of the ways I try to work on it is by playing strategy games, although admittedly it gets exhausting pretty quickly. Edit: I said strategy games because when I’m bored I’ll try some off the wall strategy and see if it works. I’m pretty sure that counts as Ne although I could be wrong.

Ne games are reading an interpreting, your own perceptions and opinions. To create new more improved ideas. Ne is pathfinder, like playing minecraft you see a potential in each items, like in real world, you see almost every object and situations in real world as potentials to upgrade, combining every dots, even the simplest things when people says it stupid and invaluable will be amazing. Btw, in my opinion Ne is about building things with curiosity and underlying secrets behind nature, like all the games and computers we had, the surrealism arts and novels, poets that often hard to understands. It's all Ne, Ne is awesome but people failed to explain it's core, it's broad and untangible how would you describe it? Temporal nothingness waiting to be explored, Adventure games are Ne, you follow the story and ask why this happen is there any better ending for the characters?

I find I've become overly interested in how people tick, when I have to be in social situations that is. Once upon a time I would have considered Fe as something pointless but now, I see the value in being balanced. Becoming a mother probably has something to do with it. I admire dominant Fe users, the way they read people so effortlessly is something I aspire to. Even if I don't intend to really utilize that intelligence, it'd be handy to have lol. - ISTP

Balance is a tricky concept. Sometimes I wonder whether it's the people at the extremes who manage to achieve the most worthwhile things. Ultimately, I would bet on balance more so. There are abilities that emerge when you're making use of all of your powers - even the ones that aren't as strong - that are impossible to unleash when you're all-in on just your main strengths. Trying to improve a weaker trait is hard since it means ignoring our preferred functions. It is worth it though! ~ Nathan

So I'm an ENTJ and my grandmother is an ENFJ.... yeah so she came and visited me earlier this year, with a back injury. She requested that I help her heal by not letting her work out, so I planned the entire week out to have her entertained enough to forget about working out. She just ignored her back until it got so bad she was really grumpy and mean and I had to call her an asshole to bring her back to reality. She just kept pushing herself and also trying to sneak in workouts. But it just reminded me of this time I pinched a nerve in the middle of a move and I just ignored it and pushed right though it and by the end of the move I had a serous problem on my hands... or I should say foot. We both ended up having a long talk about how we can push past a lot of pain, have a higher pain tolerance and how easy it is to just ignore how we are feeling until it gets so bad we effectively crash. How we hate being sick and will try and challenge ourselves to get as much done while sick as we possibly can all while not asking for help and annoying our loved ones that we are not taking it easy. lol
@lovewho
@lovewho Жыл бұрын
That ability to push through pain is certainly a strength both types have. The trick is to use it only in times where powering through really pays off in a big way. I've seen both types neglect ongoing issues simply for the sake of getting day-to-day things done, which is usually not worth taking that risk for ~ Nathan

As an INTP I’ve been really thinking about the whole ‘being in your head’ thing recently. I’ve long had this feeling like I wasn’t as real as other people. On the one hand I suspect this may be a somewhat universal part of the human condition like other people will always appear more realised than us, their motivations more legitimate. But I think there’s a part where I’m so in my head that nothing rlly manifests in the real world I have ideas, motivations etc. but they sort of just stay in my head which isn’t a huge problem for me personally but it seems there’s this part of me that isn’t engaged with enough cos this impulse to enact things irl just isn’t rlly there. It feels pretty fundamental but maybe that’s just something I tell myself to justify me not trying. It’s not extreme but still should probably work on it 😅

I feel exactly the same way. However, if it ever becomes a crippling problem (it can), there is a medication (my father takes it) that helps with the self-motivation chemical. Dominant or inferior, if you utilise the cognitive functions that you possess, you grow as a person to the fullest of your potential. Personally, even if I am an ISFJ, my life-style, interests, culture and the fact I have an ENTP brother with whom I have endless conversations, have been given me the chance to use my Ne and Ti more than my type is expected to. I still have my own weaknesses, of course, but the lack of using the “inferior” function is not one of them. When it comes to Te, well this is something I admire in others truly.
@lovewho

Having people around you who are strong with functions that aren't natural to you is the best way to improve them in my view. You just kind of absorb them passively. If you want to be more intentional you can study them deeply and try to integrate parts of them into yourself in a way that works for you. My best friend is an ENTP who happens to have an ISFJ brother as well. So I've seen that mutually beneficial dynamic play out in practice! ~ Nathan
@CineShinya
@CineShinya Жыл бұрын
@@lovewho That's true. But it also has to do with the person's nature as well. In my case the "Ne absorbing" isn't passive but very active, not only when I talk with my brother, but in general. Oddly enough, my Ne comes to the surface the most when I associate with Ni doms, contradicting to their one direction point of view and trying to help them see all the possible paths they are missing. With Ne doms we complete each other's thoughts and both add more ideas to the conversation. But with either I am the one that seeks for valid evidence and point out the details and what experience has proved as right or false. This is how I always win the arguments with my ENTP brother. We are both good at theories and seeing different spectrums of a matter, but my thoughts are more organized and I bring examples and proof to my words. He is brilliant and bold. But when it comes to tangible proof of his words he is lacking. Because tangibility and organising the details is indifferent to him (but important to me). I also find interesting that your best friend is ENTP (I think you had mentioned that in a video too, some time ago) with an ISFJ brother. My brother has an INTP best friend and it's fascinating to see the same pattern. I don't know if it's a common pattern, but I have noticed that ENTPs tend to get along the best with types similar to their own and all the rest are a challenge to dominate in wits.

@lovewho
@lovewho Жыл бұрын
Regarding point three, I think that's definietly the case yes. An INTP might think they're an INTJ for that reason for example. Both of them struggle with Fe but in quite different ways. The key to understanding the inferior function is to keep in mind that it is both directly opposed to and fundamentally linked to your main dominant function. I'll try to explain it this way: improving the inferior function is like a workaholic trying to spend more time with their family. They genuinely value and truly want to spend more time with their family but they have to sacrifice something they really love (working) to achieve that. The blindspot is like... having a bad diet or not doing enough exercise. They're just problems in themselves - ones that, in the case of the types, they often don't really care about that much ~ Nathan

@@youngpoet44hunnies No, that's a stupid conclusion. Look up "hubris". BTW, tagging your comment with "Lol" makes you look like a simpleton and a dolt, esp. when you get it wrong.

I always thought joining Compatitive Sports like Basketball or Soccer (or Football, dont know the correct term) is an INFP & INTP worse nightmare thanks to their shared blind spot. They would rather invent a new sport rather than joining already established onces

Solo sports and martial arts are better for INxP in my opinion. Team sports are not it for me lol

Fe in the 8/8 "demonic spot" is not a weakness, Nathan, it's a point of pride. It's a feature, not a bug.

The least used function, almost scary when put to use, from the repressive depths of your psyche, hence the "demon". Not that you aren't any good at it, you are. For us INTJs, it's the "Si". Our blindspots are your demons and vice versa.

Why is it opposite of third function but not 4th function?
@solarisan_
@solarisan_ Жыл бұрын
The third function is the part of ourselves we are cocooning and something we can become defensive about if messed with it. So, if a person is cocooning path A, they certainly can’t simultaneously do so with the opposite path. However, since the third function pays its due to the first one, we could somewhat become better at understanding the blindspot through using the reasoning guided by the hero. Understanding does not mean validating or accepting it as such. Having Te as a blindspot I struggle accepting and believing any external data as presented to me. I have to go through things individually, abstract and find possible connections on my own and then check which ones make sense. That requires time and energy and is not a quick or structured process that Te values.
