Thanks for the great content, Don. I've been watching lots of your videos and just bought the Basic Exam material, first because it's really good, and secondly as a thank you for the incredible work you've been doing for the community. Now, unrelated to the Canadian regulations, but I just came back from a trip to Brazil, and I was surprised to learn that the Mini 2 isn't considered an "under 250g" drone there. The Brazilian regulation uses the maximum takeoff weight of the aircraft instead of the actual weight at the moment of the flight. As the Mini 2 is **capable** of carrying some additional payload (0.18lb?), then it must be registered and it costs about 200 BRL (~45 CAD). The funny part is that you don't need any pilot licence to fly any drone below 25kg!

Well done Don! I've been flying since 2013 and the regulations have been pretty much the same but of course, everything has changed in how Transport Canada does stuff for a few years. I had to get my Radio Air Transport licence when I got certified. But now it's an online test etc. I no longer have a license as I live close to national and provincial parks and can't fly anywhere ( which is where my clients are) The mini has given me the basics to capture something outside those areas without having to go through the hoops. The mini 3 will good as it has the avoidance that the mini 2 didn't have plus a better camera. The one thing people should always remember is flying line of sight which is the safest way to fly. Too many people love to fly 3-4 km away which to me is high risk with any UAV

This is excellent information, Don. I had seen a BC-based sailing KZbinr claim that flying unlicensed in Canada was no longer permitted. I'm pleased to see that is not the case. I am thinking of relocating to BC and flying a Mini 2 would be on my agenda.

Thanks Don, I was wondering what regulations apply to the Mini 2. You cleared that up, Thanks. I feel a lot of Mini 2 pilots think they can fly anywhere with out any ramifications! You also answered another one of my burning questions in this video, it was regarding the difference in no fly zones between the DJI software and the Canadian Drone Pilot app. I also had a chuckle when you said it was easy to get your Basic Drone Pilots Licence. I found it a lot of work and a lot more knowlege required than I expected. Having said that I do feel that I have a greater understanding about air space and avaition safty, which helps keep everyone safe. I did use a lot of your videos to study for the exam and for that I must say a big Thank You. Keep up the great work, very much appreciated.

Great job Don! I've been retired for a few years from my regional tourism marketing job promoting the parks and wild places of Vancouver Island. But the constantly evolving regulations of those early years for Canadian drone compliance for my commercial and recreational flying with the multiple drones I've had over those years, and serious money spent on taking courses to pass the requirements to be legally compliant, was exhausting, to create the video library that resulted. When I retired, I finally gave up any thoughts of recreational flying of my last bird (a Mavic Pro with floats), and put away my UAV. Fast forward three years to today, when I just received the gift of a Mini 2 as an extravagant gift from our son- which led me to watch your video, to get caught up on a bit more details about the new found freedom I can enjoy with this amazing tiny flying camera! You did a stellar job Don- thank you. The 'don't do anything stupid' rules have always been what I followed when navigating the many gaps in earlier regulations anyway, as most pilots do. Your clear and insightful presentation along with the much appreciated giving of sources for further info was perfect. Now if the wind would drop here just a little bit on this rare sunny Island February day...

Thanks for all this info, it's the clearest I've found in my days of research. I'm in Montreal and it and from what I understand I won't be able to really fly it anywhere as Montreal (according to The Drone Site Selection Tool) is basically all off limits (in the red). I think I should cancel my order of my Mini 2 Drone as I'll have to leave the City to fly it. Thoughts?
@DonJoyce2 жыл бұрын
Well you landed at the right spot for simple to understand, and correct information. As I explain in this video, sub250g drones like the Mini 2 can be flown in controlled airspace, such as the Montreal area, as long as you stay low and well away from actual airports. If you use the Drone Pilot Canada app, and have a sub250g drone in your aircraft list, the 'sub250g' map view will show you very clearly these areas. If you use the Drone Site Selection Tool, be sure to specify the sub25g map view. @@DonJoyce I've said a few times, maybe not in your channel, or on the FB page, but.. The only things that governments make are rules. These are typically laws and regulations; there are more kinds of rules, but those are the big ones. So, when anything comes to the attention of a government, it will react with the only tool it has and it will create a rule. We got Part IX of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) because droning caught the attention of many governments. More specifically, people doing boneheaded things like flying into airport approach and departure zones caught the attention of governments. I am heartened by the number of people who are trying to learn how they can fly safely and within the rules. I am simultaneously disheartened by the number of people who take the attitude of "I can do any (boneheaded) thing that isn't precisely spelled out in the rules". It is those people who attract the attention of governments and lead to more rules. This is what, I think, is a strong contributor to some governments considering forcing auto-identification into the specifications for small RPAS. I suspect, though, that posting here is, as the saying goes, 'preaching to the choir'. Let's see what happens when if I cross-post this to a couple of the Canadian Drone Pilot groups.

Great info Don,, as usual, 2 thumbs up for your video! Fact: One the optional controller for the DJI Mini3 is the DJI RC which includes the DJI pre-installed Fly App and a build-in 5.5 inch HD display. (a bit more expensive than the standard controller the DJI RC-N1) Question: Since the DJI Fly App does not cover properly the Canadian air space and that no third party app (such as Drone Pilot Canada) cannot be installed or ran onto the DJI RC controller, which option would be best? Option 1: Use the DJI RC controller for flying the drone and use aside the Drone Pilot Canada on smart phone to check and record flight data, or Option 2: Use the DJI RC-N1 (smart phone attach to it) and the Drone Pilot Canada app to fly the drone As may have have guessed it, I am a newby on the learning curve! Thanks
@DonJoyce2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joel. I would recommend you pick the option that is best for your actual flying experience and/or budget. I waffled on this myself, but ended up ordering the RC with the display...for the simplicity and portability. If you can figure out how to install Google Playstore on the controller, then Drone Pilot Canada can be installed. Others have done this with similar DJI Android display controllers. Send me an email to DonDronesOn@gmail.com and I can send instructions.

I know we might be able to do so anyway, but I'd feel a bit more comfortable if I had explicit permission.

Thanks, Zayed! Glad you found my video helpful. I don't live in Toronto, so I can't help you with sights. This video may give you some inspiration though: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmLSYZ58asuVf9E

Great video @Don Joyce. I imagine these rules also apply to the original DJI Mavic Mini?

You are absolutely correct, CPG! And thanks for watching!

What an useful video!!! Your commentary was amazingly pleasant. I have just ordered a dji mini 2 drones. You have already told that I don’t need any registration or license and only need to apply common sense for the safety of our air space and other people. Will it be a bit advantageous if I take the basic pilot test and register my drone?
@DonJoyce3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Mazeed! Looks like you picked up on all the key messages! Lol. Yes, getting your Pilot certification would be good (a mini 2 is a gateway drone!), but registering it would be a waste of money. But DO put your phone number on the drone!!

This video is really awesome, Don! It’s really simple to understand the rules and how they apply, breaking down everything step by step! Would you do the same but for 250g-25kg RPAs as a Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic Air 2? Thanks
@DonJoyce3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, NEK! There are a LOT more rules for the small RPA range...hence my billions of videos. My Introduction video is a good place to start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHvJpmmcfq2sjNk

Oooooo... Don is WAY ahead of you on that score. Much thanks to his videos, I was able to pass my Basic and Advanced exams each on the first try. :) Also, the Drone Pilot Canada app, created by Don Joyce is, in my opinion, the single best tool for Canadian drone pilots. There are a couple of others that I use, but if I had to use only one, it would be the Drone Pilot Canada app (on my Android and Apple tablets). (So, Don... do I eventually get paid for all these plugs??) :) hahahaha - Seriously, though, Don's contributions to helping people understand and apply the rules, and pass the exams is incredible. The fact he does it mostly for free blows my mind. By mostly for free, I mean that you can buy some things from him, like the app and softcopy versions of his video contents but he never hard-sells either. He's more like, "Oh, and if you'd like, you could buy these things, but, uhm, if you don't, hey that's ok, I'm still going to try to help." Also, he gets a small commission if you buy stuff through his amazon link way up above.

Great post Don! Just got the mini 2 from Costco. Question about the nav Canada site.what is the difference between the light shaded red and the dark shaded read areas?
@DonJoyce2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Danny! You'll will love the Mini 2! I don't support the Nav Canada app-trocity or their web site...you'll need to ask them about what things mean (good luck). You may want to consider purchasing my Drone Pilot Canada app, which makes life incredibly simple, including showing you a map view applicable to sub250g drones. Here's an introduction (I have many more videos describing Drone Pilot Canada's features): kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHLaY5RnarCNqsU

Hello Don, a little off the mini 2 topic. I find it ironic how me as a foreign person in Canada was able to become a licensed commercial pilot by Transport Canada but I can't get an advanced drone pilot certificate from them LOL. I was planning on getting a better drone & an advanced license to go with it. But with TC's rule my plan fell apart & I guess I'll stick with flying planes 🥲
@DonJoyce3 жыл бұрын
Wow. I don't know whether to laugh or cry! TC told me a year ago that they were going to change the residency/citizenship requirement...but they did nothing. Thanks for sharing.

Hey there Don! From my understanding, even if I am using my drone for commercial use i don’t not have to register my drone or get any type of insurance? Thanks and keep up the great work!
@DonJoyce2 жыл бұрын
That is correct, Cameron.

@@DonJoyce Hey Don! Is this still valid? I'll be doing my first for freelance pay gig ('commercial work') which will consist of filming the outside of some buildings (in Edmonton, Alberta). I do have my standard license ($10 test), and zero insurance. To reiterate - I do not need any further licensing, and I do not require any type of insurance to fly commercially? I am concerned if separate bylaws apply, or not. Side note, if you have a revolving/updating FAQs section per drone, I think that could prove immensely helpful but also save you the hassle of answering such repetitive questions. Thanks for your infinite wisdom!

@@ineedlulz Yes, this video is still valid. You may want to check out my Mini 4 Pro video. While it is MOSTLY the same info, there are additional insights you may not be aware of. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqfRmI1vm7uEf7M

@DonJoyce thanks so much for the reply Don! I'm sorry I meant the person's comment and it's current validity as opposed to the video. My concern is insurances. I'll watch your Mini4 video too!

Finally passed my basic. Are the rules and regulations in the USA similar if I decide to take the FAA license.
@DonJoyce3 жыл бұрын
The rules in the US are similar, but there are also significant differences. One example is that they differentiate between flying recreationally and commercially.

What about the DJI Air 2S?
@DonJoyce2 жыл бұрын
The Air 2S is well over 250g and thus falls under the full Canadian RPAS regulations.
